I got my parents who are houseless; my son who graduated a year ago and cannot find a job; I adopted a puppy last month from a kill shelter and I am recovering from cancer. Business and homeowners should just start refusing to pay taxes, and sue, since those elected aren't doing their job to protect their freedom to do business and live and work in safety. Also for the loss of tourist dollars as the once beautiful SF is turned into a cesspool.

How is being homeless being entitled?
As environmentally sensitive as San Francisco used to be it's a shame to see the judge allowing raw sewage to be dumped into the street drains designed for rain water along with wrappings and spoiled food, not to mention needles and other drug paraphernalia. It's not a "Constitutional right" to pollute the environment.

Blocking sidewalks that a wheelchair can't pass is a violation of the ADA Act. Lawsuits need to be started against any city that violates the law.

I volunteered at an elementary school in the Castro and accompnied kindergartners from the school to the public library. Along the way we passed many homeless passed out on the sidewalks. The kids asked what they were doing. In the library, itself, there was a homeless man loitering in the restroom and a librarian had to accompney a kid into the restroom for his safety. It's very sad that San Francisco citizens have to tolerate this.

The root cause of the problem is the Federal law (the 2018 decision in Martin v. Boise) that allows homeless to camp anywhere on the street. Many cities including LA under different Federal Judges allow cites to move homeless camps once those cities have 60% homeless shelter capacity. However, the Federal Judge in charge of San Francisco required the city to have 100% homeless shelter capacity before any action is allowed. Did you watch the entire video? The reporter said the Federal Judge who put the SF homeless camp sweep on hold lives in Albany where homeless camp is illegal?

Maybe1.... might have started with Occupy Wall Street (2011). A few homeless encampments kept stubbornly returning (even after OccupyWS) and the homeless issues, snowballed. Big-city governments were once, more responsible toward citizens, but this also changed drastically in the last 10-15 years.
The store owners all need to pay all the homeless people to move their encampment over to the property of city officials-either in front of government buildings or officials’ residences.
That’s the best idea yet…put up homeless tents in front of the politicians homes…how many of the politicians actually walk through the homeless camps, none because they fear the homeless people…

I feel bad for the people who are living in the encampments, but I think enough is enough. Especially for someone who has turned down assistance. I understand and agree more affordable housing is needed, but I also think no matter how affordable it would get, that Toro just wants free housing and would rather live on the streets than have to follow any given rules.

What if the city just donates the sidewalks to the businesses and the business can put signs on no loitering, no trespassing, no encampments on now business owned sidewalks? The business can advertise on the side walks, put up fences with gates and entry, doors, or whatever. It can eliminate these tents to pile up at their front door. A business pays a lot of taxes and should be respected. this helps get rid of the people living on the streets and make them go into affordable housing? Those people say they have rights yet they do not pay taxes, work, clean nothing but always destroying property, devalue Realestate to nothing and devour cities into ghost towns. Yet the business pays taxes and contributes to the tax base not the homeless getting free everything on the streets. Of businesses close down then they might loose a lot of free services. The business taxes is the biggest contributor in Federal and State level taxes. The business owners should have way more rights in this country!
That's actually a half-way good idea. Not the gate part. But making the attached sidewalk part of a business's property causes the bums obstructing them to no longer be camped on "public" land and hence trespassers. But like I said before, California has no respect for small business people. It will never happen.

These encampments are a 'Health and Safety" issue because often times they have rampant drug use, human waste discharge and enormous amounts of trash within them. Those that want to be the "champion" for these encampments and proclaim this a civil rights issue, when it is not, would call the police if these encampments were on the sidewalk in front of their houses, to get them out.
San Francisco's downtown area is almost 25% recovered after covid. So, last place in the nation. Here in Portland we're about to hit 30% recovered!

I haven’t been back since I moved 2017. As a Sausalito resident, and long time school teacher, it is very sad as you say. I don’t feel safe visiting anymore and I do miss it 💔😢

The problem with the so-called "Left" has ALWAYS been that they latch onto some absurd, experimental, airy-fairy "solution" until the effects of their "noble experiment" become unbearable (at the tax-payers' expense of course). The notion that anyone will ever be able to build new, free housing for every person wanting to live in California (or anywhere else for that matter) without totally devastating the environment and bankrupting the state in a crooked capitalist society is utterly absurd. And the vast number of those living in tents on our sidewalks obviously don't want housing, even if it's free. Unless the politicians are total morons they all know this. But their giant egos will not allow them to just say, "You know what?...I admit I was wrong. We should try something else."

Time and time again, residents of affluent neighborhoods vote against affordable housing to preserve the legacy of said neighborhood. Looks like the people who voted to keep San Francisco the same have unintentionally created a monster.

Need a law that bans sleeping on the street. Kind of like parking tickets. Need to find out how these people are getting the money to buy drugs. If they are on disability, cut of the money flow. Then these people can not stay high on the governments dime.
The "helping the homeless" lobby is very strong. They make money trying to help the 'unhoused'. If they succeeded, the money tree might die.
So many people would die if we did that.

How do the ‘unhoused’ people afford a lawyer? Put that effort into getting a job. I’m sure a lot of businesses would rather see them as possible employees instead.
So the judge said the sweeps of homeless camps had to stop lives in a community where homeless camps are illegal. I think that's what you call irony.
If the storeowners want change, stop requesting the city to do something and put down the useless signs. What would work is taking the city to court for creating a public nuisance. I would be in court every week until they did something. That homeless guy knows how the system works.

Public sidewalks are for that exact group of people; the public! They are meant for the use of ALL pedestrian traffic.
It should be illegal for a homeless person to pitch tent on a sidewalk, and claim that spot of real estate as their own!
Their tents/property/junk should be subject to IMMEDIATE removal, without dumb drawn-out processes that take weeks or months.
