      Fingers crossed… are you hoping to do “For Men” as well in the future?
      In the meantime, both You & Vilk, continue to both stat safe and take good care of care on your upcoming “Arctic Adventure”

    Hi, do not forget that that you need " winter diesel" when travel in Sweden in wintertime. It is special so it will not freeze in the fueltank and lines. My suggestion is that you dont arrive with full tank and jerrycan so you can fill up in Sweden.Normal diesel becomes like a stearincandle if it is very cold. Have a good day and an even better one tomorrow. Snowchaines is agood idea.

    I am a 50 year old Texan who ate as many meals as i could with my grandparents. I traveled a lot from my mid 20's until mid 40's when i settled back here to care for them, and my mother (dementia). Beyond the comfort family can bring, there is so much knowledge in the older generations many people dont hear until it is too late. Happy travels, safe journeys, and may the light of the world shine upon your smiling face Eva!!!

      I know what your going through. I say that with love. I took care of my mom who had dementia after my dad passed away suddenly. 7 1/2 years later she passed as well. I was a mill worker, not a caregiver. The learning curve was very steep. It was the single most difficult thing I ever did, yet I would not trade a minute of it for anything. My mom took me in as an infant even though she did not have to. She loved me and saw to my every need. In her time of need I did the same for her. God bless you in what you are doing. I am now writing a book about the lessons I learned in the hope that it will help others who care for their parents in a situation they never dreamed they would be in.

    Good old Pajak sleepingbag. Poland has a few outstanding manufacturers for outdoor equipment.
    It might come handy to purchase a radiator cover for your Defender and to change the water/anti-freeze mix to pure a antifreeze cocktail. Had some first-hand experience in the past with LandRovers and their habit to not getting on working temperature. Good luck and safe travels. Have fun

  • @TacticalNorwegian
    @TacticalNorwegian 4 місяці тому +30

    Hi Eva! It looks like there is still some stuff that you will need for driving in Scandinavia. First of all you need to fill up with winter diesel that can handle the temperatures (Regular diesel on pumps in Sweden and Norway), and always try to keep your fuel close to full, but in case your diesel particle filter gums up you should have an extra one on hand. I would also highly recommend you get some studded winter tires (Nokian Hakkapelita is a good choice) there is a lot of ice on the roads this year. 4-8 ice chains would also be smart to have, the road you are taking up to Nordkapp is not the easiest place to get roadside assistance, so keep that in mind and stay safe.
    Can't wait to follow your journey! :)

    • @jdjdjdj29929292
      @jdjdjdj29929292 4 місяці тому +6

      You are thinking about the fuel filter, and not the DPF. A car of this age do normally not have a DPF.
      What could be important, is the correct engine oil for lower temperatures. That said, if the engine heater is used, it should not be a larger issue.

    • @TacticalNorwegian
      @TacticalNorwegian 4 місяці тому +2

      @@jdjdjdj29929292 You are absolutely correct, I automatically went to DPF when i thought about diesel vehicles.

    This video is exactly like the latest few videos with Maria and her Aussie dog Blue at Roaming Reckless currently in Alaska. 😊. She also travels around in the same car as Eva (she calls her Defender Poe) and she’s currently in Alaska and her car was not winterized at all at first. She was sleeping in her Defender at -30 F without a diesel heater, her followers went nuts trying to lecture her into getting her Defender winterized (she finally did and was really living up to the reckless name in her channel). I’m glad Eva is not underestimating Arctic circle winter! Vilk’s energy reminds me a lot of Blue’s too. What an adventure!

  • @ReyOfLight
    @ReyOfLight 4 місяці тому +7

    Being Swedish and having traveled a lot in the north in childhood, including a few trips to Northcape, northern Scandinavia isn't as off the grid as many people seem to think. Unlike Alaska or northern Canada, you're never really super far away from civilization, and mobile phone signals are generally existing and even pretty good these days (was way different last time I went north, in 2003, then only really Telia was an option, other companies that didn't have state support, weren't as developed at the time with having country wide coverage) and a lot of the time, calling the emergency number 112 will work even if there's little or no regular phone signal. I'd say the most important is to ensure you always have battery in your phone and means to charge it, in case you do happen to have car issues between towns, and in wintertime, it's always smart to have something to keep you warm in case your car breaks down and you don't have heating, and this doesn't just involve expeditions but is good even if just commuting to work out of town or something similar. Candles, lighter/matches, blanket and some light snacks and something to drink is something that is generally recommended for wintertime road trips, especially in the north where help could be a bit further away than down here in the more densely populated south (I'm close to Gothenburg), but it's still nothing like Alaska or Canada where help could be days away by land.
    I'd say the biggest concern is the risk of frostbite of exposed parts of your body at night if it gets very cold in the tent on your car. And also make sure Vilk stays warm and safe as dogs can get frostbite as well if they're not used to extreme cold.
    Finnmarksvidda in Norway may just be the most "middle of nowhere" that you may encounter, and that's if you go to Norway via Finland from Karesuando in Sweden, and that is the most direct route to Northcape from Sweden. Going on the E10 towards Narvik or even going via Kilpisjärvi to Skibotn is much further if Northcape is the destination. Definitely make sure you don't run out of diesel up there, sometimes it can be quite some distance between gasstations up there, especially if you're going over Finnmarksvidda, there's also a good chance that you'll have to wait for the plowtruck to escort you over Finnmarksvidda together with other vehicles wishing to get through the area. Proper winter tires (not the "all year" tires) are a must up there in winter, and I'd even suggest bringing snow chains just in case not even proper winter tires are enough, even though snow chains are rarely needed they can save you if you come across situations where they are needed.
    All that said, all my journeys north have been in summertime so I've not needed to worry about winter conditions (have experienced some snowfall in July though, at the campsite in Björkliden, but it was very brief)

    Minus 20 is not very cold in the nothern part of Sweden.
    Minus 35 is when the train service is terminated since you can not rescue passengers at that temperature with road transport.
    Travelling in extreame cold in Sweden requires very good preparations och foresight. On the good side - there very few mosquitos. :-)
    Also mobile service can be sketchy on some places.

    Birger from western Norway here. I will strongly recommend that you use steel studded NOKIAN Hakkapeliitta tires. The narrower the better. 235 85 16 will be a good size for your Defender. I have the same car, a Defender Td5 110 2006 and running studded tires in winter is a must in Norway and Sweden. Snow chains is a good idea to bring in the car. Also a jump starter. Large Snow shoes and /or Mountain skiis with skins and ski poles will be a must if hiking in the wild with a sled. You are going to love this trip. Welcome

    One tip, when you drive in Norway (don´t know about Sweden), don´t use your phone and drive (unless phone is mounted in "designated area") or you can get billed by police by nearly 10.000 NOK, which is quite a painful cost. Also, speeding in Norway, about 28km/h more than allowed road speed, causes loosing a driving license (random police controls or the photo boxes). Pretty strict rules, but make for safe driving conditions. So might be good to know :)

      Same in Sweden.
      The current fine for using a hand-held device while driving in Sweden is 1,500 SEK (approximately €145 or $170).

    I did a similar route by car to Nordcap 2 years ago with my mates - except we went through Lapland and not through Sweden. Nice adventure, although it's not so scary as it may seem ;) We are going the same route at the beginning of March so maybe we will meet somewhere in the far north! Powodzenia Ewcia ;)

    Good to see the adventures continue on a new / old continent. I’m sorry your dream of moving to the US didn’t pan out, but, if it’s any solace, my American dream of moving to Sweden didn’t either. Be thankful that you’re in a country that actually cares for its citizens with a good healthcare system.

    Cold is annoying, but deadly as well :-D Welcome to the north of the Nordic countries:-) I've only experienced -42, or was it -47? It was cold, and you can't make snowballs, that's no fun... And you can't too much at all...
    But if you want an adventure, come to Hälsingland! There's always a place for you at our house, as long as you share a polish recipe... We already make a great bigos.

    The exterior lighting on Odyssey is very limited. Although you usually set up camp well before dusk, perhaps you may need to move / be outside after dark. A couple of roof rack mounted driving lights and some LED floodlights to the sides would be good to have when you have to move around outside. The most important item are the proper winter studded tyres. Do you have a winch?Safe travels!
