  • This is a tour of a new car we just dragged home - a 1976 Dodge Coronet ex-CHP car. This is a pretty special vehicle, a U Code 440 HP car with all the heavy duty cop stuff. This is a basic run down of what the car is and what we plan on doing. Runs and drives but will need fuel system sorted and new brakes all around. Look forward to getting this one road worthy.

    I purchased a 73 satellite 4 door ex Colorado Highway Patrol car in 82 at auction. It was 400 4 Barrell equipped with goodies. There were 5 for sale that day and 2 "parts" cars that were 440 powered. The 440 cars blew up during pursuit and not deemed worthy of repair. The trooper told me 400 cars were preferred in B and C body cars due to repeated 440 failures. So, in fact, I did see a factory 440 patrol car from Chrysler built in 73. Special order??? Great report!

    Dart or Valiant A38 with a 360...that would be a keeper, too. For those who don't know, the fuel pump body is special on the cop cars. The upper section is more narrow to allow the oil cooler return, which is basically a hollow bolt, to go in at the rear bolt location on the timing cover/fuel pump anchor location. To have one rebuild using modern materials (ethanol kills the old diaphragms) is about $200

    Our Drivers Ed was an unmarked state police car. It was a smooth riding car. Students in my class had a pool for whoever could get the highest speed before the instructor noticed. I got up to 72 in a 55, I think the pool was taken by 78.

    Interesting that the state of California re painted the cars before they were sold. Here in Michigan, years ago but not anymore, if you bought one of our state police cars the buyer was responsible for having it re painted within a stipulated time frame, at their expense.

      Open rear - they didn’t trust cops with sure grips, too easy to spin the car and not like they needed it for snow traction in California.

    • @johneckert1365
      @johneckert1365 10 місяців тому

      The 100amp alternator uses the same voltage regulator. Those Chrysler regulators are very universal and simple, can be used with pretty much any externaly regulated alternator.

    • @Ross046
      @Ross046 10 місяців тому

      @@johneckert1365 they made a different VR for the high amp alternators. The only visual difference is they are little thicker. Good luck finding one.

    • @johneckert1365
      @johneckert1365 10 місяців тому

      @Ross046 I was once told that cars with rear defrost came with the big alternator. I remember as a kid my Mom's 76 Cordoba had one. I had a Dodge wrecker with the big alternator too, but that's just because it was already on the donor 440 from a New Yorker.

    • @Ross046
      @Ross046 10 місяців тому

      @@johneckert1365 Had a W200 Crewcab that came out of Fire service. Had a 140 amp Motorola alternator. That had a very different VR. I swapped out that mess for the regular 100 amp alternator system(on a 440). Kept melting down stock VR's. That's when I found out about Mopar HD regulators. Even my starter/alternator guy didn't know. All the books/computers only showed the one. It was probably 20 years ago. I'd have to dig deep in my memory and parts stash to come up with a number.

    • @johneckert1365
      @johneckert1365 10 місяців тому

      @Ross046 Wow that's crazy. I'm a Dodge guy and a junkyard guy and never heard of the HD VR. I have a stock 78 New Yorker at my yard with big alternator, I should go look at the VR just for fun. Chances are it was replaced with a standard one.

    I don't know where you got your information that it was illegal to sell a black and white car in California, but you are wrong, They were sold all the time at police auctions in black and white with just the decals and equipment removed, and many times, you could still make out the outline of the original agency across the trunk as all they did was remove the gold lettering. Also, even if that were true, they would have just shot the roof and doors black and called it good, they sure as hell would not have changed the color of the car and even painted the inside of the door jambs. Law enforcement agencies did not put a lot of money into turning these things over as 90% of them were sold to cab companies and security outfits anyway and they were sold on the cheap. They would leave it to the buyer to repaint the car, and most that were repainted ended up going to someplace like Earl Scheib or Miracle for a cheap paint job. After a few years as a taxi or security company vehicle, they would then hit the wrecking yard.
    I don't think that you have a CHP car either. Given that the door jambs are painted and the green color of the car, I'm guessing it was ordered by a Sheriff's Dept or possibly have been a detective's car for a PD. As for production, of course you would schedule them all at the same time in a special run, as it would make no sense to have interspersed these in regular production, especially when such a large percentage of these became cop cars anyways.
