My great great great uncle John Beckett passed away on 12th October the first day of 3rd ypres, after being in service for a year. His brother and several others were hit by the same shell in the middle of the menin road on a fatigue party and one other passed away as a result of it. His younger brother was sent back to Australia in 1918 with a minor leg injury. He was 31 years old. After all the time ive spent researching them and war history in general it never ceases to fascinate and stun me
My Grand Grandfather was imprisonend in Russia and when he was liberated he decided to went home to see his homeland again even though he knew he had to fight on the Frontline in France. Lukily the war ended before that.
My Grandfather was a sapper of the 107th C.E.F. ,who was decorated with a Military Medal of bravery for keeping the Graven-stafel road clear on the night of Nov. 9th 1917 in this battle. Thank you for this channel.
My great grandad fought on the British side in WW1 and told a story of paschandaele. They were marching through the battlefield after the battle and saw a british soldier stuck in the mud, they tried to pull him out with men and then horses but the mud was so thick he was stuck and they had to leave him. Hour by hour he sunk more and more into the mud. One day they walked past him again and the mud was up to his belly. They still couldn’t do anything to help him. A few days later they walked past him again and the mud was upto his chin and he was desperately trying to move in the mud and create an opening, but couldn’t do anything. The next time they walked past only the top of his hair was showing and he had drowned in the mud, what a horrible and slow way to die.

Dan Rook Canada wouldn’t be the same without the sacrifices we did during WW1. Our actions during the war, especially Vimy and Paschendale, gave Canada legitimacy and a real place on the world stage not only as a British territory, but as a distinct people. We showed the world that we weren’t depending on the brits anymore. This led to the Westminster Status of 1931 which gave us even more autonomy and then later the return of our constitution in 1982. Furthermore, the 1931 Westminster status didnt only benefit Canada, but also all of important overseas possessions of the British (except India, sadly). All of this because of the men who, being from Canada or any other British dominion, sacrificed their life on the battlefields.
I went to Ypres when I was a student overseas in the UK. I will never forget it. To this day, farmers frequently turn up unexploded munitions and pile them up at the end of their driveways for disposal.
Superdude70 they only lost because Germany started war with Russia , have u ever heard of Dunkirk the whole British army almost got wipped allowing Germany to invade the uk and it’s already taken Europe so Germany wouldn’t fight a war on 2 fronts

And the battle carries on and on

What's the price of a mile?

It's an army on the march
Long way from home
Paying the price in young men's lives
Thousands of feet march to the beat
It's an army in despair
Knee-deep in mud
Stuck in the trench with no way out
Thousands of machineguns
Kept on firing through the night
Mortars blazed and wrecked the scene
Guns in the fields that once were green
Still a deadlock at the front line
Where the soldiers die in mud
Roads and houses since long gone
Still no glory has been won
Know that many men has suffered
Know that many men has died
Six miles of ground has been won
Half a million men are gone
And as the men crawled the general called
And the killing carried on and on

The battle of passchendaele was a one of the battles that showed that the Canadian core was a adequate fighting force
Jaden Clive adequate? Tu détestes le Canada?

Adequate? I would say one of the most elite forces in WW1 by 1917. The Canadian's never lost a battle after 1916: Vimy Ridge, Hill 70, Battle of Lens, the last 100 days
Adequate...Seriously? Have you seen the other battles we did there was nothing adequate about it, they were the shock troopers of British Empire.

He would have been shot long before he drowned.

Tell the world of Paschendale
Relive all that he's been through
Last communion of his soul
Rust your bullets with his tears
Let me tell you 'bout his years
Laying low in a blood filled trench
Kill time 'til my very own death
On my face I can feel the falling rain
Never see my friends again
In the smoke, in the mud and lead
Smell the fear and the feeling of dread
Soon be time to go over the wall
Rapid fire and end of us all
Whistles, shouts and more gun fire
Lifeless bodies hang on barbed wire
Battlefield nothing but a bloody tomb
Be reunited with my dead friends soon
Many soldiers eighteen years
Drown in mud, no more tears
Surely a war no-one can win
Killing time about to begin
Home, far away
From the war, a chance to live again
Home, far away
But the war, no chance to live again
The bodies of ours and our foes
The sea of death it overflows
In no man's land, God only knows
Into jaws of death we go
Crucified as if on a cross
Allied troops they mourn their loss
German war propaganda machine
Such before has never been seen
Swear I heard the angels cry
Pray to god no more may die
So that people know the truth
Tell the tale of Paschendale
Cruelty has a human heart
Every man does play his part
Terror of the men we kill
The human heart is hungry still
I stand my ground for the very last time
Gun is ready as I stand in line
Nervous wait for the whistle to blow
Rush of blood and over we go
Blood is falling like the rain
Its crimson cloak unveils again
The sound of guns can't hide their shame
And so we die on Paschendale
Dodging shrapnel and barbed wire
Running straight at cannon fire
Running blind as I hold my breath
Say a prayer symphony of death
As we charge the enemy lines
A burst of fire and we go down
I choke a cry but no-one hears
Feel the blood go down my throat
Home, far away
From the war, a chance to live again
Home, far away
But the war, no chance to live again
Home, far away
From the war, a chance to live again
Home, far away
But the war, no chance to live again
See my spirit on the wind
Across the lines, beyond the hill
Friend and foe will meet again
Those who died at Paschendale
The battle of passchendaele showed the first real proof that the tank could be used effectively on the battlefield and be used to break the stalemate of the western front and forever ensured the tank core would live on to bring the allies to victory "From mud, through blood to the green fields beyond"

One of the battles that shaped the country of Canada! Can you do a video on Vimy ridge?
Martin M : a country shouldn’t be born or shaped from battles
@@danrook5757 Interesting Dan. You mean morally? Aren't almost all countries 'born or shaped from battles'?
@@danrook5757 Well Martin M had no idea what he was talking about.
