No, that's an incorrect claim made in the video. Where in Q19:91-98, does the text have any parallels to the non-canonical infancy gospels? It actually criticises the idea that God has taken a Son. Even if you think the Qur'an ultimately borrows stories from earlier sources, the Qurans formulation of those stories - i.e. its wording - is unique to the Quran and thus Islam. And the Birmingham folios are part of a larger codex that contains 16 additional folios (in Paris). See Alba Fedeli's thesis.

Bravo! I have been saying this since 2015. The Birmingham material is NOT a Qur'an or even a fragment of the Qur'an. It is a mere 2 pages of material that EVENTUALLY made t into the Qur'an. The stories these pages contain were popular and widely known in the 7th century, so you could hardly call them "revelations" from some god. Moreover, the dates of Birmingham (568-645 AD) completely contradict the SIN. The earliest is before Muhammad was supposedly born, while the latest is before Uthman made his famous recension. If anything, the Birmingham folios are evidence AGAINST Islam, when viewed in their proper historical context.
To be fair. The dating is about the year the animal died. So in essence the date of the making of the parchment. A parchment may be stored for years before being used. It could be from the year Uthman compiled the Quran. Borrowing popular stories around that region to attract both Christians, Jew, pagans to join their new unitarian religion.

Regardless of what you think about the Qur'an's sources, if you have a manuscript that attests the exact same wording of the Qur'an, then that manuscript obviously contains the Qur'an. I mean, sure the Qur'an often recounts the same stories as some pre-Islamic texts. But there are always differences, both in content and wording between the Qur'an and these texts. If the manuscript has the same text as the Qur'an we have today, then it's much more likely that it's simply a Quran manuscript, rather than a pre-Islamic source which the author of the Qur'an used. Keep in mind that we know it has 16 additional folios which contain additional surahs (some complete, I believe). The surah order is identical to the text that we use today. And so is the wording of the text. So we have two scenarios: 1. The Birmingham manuscript post-dates Uthman's standardization. This is suggested by palaeography and basically all experts agree with this dating. 2. The Birmingham manuscript pre-dates Uthman's standardization and was one of the sources used by the Prophet (or even Uthman) to compose the Qur'an. If so, then we'd have to assume that whoever was responsible for producing today's text chose to accurately copy earlier texts word for word. And somehow, these texts have survived until today! Needless to say, no real expert agrees with such an early dating.

Superb series on the Quranic manuscripts. Muslims have quieted down on those Birmingham Folios (pages) after all the hype, but there are always those guys who haven't gotten the word yet. Great review on the topic. It often takes several reviews of this type for the topic to be digested properly, for facts to establish themselves and for the dust to settle on all the claims we hear on perfect preservation, an Uthmanic manuscript, no Quranic variants, etc.
The video above contains several errors. First of all, where in Q19:91-98 is there any parallels to the infancy Gospels? Elsewhere in Surah Maryam, there are indeed parallels, but in this specific passage? Secondly, even if you think the author of the Qur'an borrowed from earlier pre-Islamic sources, the Qur'an's formulation and wording of these stories is unique. The fact that the Birmingham fragments have the exact same wording, the basmalah - and even the exact same Surah changeover from Q19 to 20 - etc. points to an obvious fact: this is a Quranic manuscript. Not some sort of pre-Quranic source that has magically survived until today. Thirdly, Alba Fedeli has shown in her thesis that the Birmingham folios belong to a larger codex. 16 additional folios of it can be found in Paris. So they contain other surahs as well. It's also important to note that scholars generally date the Birmingham manuscript to the late 7th or early 8th century. There are manuscripts earlier than it which contain even larger portions of the Qur'an like the Codex Parisino Petropolitanus (45% of the Qur'an), DAM 01-25.1, etc.

And both the Birmingham folios and the Paris folios are considered to have been written after the Uthmanic revison of the quran. And that was some 20 years after Mohammed had died and that quran was written in only one dialect. Today we have some 40 different Arabic versions of the quran we know of, so wrote those?

It's more than needing help from human endeavor, it's the work of God. It was exceptionally hard if not impossible to preach the Good News in Islamic countries. He's made it far easier to reach Muslim immigrants and they export it back into their old country through their family relations. Dr Jay. Radiocarbon dating is accurate. The issue is that it is not precise for it is all too easily subject to contamination, and environmental variation. It also assumes constant decay parameters which are known to be variable. Please be more careful with your words. Otherwise you and Al Fardi are doing good work and have been the cause of many a good argument. My advice to all who use it, is use it prayerfully, respectfully, privately and lovingly. Thanks.
For an average man accurate dating should give exact years (at least). You highlighted some of the reasons why radiocarbon dating would not give that precision of dates… So in a language used by an average man you showed why radiocarbon dating is inaccurate.

If SURAH 18:17-31 in the folio mentioned 7 "sleepers of Ephesus" then is not Quran, because Muhammad never mentioned the numbers of the sleepers of Ephesus in the Quran. Muhammad narrated the story without knowing the exact numbers or names of the sleepers

Quran was written down as well as memorized during prophets time. After he passed away it was ordered properly and validated for authenticity and copies made and distributed throughout the Muslim world. That's the copy we have today. No changes. No versions.

Sometimes when I read a title of a video I imagine hearing drum roll just after it. Those folios are textual evidence for the whisper game and how it is done on paper over extended periods of time. Each generation of scribes and rulers adding and subtracting from previous documents to suite their own man made political agenda.

It's also part of a large codex. Alba Fedeli identified 16 additional folios that are kept in Paris that belong to the same codex. Again, these folios conform to the text that we have today.

It's a weird error that he keeps repeating in different videos. It's probably around 63 verses in the 2 folios. It contains parts of surahs 18-20, so 33 verses is definitely wrong. Either way, the Birmingham folios actually once belonged to a larger codex. 16 additional folios from this same codex are preserved in Paris (Arabe 328c). A manuscript is just something that is handwritten , these two folios are manuscripts, nobody ever claimed that the Birmingham folios were a complete manuscript of the Quran.

Dude. By the time of Uthman, much of north africa to border of Afghanistan was under Muslim control. They have all the means to compile it. Also the material used to write at that time were mostly parchment, which are expensive, yes, but also much more stronger than Papyrus. The proper recitation never ceased during the Prophet's life and afterwards. The Quran was never destroyed by anyone. Uthman, one of the closest companions of the Prophet, himself memorized the entire Quran, so there is no question that the Quran today is the same one that the Prophet recited in its entirety before his death.

No, that's an incorrect claim made in the video. Where in Q19:91-98, does the text have any parallels to the non-canonical infancy gospels? It actually criticises the idea that God has taken a Son. Even if you think the Qur'an ultimately borrows stories from earlier sources, the Qurans formulation of those stories - i.e. its wording - is unique to the Quran and thus Islam.
And the Birmingham folios are part of a larger codex that contains 16 additional folios (in Paris). See Alba Fedeli's thesis.

Bravo! I have been saying this since 2015. The Birmingham material is NOT a Qur'an or even a fragment of the Qur'an. It is a mere 2 pages of material that EVENTUALLY made t into the Qur'an. The stories these pages contain were popular and widely known in the 7th century, so you could hardly call them "revelations" from some god. Moreover, the dates of Birmingham (568-645 AD) completely contradict the SIN. The earliest is before Muhammad was supposedly born, while the latest is before Uthman made his famous recension. If anything, the Birmingham folios are evidence AGAINST Islam, when viewed in their proper historical context.

Regardless of what you think about the Qur'an's sources, if you have a manuscript that attests the exact same wording of the Qur'an, then that manuscript obviously contains the Qur'an. I mean, sure the Qur'an often recounts the same stories as some pre-Islamic texts. But there are always differences, both in content and wording between the Qur'an and these texts. If the manuscript has the same text as the Qur'an we have today, then it's much more likely that it's simply a Quran manuscript, rather than a pre-Islamic source which the author of the Qur'an used.
Keep in mind that we know it has 16 additional folios which contain additional surahs (some complete, I believe). The surah order is identical to the text that we use today. And so is the wording of the text. So we have two scenarios:
1. The Birmingham manuscript post-dates Uthman's standardization. This is suggested by palaeography and basically all experts agree with this dating.
2. The Birmingham manuscript pre-dates Uthman's standardization and was one of the sources used by the Prophet (or even Uthman) to compose the Qur'an. If so, then we'd have to assume that whoever was responsible for producing today's text chose to accurately copy earlier texts word for word. And somehow, these texts have survived until today! Needless to say, no real expert agrees with such an early dating.

Superb series on the Quranic manuscripts. Muslims have quieted down on those Birmingham Folios (pages) after all the hype, but there are always those guys who haven't gotten the word yet. Great review on the topic. It often takes several reviews of this type for the topic to be digested properly, for facts to establish themselves and for the dust to settle on all the claims we hear on perfect preservation, an Uthmanic manuscript, no Quranic variants, etc.
The video above contains several errors.
First of all, where in Q19:91-98 is there any parallels to the infancy Gospels? Elsewhere in Surah Maryam, there are indeed parallels, but in this specific passage?
Secondly, even if you think the author of the Qur'an borrowed from earlier pre-Islamic sources, the Qur'an's formulation and wording of these stories is unique. The fact that the Birmingham fragments have the exact same wording, the basmalah - and even the exact same Surah changeover from Q19 to 20 - etc. points to an obvious fact: this is a Quranic manuscript. Not some sort of pre-Quranic source that has magically survived until today.
Thirdly, Alba Fedeli has shown in her thesis that the Birmingham folios belong to a larger codex. 16 additional folios of it can be found in Paris. So they contain other surahs as well.
It's also important to note that scholars generally date the Birmingham manuscript to the late 7th or early 8th century. There are manuscripts earlier than it which contain even larger portions of the Qur'an like the Codex Parisino Petropolitanus (45% of the Qur'an), DAM 01-25.1, etc.

It's more than needing help from human endeavor, it's the work of God. It was exceptionally hard if not impossible to preach the Good News in Islamic countries. He's made it far easier to reach Muslim immigrants and they export it back into their old country through their family relations.

Dr Jay. Radiocarbon dating is accurate. The issue is that it is not precise for it is all too easily subject to contamination, and environmental variation. It also assumes constant decay parameters which are known to be variable. Please be more careful with your words.

● He asks that people not be held captive unless military considerations require it (8:67) and demands that prisoners of war always be released, either out of kindness or by ransom (prisoner exchange, for example), even if war is ongoing (47:4).
● He says to protect everyone who seeks safety and peace, even if they're on the hostile side and in wartime (9:6, 60:7-9).

A manuscript is just something that is handwritten , these two folios are manuscripts, nobody ever claimed that the Birmingham folios were a complete manuscript of the Quran.

The Quran is ensuing and latest Revelation and it acts as the Criterion over the current Torah and Gospels.

In any case, there is controversy as to whether this manuscript was written during the last years of the Prophet, or under Abu Bakr or Uthman, both of whom were close companions of the Prophet, were known to memorize the entire Quran and were engaged in the written preservation of the Quran. So, there is no argument about the integrity of the manuscript; that it does date from the last years of the Prophets life to no later than the caliphate of Umar ibn Affan.

@@garybowings1538 The Quran was and is recited at least 5 times per day and during the month of Ramadan, the entire Quran is recited from beginning to end. The proper recitation never ceased during the Prophet's life and afterwards. The Quran was never destroyed by anyone. Uthman, one of the closest companions of the Prophet, himself memorized the entire Quran, so there is no question that the Quran today is the same one that the Prophet recited in its entirety before his death.
