  • As part of our partnership with The 125 Group we were privileged to join the crew in the cab of Prototype HST No. 41001 for a ride along the wonderful Great Central Railway (North) Line from Ruddington Fields to Loughborough.
As part of the partnership we are supporting The 125 Group with their #Depot125 appeal, with the aim to build a diesel maintenance facility at Ruddington, GCR(N)'s operating base, which will provide a secure facility to enable The 125 Group to continue maintenance of their existing fleet and a restoration home for production HST power cars which they aim to acquire in the future. The 125 Group needs to raise £100,000 to allow the development to proceed, they seek donations from individuals and corporate sponsors for this exciting project.
All the information you need on this project and the all important donation info can be found on the 125 Group's website at,
    www.125group.org.uk/depot/
This first video features footage shot from inside the cab, where you will hear quite a different sound to what you do from the lineside. A second video that we streamed LIVE on our Facebook page, featuring an externally mounted microphone to capture that wonderful HST sound, will also be uploaded here on UA-cam.
We would like to extend our thanks to The 125 Group for the wonderful hospitality on the day and excellent coverage by their social media team to help promote what was a very quickly arranged live event.

As a child, I remember the first intercity 125’s in BR livery. I’d always loved trains and lived on a hill where a line ran in the distance so I’d beg my dad to lend me his binoculars and I’d sit upto the windowsill on a stepstool in our lounge for hours on end. Such was I addicted to all trains that before the 125’s my parents would take my sister and I for trips to the station with a platform ticket. I bought my boys up with trains as did my sister with my nephews. They’re all adults now and I hadn’t realised just how old I am, as to that 125’s will be in a museum now. I went to Ruddington in the 90’s. We rode on an open topped bus and saw huge carp in the lake on the country park and whilst I remember crossing a footbridge over the track, I don’t understand why I have no recollection of the trains there. Anyway, as a child, I loved the 125, I cut pictures out of magazines, bought others for posters, I had a model one and a postcard which I still have. During my childrens childhoods it was 125’s in midland mainline livery which we used to go to Attenborough to watch them. It took me right until 2000 to finally travel by virgin 125 from Chesterfield to York and we had to stand most of the journey. I loved it though and decided I wanted to be a concierge on them but then my marriage fell apart and I moved 70 miles away to where it’s all cruddy electric trains. My kids hated it that there weren’t decent trains here. I’ve to this day, at almost 48 years old only travelled on that Virgin 125 18 years ago. I will look into another visit to Ruddington. I’d love to travel on a train pulled by one. I’m sadly in a wheelchair these days so boarding and alighting isn’t easy, but where there’s a will there’s a way and I definitely have the will!

There's a typo in the rolling caption at approx .27 sec. Guess it's a bit too late now?
