    With the little red tumbler, you can pop the lid off but just squeezing the canister. It’ll just pop out. Then you don’t have to worry about hurting the side of the lid with the spoon. I love mine too! And, wetting the O ring with the soapy water makes it really easy to get back on. Love the necklace! Hope to take another class.

    I agree it would be strategic to have both ;-) not financially but aesthetic........I use a lot of time cleaning manually or with a Foredom and my arms and shoulders are suffering so investing in one or two tumblers would be a perfect strategy ..

    Leslie, if you change those thin pins in your magnetic tumbler with something thicker or rounder, the satin surface that you are getting right now is going to change.

      Vatsek what kind of different shot could you put in it? I never thought of this! I have the stainless steel mixed shot, will the tiny ones work if I pick out a bunch? Will it not be magnetic? Hmmm

    A nice and detailed overview that shows the differences between both and with the different shots too. After this treatment, pieces are just ready for their real polishing.
    We learned in school that tumblers do not polishing anything. This video confirms it.
    Professionally, tumblers are used to clean pieces, whether from casting residue, grime or other contaminants. But that cleaning and burnishing, although very useful, does not equate a true polishing and cannot replace it.
    So if people are satisfied with this type of finish, good for them, but they shouldn't be led to believe that this can replace true polishing. Which is an art in itself, and not that easy either. So I can understand people to want a shortcut, but they won't get a true polished finish either.

      Annie a tumbler BURNISHES your metal. It you use mixed steel shot , burnishing will will shine it. Similar to taking a burnishing too and rubbing it on a piece of metal and you will see. A Magnetic pin finisher (which is not a Tumbler) it will give you a satin finish. You can use both polishing compound with together to achieve the finish you prefer on your metal. If you have a lot of texture and details on your piece with tiny knooks and crannies it's difficult to get in to all the tiny spaces, with just polishing compound. Happy Smithing!

      @@LeslieKailVillarreal We agree, these machines burnish metal but don't polish it. Yes, they provide a very helpful measure of finish for hard to reach areas. Yes, some people might prefer different finishing techniques than standard polishing.
      The difference in result between both types of machines also has a lot to do with the type of medium used, besides the fact that in a magnetic tumbler the piece is hit more directly by the medium. So if someone chose a medium with larger or smaller pieces, the results would vary accordingly.

    Hi Leslie! I love your videos. I'm working in a mix of copper and sterling and I sometimes use my second hand Harbor Freight tumbler to work-harden. I have grown tired of replacing the belt so I need an upgrade. I love the finish that the magnetic tumbler gave, but I'm wondering if it would be too gentle for work-hardening. What do you think? Thanks in advance! :)

    • @LeslieKailVillarreal
      @LeslieKailVillarreal  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Ginger! Though many think a tumbler is great for work hardening it really doesn't do much of it. Harbor freight is the worst tumbler ever made next to the Lortone! I hated them both always breaking. Work hardening should be done with a soft leather mallet, copper is super soft after it's heated for sure. ( I think a magnetizing pin finisher would do more to work hard than a rotary tumbler would because the rotating pins are magnetized and hit the metal with a bit more force the a gentle tumbling action though!)

      @@LeslieKailVillarreal Thanks Leslie =0) I have some silver castings, received them fresh out of wax cast, they have the spru on a bit still, so require me to file/saw off excess. And then hand finish them. I've achieved this nice bright finish by hand but is labour intensive. Do you think i can use a method to achieve that same high shine in the tumbler, after cutting off the sprus and just a minimal hand sanding. I considered that the satin finish magnetic machine could be good to use before running in the tumbler. As this may act siniliarly to sanding and achieving a 1200 grit surface. And then once placed in the tumbler would achieve a high shine. Have you experimented with this 2 step machine approach? Or would you just do a pre sand of some soft in the tumbler. I just think the magnetic tumbler could replace, using tumbler for presand rotation. And just use tumbler for final polish.
