Becky, considering you have to do earthworks and retaining walls anyway, have you thought about having your greenhouse semi buried. What i mean it's having the first metre ( in height) of your structure in the actual ground so that you have better passive thermal insulation for keeping it at a constant temperature, particularly in cold climates.

If I was the worker, I would rather have the chickens out of my way. Imagine having to lug around cinder blocks or heavy shovels full of dirt and having to pause and hold that weight because you suddenly have chickens underfoot. It's not very considerate, especially as she said "how annoying" the chickens are. 2 cookies aren't worth me putting my back out.

I’m sure you’re checking the amount of sunlight you’ll be getting to your greenhouse. In my experience, with 7 greenhouses so far, you’re further ahead to hire a greenhouse company to install your greenhouse if possible. If you go with a kit greenhouse, be aware that the anchoring is key to its survival. We put up an inexpensive 6x8 twin-wall greenhouse about 10 yrs ago. Because my brilliant farmer hubby anchored it to railroad ties, not only did I get some extra needed height, but it’s stood thru heavy wind and snow. We’ve had to replace a few panels here or there, but it’s still up!

  • @shabbyshopper

My only advice is to really make sure you understand your sun exposure of the green house. You want sun on the north side and shade on the south side. The heat, extreme heat, is insane and SO HARD on your plants if no afternoon shade if not at least dapples shade. Same area as you. I have a Clima Pod, so not a metal & glass, but a great green house. We are very happy with it. Go as big as you can afford, because once you get the hang of your green house -- you'll want bigger! Looks great! ETA: Also, make sure you plumb out water & electric and drain fields if you can to your green house.

Before they put down stone I would talk to others in the area you might know that have it. For us, it was a horrible decision. We live in the south and the bugs were worse with the stones, weeding was worse and harder to manage and it increased the temperature around our plants making it much hotter. For us, we would never do that again and only use mulch. So, again, ask around in your areas and see what experience other people have had with stone instead of mulch.

Congratulations to both You and Josh on the arrival of your Baby Son.
I just love your respect that you both have for your son by NOT intentionally and then blurring out his features when accidentally they appear on camera.
In response to your greenhouse I am not sure or misunderstood if you said you were going to use glass.
Here in various parts of Australia we have massive hail storms which create much damage (actually this last weekend widespread areas suffered) even in some of our low highland areas, with a lot experienced expensive damage.
Not sure if your area has this problem or not. Would hate to see you having to replace glass.
More power to you Becky with what you have achieved thus far and for going forward.

Becky, I have a 18’ x 30’ greenhouse. We bought a carport and built the rest in with sheet metal, polycarbonate, wood, windows, wood and a storm door. We ended up poring a concrete with a drain in the center. I studied for down here in Texas for 3 years and that is why we used some metal. I would be happy to email some pics if you would like to see how we built it.

Hey Becky! So exciting to see the garden come together. Just a word of caution: Jess from Roots and refuge just found out the hard way that pea gravel is very loud in videos. She is having to put in stepping stones so that she can walk in her garden and record audio at the same time. I wouldn't want to see you fall into the same trap with your stone walkways.

It is a huge undertaking. But, for someone like Becky, who invests so much time and energy into their garden and preserving the foods- it seems like it could pay off relatively quickly for her. For someone like ME... maybe not so much. I tend to jump gung-ho into something with every piece of my being- giving my all to it.... then, it quickly fizzles. My brain jumps to other things. I get distracted so easily. But, I feel like within only a few years that this investment will more than pay off for Becky and her family. I don't know how she does it. Imagine the amount of money that this garden and subsequent preservation will save them is astronomical. I love how she invests in the most important things and is frugal on the things not so important. Becky, you truly are an inspiration! Since watching you, I've been a bit braver in the kitchen and less critical of myself when a recipe does not go as planned.

Love your channel, made your pastie recipe from a past video, big hit, thank you! You asked about greenhouses, I know you are pretty set on an actual greenhouse, but not sure if you have considered your basement as a greenhouse. That is what we have done and it has worked amazing for the past 2 years. No supplemental heat needed, convenient location for everyday watering and maintenance, no glass, plastic to worry about blowing away in the weather. It does involve hanging lights and setting up tables but its something to think about!
