😂 Wrong!! The amount paid in road tax is easy smaller than is spent on roads. The reason they abandoned a ring fenced road tax is that it works never raise enough money!
A pothole in Aylesbury caused a spring fracture on the near side front wheel of my car. I only realised the damage it had done when, having driven it home unaware, the spring broke entirely when I set out to drive to a work-related engagement, the day before Christmas Eve. Cost me £200+ something plus my car being towed to a garage to be fixed and kept in there overnight. That was exactly 10 years ago, though.
There are 262300 miles of road in uk. If a pothole occurs every 1 miles, and costs 73£ to repair, it would cost £20mil to repair all potholes. The government gets £7.3billion from road tax per year. Thats 0.3% of the yearly road tax revenue to repair all potholes.
This depends on the repair there are various methods of repair for potholes that people aren't aware of all various in cost some potholes can cost upwards of 200 pounds per square meter to repair depending on the method used, realistically they don't need patch repairs they need re surfacing, patch repairs only last around 18 to 24 months depending on the repair taken place in some cases not even that long.
@@pappydizzle6446that's such a strawman arguement. Even if they resurfaced the area around the potholes and charged £1000 per pothole the total bill is still only around 3.5% of the total car tax revenue. There is absolutely no acceptable reason the roads are as bad as they are, they have more than enough money to do it.
We hit apothole the other day, 2 inch gash in tyre. £200 to get a replacement and 5 hours worth of bullshit. Thanks East Ayrshire Council. We've got roads sliding down a hill into a valley and there has been traffic lights stuck here for at least 5 years. And now another section of road is going the next village over. Utterly useless. The windfarm and logging traffic are destroying it. If farmers were destroying the roads this badly, they would be dragged pillar to post to fix it.
The amount of money the government makes out of Road tax, speeding fines, parking fines and all the rest of it, the roads should be made out of gold in the Uk. 😂😂
It's 600 quid a dented rim for a van doing 40 and hitting a pothole. It's severe head trauma or a broken neck for a biker doing 40 and hitting a pothole. My council tax goes up every year, but so does the number of potholes. Britain is broken.
What did this report teach us that we didn't already know? Potholes are a problem, can damage cars and cost money to repair. Thanks Sky for these unheralded insights. There was I thinking they were probably holes full of pots. Now I know better.
There is THE problem.............councils.................they employ cheap unskilled workers who cant do a proper job if they tried.........Cheap, yes as councils will always use the cheapest contractors around, NOT the best workers, but the cheapest. We have watched them 'attempting' to repair a pothole that has caused several bad accidents, even in rainy weather they walk up to the FLOODED hole, filled the hole with tarmac, heeled it down by foot & moved on !!!!!! 'JOB' completed within 30 seconds, cost to ratepayers £60, ........Within 3 months they are back at the same hole for another botch job & ANOTHER £60........NO ONE FROM THE LACKLUSTRE COUNCIL IS EVER SEEN........So, who is at fault= council !!!
They cannot have thought that a proper, thorough repair, even if costing a bit more, may well last longer and save money and time and prevent hassle and discontent in the longer term. Saving a penny now to spend a pound later,it seems to be the British way.
It's disgraceful the state of the roads have been aloud to get in such bad way why do we pay road tax cause clearly not been spent on the roads birmingham were i deliver around 5 days week have ridiculous amounts of various sizes of pot holes on main roads and have gotten really bad over the past 6 months with no sign of being repaired
We used to have a excellent council team all of this is gone today those who voted for David Cameron because they wanted to be him have a lot to answer for 😊
Councils near me already spend loads of money on tarmac, but instead of using it to fill in potholes the make little piles of it in the road to further damage one's suspension.
Council took my car because I didn't realise my £25 car tax hadn't come out of my account. Couldn't afford to get it back as I was away at the time working so the bill was over £800 that was literally two weeks into the month they managed to find my car and take it. Yet it's been 15years and no one's sorted any of the potholes on the road next time and they've just been getting bigger and bigger... they don't care about something unless this they make money from it
Does anyone remember when the public were conned into supporting the governments austerity measures? Well, pot holes are one of the many consequences of that policy.
It's obvious from even scant research, that councils DO fix potholes. On roads that their councillors and mayors live on, that is. DO YOUR HOMEWORK AND REPORT IT.
Had a pothole in my road that the council filled every year for 5 years and always came back due to the fact that they were filling it during the winter
Pot holes are simply a symptom, the real problem is total lack of maintenance. My road was last resurfaced over thirty years ago, by this I mean tarred and gritted, it seals the road surface from water ingress and hence frost damage. The older road users will remember that every summer tar and gritters would be out in force and caution 'loose chipping signs' would be a common sight. Getting back to the pot holes, a stich in time saves nine is a saying the councils are oblivious to. they come along and if a pot holes falls within their guide lines they fill it, but if the hole adjacent it is not quite that deep they leave it, the result is another dangerous pot hole a few days later.
To marks sky! Highlighting what was news from ten years ago! Funny how we have to have our cars in order but the so called gov don't have to have the road in order? How about insurance with massive profits! Shouldn't a required insurance be around cost not profit?
A truck loaded with pot holes hit a pot hole on the road. As a result, one of the pot holes it was carrying, fell off on the road behind the truck. The driver reversed so he can easily pick it up, but unfortunately the whole truck fell in it and was lost forever...😂😂😂
What happened to the billions of pounds of road tax ? By changing the name doesn't change the fact we're paying to drive on these dangerous roads for what reason ?
Missing tarmac around a manhole cover on a 60mph road which caused the manhole lid to come off caused £1300 damage to my car nearly caused me to come off the road took photos reported to the council found photos on google earth off the same tarmac damage from 2 years prior to be told that the road is inspected monthly and the tarmac damage wasnt an actionable defect so they wouldnt be covering cost of repair. Oh and apparently they drive around a check over 3000miles worth of road a week
I would say though concerning the manhole cover as with 'corporation's' like the water and gas who dig up the roads and pavement's and do not fill or cover their 'handy work' tidy are they not as responsible as well?
If they intend on spending money to employ the same subcontractors they this plan with fix nothing and only serve to line the pockets of the same handful of families who own these subcontractors. These subcontractor companies are the problem. Once again, Labour not even thinking through their own plans. This will be a waste of money. Exactly what we expect from this Starmer Labour government.
They should use low risk prisoners to fox the roads for free in exchange for reduced sentences, instead they reduce sentences anyway and pay ££££££ for a group of men in orange jackets to stand around for hours slowly fixing 1 pot hole at a time
Huge increase in Road tax this April. Here comes net Zero madness , job losses in British car manufacturing and this Country flooded with Chinese electric cars with no import duty.
Road tax should pay for it, but the government are are taking the road tax and paying other services services with them, like their over inflated pensions
Another broken promise by the corrupt slugs in power.Every road in the country should be like a formula 1 track if they spent the money that they steal of the motorists in road tax.And if they repaired them with the material that they made speed bumps with,no problem. They never seem to ware out.
Most garages now got gold time😅to fix all these cars😅really stupid that electrics cars drove on our roads for our money😭mean most of them dont pay road tax and are more havy than normalone....🎉
When we had "car tax" the money was supposed to be spent on the roads. Then we had vehicle excise duty and that money went anywhere EXCEPT the roads.
😂 Wrong!! The amount paid in road tax is easy smaller than is spent on roads. The reason they abandoned a ring fenced road tax is that it works never raise enough money!
All the council does is dribble a bit of tarmac into the pothole that's less than needed. Then the pothole reopens up in a month
My shock snapped off yesterday due to driving over poorly maintained roads-some of the worst I've seen in over 20 years of driving.

If that's they want (and it is), then they can foxtrot oscar.
They will soon as they have got alot bus lanes they will tax us so much won't be able to afford cars
Not just pott holes but uneven pavements , especially those steep hill roads, tree roots coming out slanted, it’s a joke.
Over 50p duty per litre 😢 how many litres per hour in broken Britain 😮

We are ok here in Wales, as we are limited to 20 mph. This is forward planning, as it gives us plenty of time to miss the potholes.
