Important to note - especially if you're an Android user - is that many apps are simply modified browsers, committed to one address. Especially retail apps. I won't get into the relative merits of different browsers, other than to say that - if you're using a shopping app, you're probably using a Chrome browser. Nothing wrong with that, but few apps offer the range of optional settings that browsers do. Cookies being the most important.
And whatever device you're working from these days, it's advisable to assume it has provided that website with a unique identifier based on either a hash of your equipment setup, or something like an IMEI number, or both. Including your location.
Most citizens of this country now walk around all day carrying a device that broadcasts huge amounts of personal data to anyone with the means to pick it up - from the shop they just walked past, to that guy standing by you in the lift. So many users have never spent as much as 5 minutes in their phone settings making sure that the only features switched on are those they need right now.
The internet is great. It's entertaining. It's informative.
It's NOT safe, because it's designed not to be.
A VPN won't sort all those problems. But if you know what you're doing, that (and an effective firewall) might address at least some of them. Beware of free VPNs - it's a very old rule that when anything on the Internet is free, YOU have probably just become the product.

I have had quite a few of them over the years and they always start by asking your name, they do not introduce themselves. I just reply asking them who they are and when they say TV Licence, I just say no thanks and shut the door, that's it. I get letters on a regular basis which are binned immediately. I also refuse to inform them that I do not need a licence, I know some people think it's better to do that but I don't, that is giving them your personal details, something I am not prepared to do. Purchasing a licence on the doorstep in and of itself is not evidence of evasion. The householder may have just decided that they wish to start viewing broadcast tv after they became licensed so their would need to be some other issue such as an admission of guilt.

I answer the door, they ask "is Mr.X there?", I ask them who are they, they would invariably just repeat what they said, and I would ask "But who are you???", they respond "tv licencing" , I then say "have a good day" and then close the door on them.
That is the ONLY conversation you need to have with them, and at no point would that be grounds for warrant being issued, which is rarely issued in any case.
Dont try and be clever and entering into a debate telling them "i dont need to because x reason", once you know who they are, you just shut them down and close the door.
    What happens?
Those TV licence letters keep on coming, but they no longer have your name, merely "The occupier" on them.

I may be wrong on that though as, as I say, I haven't seen iPlayer in years.
However, I'm also dubious that TV licensing (private company) could legally request my internet history from my provider, or even find out who my provider is, or have a reason to in the first place as iPlayer already logs users. I suppose if someone was watching the live stream of GB News via youtube, they'd need a TV license but is someone really going to go through every single youtube link the history says someone has been to to check it's not a TV channel? Mr Woodwards reply is inaccurate (unless it dates from the 1940's!). You can fill your house with hundreds of TV's yet not need a licence.

Exaclty I have 3 but really only one I use, but others are still connected to blu ray dvd etc, and TV licence know that, however as stated u don't have to be an official non licensed adress, just compliant with legislation, which can't really he checked fully, as tv license can't check your Internet usage, so your tv might be compliant but your Internet history might not

@@robtheplod by the legislation Mr Woodwards reply is accurate. The TV licence applies to a "television receiver". A "television receiver" in the legislation is defined as ANY device used or installed for the purpose of watching/recording live tv or using BBC iPlayer. Therefore you can rightly own as many TV sets as you want for any number of reasons without a license, but if you install or use one for the purpose of watching live broadcast TV or iPlayer it becomes a TV receiver and requires a licence.

Firstly...great channel, thanks for all the content, but can you answer this...my daughter moved into a brand new flat on a new housing development, the aerial, being communal, wasn't connected for a number of months to which she said 'it's OK I only watch Netfix etc now anyway'. Consequently she didn't buy a TV licence. But, some time after this I asked if the communal aerial was ever sorted out and she replied 'yes' but I still never watch any live TV, BBC iPlayer etc. Now...if she had a visit from TV licencing and it was evident that 'could' watch live TV etc by simlpy selecting the input from the aerial would this be enough to prosecute even though she genuinly didn't watch live TV, iPlayer etc? To draw a parellel, it seems to me like having my car parked in my private drive with a SORN etc., so not insured, MOT'd etc and being prosecuted for driving it on a public road simply because I could very easilly just pick up the keys and drive it. So, does there need to be undisputable proof of watching live TV etc. or can you be prosecuted merely on the fact that you can just press a few buttons to access live TV etc. even if you never do?

The letters are so intimidating. I know one elderly person who was scared into getting one for 'listening to the wireless'. It's disgusting.

Yes, you used to need a licence for a radio but not for many years and the BBC treat elderly people with contempt.

You are only evading the tv licence (as you but it) if you are watching something you shouldn't be watching, the same as You wouldn't be evading a driving licence if you do not drive.

Let us suppose you have recently purchased a TV and are yet to watch anything, you could purchase a licence on the doorstep and then turn on the set couldn't you. I think that would be a reasonable defence in the circumstances as to why you bought a licence but had not contravened the act in question.

After I moved out of my friends house and I was the one who kept paying for the TV licence they turned up on her door the week after the TV licence finished and then took her details to pay for a new direct debit to get a TV licence, because they were so stupid and can’t tell a difference between a woman and a man they tried by putting my name on the direct debit and tried to take the money out of her account with my name on so the bank bounced it and said get stuffedand because of that TV licence took her to court for having no TV licence.
She won the case because it wasn’t her fault for their stupid mixup of the direct debit, but I think she was lucky with the judge she got in Huddersfield
