At first, he looks angry, like "how dare she try and pull attention away". But then you see the evil smile, as if he's just realized "oh hey, another opportunity to put her in her place". Fantastic
Something I love about the original Broadway production is that Natalie talks/ sings to Diana through what I perceive to be a doorway, into Natalie's room. So Diana sings her part "I love you as much as I can" while glancing over her shoulder at Gabe behind her in the room. So cleverly staged.
I perceive it as Diana singing it to Gabe instead of Natalie, and Natalie feels that. So that’s why Gabe is mocking Natalie, mocking her how her mother loves her dead son more than her living daughter.

Sascha Houpt I actually perceive that part as Diana singing to Natalie and when she sings that part Gabe looks happy because she loves him more
I'm not sure you get what I mean. Of course she's singing to Natalie, but the "As much as I can" is because of Gabe.
