- Classic Game Room presents a CGRundertow review of Ridge Racer 3D from Namco Bandi for the Nintendo 3DS. The latest entry in the popular Ridge Racer series, Ridge Racer 3D is built on a satisfying Grand Prix tour that progresses at just the right difficulty. Its more succinct complementary modes are just as good, and across all the game's modes, Ridge Racer 3D uses a credits system that allows you to unlock new content. The fact that your racing efforts consistently amount to something gives you the incentive to keep playing, especially for your bite-size handheld gaming doses. Ridge Racer 3D also supports four-player local play and even uses the 3DS's StreetPass feature. If you walk by someone with Ridge Racer 3D, your 3DS can download their ghosts and let you race against them the next time you play. I've casually watched CGR and CGR Undertow for maybe a decade or so and I think this is the first thoroughly positive review I've run into from this particular reviewer lmao
really wish they made a new one for current-gen
they actually did quite an effort with this, new cars and tracks and even soundtracks
Got a 3ds for Christmas in 2012 along with this game with it for free and it is fun!
I had no idea RR was on 3ds.......Hell most of the stuff on that console gets unnoticed, stores only sell games like like one week and then they make room for the next. It's sad.

I just got this on my new 3ds xl for $3. I love this game! I had it on my first 3ds console but the new 3ds face tracking 3d is awesome with this game. No more double images.

I purchased this game after seeing Kwing 's review on UA-cam,e. So far I have more that 65 hours in Ridge Racer 4D. It's one of the best racing games I have played, and the 3D effect is amazing.
Great game, horrible review. Stop generalizing Nintendo fans like that. You should quit reviewing games.

I like the one button drift feature in this game. Although in an article the developer claims it was added as a beginner control scheme. This actually works like the drift mechanism in Mario Kart (but without turbo boost), and ironically being more realistic than the classic Ridge Racer drifting.
I'm curious as to how this game handles its cars. I was a very, *very big fan* of Ridge Racer Type 4 for the PSX, and I loved how the cars handled on that game. Granted, some tricks need practice, especially since different cars demand different handling skills from the player. Like, for example, with drift cars, it all boils down to controlling the drift so you can aggressively take corners, but with grip cars you need to actually reduce speed to take corners using controlled brake bursts.
If this game handles like R4, I'm getting this game.

I came here, in 2019, looking for the answer to my question, how good is this RR compared to R4? The only truly amazing Ridge Racer ever made. needless to say how disappointed I am to still not have the answer to that question =(
I don't know how to compare it though. RR 3D feels more like the RRs games from Playstation Portable where you can follow other cars to get slip streaming speed bonus. The car physics are a little bit more realistic than the other games as the auto steer during drifting isn't that obvious. (in comparison RR7 is just down right stupid with that realistic graphic but the cars don't feel like cars at all.) The game really isn't shiny as the franchise has fallen for years, but it is already the cloest experience to the golden ages of RR, among the newest titles.

No, but seriously, Ridge Racer 3D isn't that good looking in 2D. You should check out the other 3DS games before you judge the graphics of the system.

I was obsessed with this game. I beat all but 4 races and never could make it through them. I tried and tried and tried with no luck. It's an awesome game, though. It's amazing.

Speaking of pictures, I'm kinda disappointed that Star Fox 64 3D has no online. Ya looking at people's faces is cool and all but if I have to choose between that or online, I rather go with online.

@PsychedelicHeavy I think it's just a specialised taste. I'd consider myself a Nintendo fan but I'm a fan of Valve and old some old Konami games. I do consider myself slightly picky but not to the extent of hating other games. I like CoD and I've had some good times playing it, but I'd never buy it for myself. I don't think I know anyone who just likes Nintendo games...

well the nitro system is kinda cool though in this game. it really adds something good to the game

@Anemite The 3ds nor vita have been pushed to their full capabilities yet, No console ever has been pushed to their true capabilities so fast, Look at games like gta 4 and now look at gta 5 or forza 2 vs forza 4. developers have said the shading and lighting capabilities on 3ds are almost as good as that of a 360 or ps3, this is why I say this game could have atleast looked like a early 360 game, the 3ds is FULLY capable of forza 2 graphics

I don't understand why this would get shit or why nintendo fans would give it shit. As a nintendo boy I absolutely adore namco and ridgeracer has always been something I enjoyed. They mixed back in 2000 with RR64 so I don't see a problem with them mixing all these years later.

Yeah, it has more to do with Nintendo fans not liking Ridge Racer, and not the fact that everyone and their dog realized that this Ridge Racer is nothing more than a cheap cash in for the launch. Especially since most Nintendo fans and 3DS owners have probably played Ridge Racer on some plattform before and know that this game is trash. The game is a shoddy launch game that doesn't use the system in any meaningfull way.
Lemme tell you this, The original xbox, when uses at it's full potential( splinter cell chaos theory) looks pretty darn close to a early 360 game, and the 3ds has already been proven to have a GPU that has better lighting and shader capabilities than the original xbox and wii(both are around the same power) so what this means if the 3ds were pushed to 100 percent WITHOUT using 3d effect(it hogs up processor) it could look extremely close to forza 2 on the 360, or even a bit better

i have this game and for some reason this game reminds me of ridge racer 7....
just want to say im a big nintendo fanboy and though it is true that i play alot of 3rd party games and i love playing on halo on the xbox Battlefield 3 is going to be amazing, but if there is an type of game where i just dont care about if its not a nintendo game is a racing game last time i brought a 3rd party racing game was for the n64 ( formula 1 - amazing game, i hear its bad these days but i don't belive them), so im so terrible at 3rd party racing game when i go to friend, they alway -

Believe me I am far far far far from someone who thinks graphics make a game any better or really cares all that much but COME ON, the 3ds is MUCH more powerful than the psp, This game should have looked like a xbox 360 game, the psp version pretty much maxed out the psp's gpu with realistic lighting and reflections and awesome car models so the 3ds version should look like a 360 game, this is soooo BS, but it's still a fun game
I have this game its great but the lack of online multiplayer kinda pisses me off
I disagree how you say a game like this can't succeed on nintendo's platform, the only thing keeping me from buying it are the lack of new tracks and the lack of online, I just don't feel like its a big upgrade from the game I got at the DS launch.

Ridge Racer is not one of the best I got considering i only 3 3DS game cards and 1DS game card. I bought the the game Ridge Racer for Fun and also wanting to prove my theory if i would like a racing game when I more interested in platforming and RPG. Ridge Racer did not satisfy me in my hunger for enjoyment. For some time now, when I play the game, I would likely to feel sleepy maybe because I'm not just used to racing just yet or maybe the game has low replay value.

@PerfectBlade20 look at the graphic specs, never neither of the portables will reach the graphics of console games right now, so far RE:R is the only 3DS game that has shown better graphics than any psp game and yet is blocky some times, as for the vita, they can reach the graphics of some first gen games

@PerfectBlade20 u are exagerating too much, the 3DS will NEVER reach xbox/ps3 graphics, the vita can barely do it, the 3DS is indeed better in graphics than psp by not by a long margin, is like comparing the xbox and gcn, but anyway, i agreed with u, RR for psp has better graphics than this game, but at least this is a full game, unlike the vita version which is a demo version that cost $30

The voice sucks, 'ooooo good slipstreaming'. I've turned it off, its like she's on drugs. Its a good game but the graphics did shock me when I've been playing the psp versions aswell that look so much more stylish. Still, this game has some nice textures and the 3d effects like water and leaves are nice touches. You really do feel like you're whizzing round Ridge City through that small window.
