From what I recall there were many of these video game championships held back in the '90 all across various stores and places in various states across the US. The one where you won as a kid was held in Orlando and the 1 where DrDisrespect won 1 of the 2 tournaments as a kid was held in Marine World California Vallejo.(Nowadays know as Six Flags)
Yeah, even in the video the announcer mentions that the winner will go on to yet another tournament in San Francisco, meaning there would be others like this one going on everywhere. This one was in Florida.
What is funny is that back in the day all these tourneys were called “world championships” but there were no foreign competitors and there were so many of them they were mostly regionalized. Meaning it wasn’t even a national tournament to begin with even though you would end up with “world champion” in the title. Even Nintendo held tourneys like this in the 90s for Americans only. It was a different time. In many tourneys kids were playing the game for the first time.
I’m pretty sure doc says he won because it’s his character, ‘Dr Disrespect’ , the character won it, because that’s what his character did, however he actually didn’t. pretty much an alternate reality in which doc has a city based off him with him being ‘set up in his arena’. Won the store championship in Baltimore MD, they played over 3 weeks. Sonic, NBA Jam and Virtua Racer on the Sega. States was held at a sports/arcade complex called Sports. Almost got kicked out of the place because a friend drove a golf ball instead of putting it on put-put.
I was the Southwestern Ontario Champion here in Canada and was in the final four at the World Championship. I have a video on my channel of the trophy that we took home for being the Canadian champions. I also have a one hour recording from the finals in Fort Lauderdale that I will have to convert over to digital
