Some crews even painted their bombs. Tanks and even artillery shells sometimes got this kind of love too. This kind of personalization is rare these days for a great many reasons, including the fact that it sadly catches a lot of flack from the international media. There are _two_ places where you _do_ actually see this kind of personalization - B-52s. Because most B-52s are _fucking old_ and their paint is completely irrelevant to their defense it's not uncommon to see nose art on them. Secondly, when you see pictures of M1 Abrams in the field - take a peek at the barrel, there's a decent chance there'll be something there or on the fume extractor(the bulge in the middle).
USAF F-4s in Vietnam had shark's teeth. And VF-111, the USN fighter squadron had shark's teeth nose art for decades from F-8s, to F-4s, to F-14s. Thank you for the video!
The Fairchild Republic A-10 'Warthog' aircraft firing 30mm depleted uranium ammo in front of its enemies from above with the fearsome shark jaw paint job is the most scary thing to the enemy and most joyful thing to its allies at the same time! 4:31- 5:03
I was genuinely slightly unsettled by that and it was only an image, can’t imagine how scary it must be to see that thing getting ready to strafe you head on
The Roland C.II was also known as the "Walfisch", so it made sense to paint a large "shark style" mouth on it. This plane had a few interesting paint schemes as well. One had fish scales, another a mouth like a fish. It was a fairly formidable plane for it's time as it was made of an all wood fuselage, which was hard to shoot down. Armed with a rear facing Parabellum MG14 and a forward facing Spandau, it was a tough kill for an inexperienced pilot. The Red Baron (MvR) actually started his long WWI career flying them in late 1915.
It's quite simliar to dragon. While dragon can burst out a deadly blaze at their enemy, A-10 can burst out deadly 30 mms depleted uranium brrrrrrrrtttt at 3900 rpm
The A-10's cannon burst has had the moniker of "Dragon's Breath" for a long time... If you hear the "BRRRRRRRRT" you're fine... if you don't hear it, it's too late.
I was actually part of the 23RD EMS Flying Tigers when I was in the USAF about 4 years ago, all of our A-10s at the base had the shark mouth painted on. We are apparently the only squadron in the entire US armed forces that are allowed to use the sharks mouth design.
The 23RD are the Flying Tigers, since the US absorbed them back into the USAAF upon our official entry into WWII. Before the 23RD flew the A-10A, they flew the A7D too. Before that, they flew lots of other aircraft, all with the shark teeth motif.
My uncle George Klein was a US sergeant during WWII and was based in the uk. He was great at art and painted many a plane nose during the war before returning home with my British aunty as his bride Mary. Both are passed on now but im extremely proud of the both. May they rest in peace.
One reason there is less shark teeth or art in general is because of radar. Most modern aircraft use a classified radar retarding paint to reduce their radar signature. It is unlikely for the government to just give this paint to standard troops or get approved to use it by command. So a giant art piece in the front will create a much larger radar tracking surface. Along with other regulations and assignment rotation that prevent it of course. Personally I would like for every pilot to include some artwork on their assigned bird.

@@Justin-zi5io But you usually make a rotary cannon (or gun) to increase the rate of fire by spreading the heatload onto multiple barrels because otherwise it's wasted weight. Why have multiple barrels if you are going to fire them at a mediocre rate that one barrel could feasably archieve? In fact, revolver cannons work on that very logic. But they still use the faster and more reliable feeding mechanism to increase the ROF anyway, typically to the low 1000+ rpm. But you are technically correct, which is the best kind of correct. (Fun bonus fact, I only know of one actual chaingun in military use, and that's the 25mm Bushmaster on the Bradley and LAV-25...the bolt is run on a chain with an external motor...on further inspection, the 30mm cannon on the Apache is also a chaingun. )

The A-10 of the 23rd Tac Ftr Wg are the direct descendants of the original Flying Tigers. Our unit patch reflects this heritage. The 23rd TFW was once commanded by the son of General Claire Chenault, who was in command of the original Flying Tigers.
i'm glad you mentioned the RAF 112 sqn were first to put the shark's teeth on their P-40's in Egypt.. though perhaps their more famous application was the Flying Tigers... 112 sqn never had a movie made about them with John Wayne...
Simple History: Shark nose arts makes enemy scared
Me: They look cool
I always thought it was just to look badass and to strike fear into the enemy’s heart lol
Everyone is a shark until stuka invented.
The A-10 accompanied by 2 P51 D's was one of my favorite honor flight formations at oshkosh 2019. The only one cooler was when the a10, p51's and F35 all flew in formation. Spectacular.
4:35 Shark teath are also used on some GPS Satalites as well

If a 30mm hits a solft target. They'll turn into pink mist.
Its basically a super sonic Grenade
That's prob a 20mm too. It's not like thats a unique characteristic or anything.
@Brotato rotary cannon does not increase the rof it just is the way the gun works
(Fun bonus fact, I only know of one actual chaingun in military use, and that's the 25mm Bushmaster on the Bradley and LAV-25...the bolt is run on a chain with an external motor...on further inspection, the 30mm cannon on the Apache is also a chaingun. )
"Dedicated to help human suffering"
Reminds me of "I help blind people"
Extra fact: The A-10’s iconic shark mouth is only worn by the 23rd Fighter Group because the squadron descends from the Flying Tigers
The nose art was very effective in scaring the germans away from battle.
"Verdammit Hanz! There are sharks in the sky!"
"Sharks!? How did they get all the way up here!?"
"Who cares!? Run Hanz!"
Coming Soon: “The PAC-MAN Nose Art!” (God forbid).
“Wakka-wakka-wakka-wakka-wakka-wakka!”
They bit off the tales of planes with this art.
Imagine if the boat has shark teeth starts firing 50 cals at you.
You dun goofed.
F4's and Cobras were also some notable craft that used them as well.
"It was meant to scare away enemies". So scary.
Why is the Army + 03606 in reverse at the tail of the UH-1 Huey helicopter from 4:01-4:13?
*Random fact: People can suffer from a psychological disorder called Boanthropy that makes them believe that they are a cow. They try to live their life as a cow.*

my Grandfather flew - a war plane - during WW2. in Pacific. thanks for the appreciation. War was horrible. he was hurt severely . when crashed , in dog fight. God Bless the Heroes . of World Wars. Braver than us. USA, Liberty, Freedom. Appreciate it.
I wish I could of saw some of those. I've seen PICTURES of the tiger/shark intimidation artwork, but not in person.
The shark teeth on the Tomcats looked amazing.
Day 2 of asking to do a video on the F14 Tomcat
First time seeing the fame nose art was turning the Flying Tigers episode on Dogfights
The real answer is much more simple- if the opposing pilot sees shark teeth, they’ll assume it’s a shark and not a plane.
and shooting down a thunderbolt is easier than you think

The World: let's send 16 year olds to war.
Generals: why do all the aircraft have shark teeth painted on them?
16 yo's: .... to cause fear in the enemy 😎
I'm German, and most of the old folks have been scared only by hearing the sound of planes for the rest of their lifes.I don't think the painting make any diffrence.
Can confirm this.
nose art on planes. reason: TERRIFY the enemies.
When I was a kid I used to draw those shark teeth on paper planes. It was a lot of fun and they looked really cool 🦈
Imagine the last thing you see when you die is a flying shark
