None of this is surprising, per se. BUT people forget that social media platforms like Twitter have governmental protections because they are supposed to be "platforms". If Twitter employees are censoring content, and moderating things so that only ONE side is presented - they are no longer platforms. They should be stripped of their immunities. At that point they are no different then a news organization (i.e. they can be held responsible for their actions).
The whole point of social media immunity, was so that service providers were not held liable for what their customers do. They are just providing a service, and if someone wants to do something illegal on that - the responsibility falls on the individual. But based on all these leaked files, Twitter has stepped far beyond being a service provider, and are actively shaping what people see and don't see. They decide who is allowed to be heard and not heard - on a completely arbitrary basis.
The "this is what free speech is" argument falls apart legally (under California state law), as Twitter must provide every user with the same rules/outlines. And if a user breaks those rules, Twitter is within their right to ban. But what these leaks again have shown, is that Twitter was banning people who didn't break any of the rules listed. There is actually a lawsuit going on right now where a journalist WON their first pre-trial against Twitter, for de-platforming him for reasons not listed in the Twitter policy/rules. He used California state law (where Twitter is located), and was told his case could proceed for discrimination. Basically Twitter asks users to agree to their Terms of Service, but according to California - Twiter must also abide by their terms and service as well (or else Twitter has violated their contract with you).
So I wonder if that case sets a precedent, if we will see more lawsuits popping up. Also crazy that the Biden admin asked Twitter to ban regular citizens, and have regular people's tweets deleted. I wonder if thats a violation of their first Amendment Right? A sitting President is literally asking a tech company to de-platform, even tho those accounts didnt break any rules. That is pretty wild. I DOUBT that would happen tho. But still something to think about.

The problem with people making the comment about how the 1st Amendment doesn't apply to private companies is this - both sides of the aisle, Democrats AND Republicans - were requesting and receiving help from Twitter to delete posts!
If Twitter was doing it on their own, that would be just fine... but the SECOND someone in the Federal government requests it and it happens it IS breaking the 1st Amendment! That is textbook governmental suppression of free speech, and there;s already case law of this precise thing with newspapers suppressing stories at the behest of governmental authority and the government losing!

Furthermore, I'd say this repairman did his duty, as outlined in Delaware's laws (where this happened); mandating that criminal evidence (like child pornography) are disclosed to the proper authorities.
"A customer’s Fourth Amendment rights against warrantless searches and seizures wouldn’t necessarily apply if the repair people were to happen upon evidence through the course of routine servicing and turn it over to law enforcement on their own volition. .. One could argue that fact that the hard drive was reportedly abandoned may also give law enforcement more leeway to search it, though the question of how the Fourth Amendment applies to discarded personal electronic devices still hasn’t been settled by the courts."

Just like other issues, the story is being spun to focus on the "how did this story get handled, and why it was bad" and glazing over the content of what the story told. This happened with the Snowden leaks, and Hillary's e-mail leaks. The content of what was leaked is the important bit - and in the case of Hunter's laptop the content showed something MUCH worse than illicit drug use.

That's about it. Also Matt Taibi failed to show bias in moderation, the only evidence he showed was that Twitter employees gave more money to Democrat candidates than Republican candidates since a lot of Twitter employees live in California, but that doesn't actually prove that Twitter staff listened to requests from Democrats more than requests from Republicans. that's not to say there couldn't be a bias in moderation, but Taibi failed to prove it

That's literally the inner workings of conspiracy theorists. They take public information, claim only THEY know about it, and then make some other wild bullshit conclusions on the back end that can't be proven. The idea is that idiots like you do research and find out the public information to confirm the person isn't making shit up, and then when you can't find the other bullshit they made up, you think "Oh shit, they're hiding it from me and this guy is some super smart brilliant hacker man with insider information" even though they're manipulating you and betting on you being too stupid to have critical thinking skills.
Here's an example: "X company was caught dumping contaminates in the water which have devastating ecological and environmental effects. These chemicals are proven to affect genetics and future generations genetics" This part is 100% true... then they go "Know what else they say is genetics? Homosexuality. What this company is doing is dumping chemicals in the water to turn the fucking frogs gay to push the insane agenda that homosexuality is normal in the animal kingdom even though they're forcing them to be gay with chemicals. This is the liberal agenda... THEY WANT TO FEED CHEMICALS TO YOUR KIDS TO MAKE THEM GAY!!".
Bottom line, we knew the government asked companies to take shit down... hell, zuckerberg admitted as much on a podcast with Joe rogan more than 3 months ago.... That doesn't mean gay agenda lizards spraying chemicals through airplane trails is suddenly true.

The problem with government regulation is simple, it allows whoever is in power to directly control (ministry of truth style) everything that social media is allowed to do and who's opinions are allowed to be heard...and not face uneven enforcement of the law for.
Equating regulating freedom of speech to things like manufacturer safety regulations doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
You can point to a problem like the design and function of a car's safety features and objectively say, 'these features need to be standard and always be in working order before leaving the factory'
Free speech is not so obvious due to different people's subjective opinions on what should and should not be allowed, especially when both sides like to move the goal posts on classification on what's harmful/disinformation/hateful ECT.

Social Media, to an extent, does need to be regulated to ensure that nothing nefarious is going on such as the distribution of child pornography, etc. But beyond child pornography and perhaps calls to physical violence, harassment, etc..I believe beyond that what should be regulated gets more complicated and muddy. I personally believe that as long as you're not breaking any laws, people should be able to say what they want and if people don't like it, then they're free to use the tools that exists on the platform to decide who they want to see, what conversations they want to participate in, etc. As long as people have an out, people should be able to say whatever the fuck they want. Just my two cents.
