I would like to thank you for your attention to the details and the efforts you are putting into making this a better car. As a veteran of 20 years in the Air Force and someone who is recovering from cancer, I want to thank you for treating my Nova to some outstanding work and attention to the little things. I look forward to driving it like I stole it. Doug
Thank you for being patient and letting us take our time to make your car better.. It has come a long way, and has more to give. It's going to be a twister for sure. Happy Thanksgiving!
For dual quad set ups, always take the carbs off the car. Set up each at a time for initial idle speed screw settings, which is primary set for square transfer slots, and secondary open 1/4 turn. Set both carbs exactly the same. Power valve should be 2-2.5” below idle vacuum. So just put 6.5 in until you run the engine and get timing set. Accel pumps, start with pink cams in 1 and 1. And as you were saying the pump shot was late, that’s all adjustment of the accel pump bolt/spring. All you need to do is lengthen the bolt. If you run out of adjustment before there is zero tension on the spring, then you take the lever off and bend the end that rides on the cam downward. Then you start adjusting the bolt/spring again. You set it after you set the idle speed screws. Set so that when you lift up on the bolt, you cannot see a gap between the head of the bolt and the accel pump lever. Then you need to ensure the accel pump diaphragm doesn’t bottom out. That’s where the .015” feeler gauge comes in. Open throttle wide open, then make sure you can slide the gauge between the head of the bolt and the lever without making the spring on the bolt compress. It’s a fine adjustment. You want just barely that .015” travel still for the diaphragm. You will need to do this 4 times of course. Ideally a tunnel ram dual quad likes 1:1 ratio for primary to secondary of each carb as well. And then you can also just remove the power valves and square jet. If you don’t want to do that, then progressive is ok, but the power valve can’t be too late opening. Second the linkage needs to be set up perfectly. No binding, both carbs starting to move at the exact same time, and reaching full throttle together. The angle of the arm that sits on the long splined shaft, needs to be the same as the angle of the actual throttle shaft bracket on the primary of each car itself. From throttle shaft to where the rod attaches, that angle must match the black bracket where the other end of the rod attaches. For the other arms down to where the throttle cable attaches, you need to minimize the sweep and angles of them. If you like I can send pictures of proper set up. Spark plugs for a big block, all motor and 10:1 with aftermarket aluminum heads should be NGK FR5 or BKR5E. The cam duration and LSA will determine the timing set up, but tunnel rams like lots of initial timing and a short fast curve. As well as some vacuum advance. I would set up the msd for 26 at idle and 36 all in by about 2500 rpm. You can get 10 degree advance bushings. FBo Systems. Or if the cam is lots of duration, locking out the distributor may need to be done. But then it’s not as easy to use vacuum advance.
The car that got me into muscle cars was my brothers 72 nova ss. Solid lifter 350 Muncie 4 speed and a 12 bolt with 4.56’s. That car was king of our town back in the mid 80’s.
Can certainly understand that! Old school build and in a time where something like that really could hurt some feelings. Especially if it could get traction!
@@LucoreAuto that was the problem, on 28” tall bias ply tires he always spun through 1st and second on the street and the track.. was a ton of fun though, and one of those things I’ll remember always.. happy thanksgiving
Happy Thanksgiving Rich, Austin and shop family. I miss my first car, a 1970 Nova I got at 17 in 1975. No where near the caliber of that Blue Beauty. Stay safe all, God Bless.
That is one cool car! hay you can always call Bill to help you out on them carbs. he is the best carb tuner I have seen in along time. Happy thanksgiving to you guys!
That Bill is a busy busy man, he's barely got time to look up much less come over to play with cars at our place 😉 But he certainly DOES know a thing or two about a thing or two!
Quality video and work as always.Glad you have old school and new school knowledge. And the #1 thing they cant teach is just mechanical abilty and common sense.
Old School, New School, we're all in this together! Unfortunately most shops don't or aren't willing to live that anymore. Though we certainly understand why, a lot of this stuff is pretty slow going
Cool stuff. My brother built a 71 Nova - 427 with EFI and a Tremec 5 speed, 12 bolt with 4 bar rear suspension. On an early burnout it ripped a suspension mount off of the frame. Recently he took it to the drag strip and pranged the entire rear end off to the side! It is a BEAST. Fun to ride in, though.
Beautiful car and I'm sure you will get it figured out you always do we need more shops like you guys are you still take pride in your work and happy Thanksgiving to you and the lucore shop family
Thank you! We are incredibly blessed with the vehicles we get to work on and the people we get to call customers. It's YOU folks that allow us to do what we do. Happy Thanksgiving to you as well Sir!
Nice job as always i had 2 4s on a small block long time ago i don think people relize how streetable they can be it took time to sort it out but was cool as hell
If you want the pump shot to start sooner all you have to do is take the play out of the pump lever where the addjustment is for the pump, screw and spring...
I have always put in One qt of royal purple for wear protection. Have had Perfect record using it. Not once have ever in any capacity, had any oil related engine problems, Never!!! Actually, since late 70's I have had ONE RULE, Change oil & Filter 2500 miles or twice a year on my sit all winter rigs! And make sure all engines have a proper functional PVC system.
Happy Thanksgiving Rich to you and yours. Had a six pack intake for small block Ford from Shelby American back in the day. Ran around town on the center carb and then as throttle increased the front started opening up and when it was 3/4 the back started opening up. You really felt them coming in.
There's a reason why mechanical linkages were used for multiple carburetors because sheathed cables can bind or tear. Solid steel or aluminum/ steel rods ,from the firewall to the carburetors to reduce the chance of the carburetors sticking wide open and causing a run on situation. Just my 2 cents.
Sweet Nova , I have a 72 SS Nova , I have slowly been working on getting a destroaked 350 built to put in , it's a 331 ci now still need to figure out what cam grind to go with and wether I want to use another gear drive , like the Pete Jackson ones I have used for 20+years or go a different rout . God Bless and Happy Thanksgiving
Why you dont teek the camera whit you when you test the car. That is what i lyk to see more off you on this channel. Love the channel very machs. Greeting from Belgium and my Georges.
Hard to tell really with how badly this fueling was going it does NOT take long to fuel foul and blacken oil! But she's got a belly full of fresh and a WHOLE lot better now!

Nice car done with all the best parts, just a little fine-tuning for Rich to do. Happy Thanksgiving guys!!
Lots of little bits will make this thing MUCH better! Happy Thanksgiving to you as well!
Happy Thanksgiving guys!

I'm rather a Mopar guy, but the sound of a nasty big block Chevy is REALLY SWEET!
It plays a good tune for sure, and we were still taking it kind of easy on it with those pulls! 😀
Happy Thanksgiving
Thanks Kenny, Happy Thanksgiving to you as well!
Hey Rich, looks like the parking brake cable is rubbing the driveshaft on the 72 Nova. Might want to look at that too
Good catch!
Love the videos. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family
Keep on keeping on 👍✌
Thanks for watching and thanks for the well wishes! Happy Thanksgiving to you as well!
Happy holiday Rich
Thanks Mike hope you had a great Thanksgiving as well!

We actually need to figure out a good camera system we can quickly and easily transfer between cars. It's in the works!
Looks like a little lack of maintenance on the oil there but very nice looking car 👍👍
Hard to tell really with how badly this fueling was going it does NOT take long to fuel foul and blacken oil! But she's got a belly full of fresh and a WHOLE lot better now!
Hey do you guys happen to know any history on that Nova?? I swear I may have owned that car from around 1981-1986 in Akron Ohio.
Whats the fuel pressure set at? Needs a driveshaft loop too
Go Ducks !!
Small cam for a 489 cu.in.
I’d be pissed if I saw you working on my car without a fender cover.
Awful small shocks on the rear?
tell the customer to dump that tunnel ram and get a victor intake and a good 950 holley
Happy Thanksgiving
