KLM review: Boeing 777 economy comfort experience to Dubai

- In this weeks review I finally fly with one of my favourite airlines, KLM long haul as I travel in economy comfort from Amsterdam to Dubai on the Boeing 777.
The Netherlands national airline has been a favourite of mine for a long time and I have had some fantastic short haul flights. But what can you expect when flying with KLM long haul? Well in this video I will share with you my first KLM long haul flight as I travel from their home airport of Amsterdam to Dubai. This flight was initially booked on the Boeing 787-10 but a late aircraft change meant that I would experience the Boeing 777-200 instead but regardless, I was excited. I also decided to upgrade my economy seat to economy comfort. Is the extra money worth it? As always I will share my final thoughts at the end of the review.

**For some reason I forgot to mention the price in the video of the flight. This was booked as part of a return trip. Birmingham - Amsterdam - Dubai - Paris - Birmingham. The price for all 4 flights? Just £359 / €428 which is good value in my opinion.**

Looking forward
I flew KLM transAtlantic in Business a couple of years ago (2018) (AMS-JFK). We were returning from our honeymoon cruising the Adriatic. We both agree that it was the best transAtlantic flight we've taken. So I'm saddened that the Premium Economy on this flight wasn't up to snuff.
We'll be back for a proper visit to Amsterdam in September and actually will take some vacation time away to get to Schipol earlier as we had no time to do so in 2018.

Thanks Brendan. To be clear, KLM do not offer premium economy (yet). Economy comfort is just extra legroom and for the price difference is superb. I love Amsterdam and I am sure you will have a great time.

Another great video Blake. The good thing about you is that you say what you see on the individual flight and even though KLM is your favourite Airline you as normal are objective and honest..... A lot of youtube ppl could learn a lot from your format and final thoughts

awesome trip report, beautiful view of the engine. The IFE was so modern despite the aircraft's ages

Thanks for another well-considered review Blake. While satisfactory, I too got the feeling that the flight was not all it could have been. Usually KLM cabin crew are one of its consistently strong points. Looking forward to the next flight of this journey!
It was still a good flight, maybe my expectations were too high. Had the crew have been more present (and that Pizza been nice) I would have had nothing negative to say at all.

Appreciate your feedback as always. I am sure the 787 would have been superb but apart from the patchy service this was not bad at all.
I enjoy KLM and have always found the service to be quite good. The only negative is the food is not great, even in business class. I also have had an aircraft change from the 787 to 777.
The first meal was delicious in my opinion and much better than I expected, sadly the second meal was a let down. That being said an increasing number of airlines nowadays seem to treat the pre arrival snack as an afterthought.

Being Dutch myself I can only agree to your comments about the airport Schiphol, which btw is pronounced with the typical Dutch G-sound which with you scrape your throat. Other European airports are boring, to say the least. Once had a 6 hour stop in Brussels where the lights just went off and it was dark, shops were not there, there was absolutely nothing.
It has been years that I used KLM mainly because of what you said at the end of the video: the crew is never there. When I flew KLM to Jakarta (overnight flight obviously) you never see a member of the cabin crew. I like to use Asian airlines where the (pretty) girls regularly walk through the cabin asking passengers who are having trouble sleeping if they like a drink or a snack. I know it is not good for Dutch economy but KLM really has to change the way the crew operates, then things will be better for the airline.
It wouldn’t put me off flying KLM long haul again, I have been told that in general the crew are great. My short haul flights have always been very good.

Hey! Great video, I am flying to South Africa in a week with economy comfort as well, and I was wondering if the wall power outlet was any good? Do your devices charge at a normal rate? And do you need an adapter for either the wall outlet, or the entertainment system? I remember you always needed those weird headphone jack adapters in aircraft, is that still a thing or do normal headphone jacks work now?
You can usually charge devices via USB or standard plug depending on the aircraft and seat. Have a great trip!

Great video; sometimes you tell us how much your flights cost, and some times you don’t, is there a reason? Extra legroom price looks like a good deal though.
No specific reason, it depends how much other information I want to put in to the video. If you are interested this booking for BHX-AMS-DXB-CDG-BHX cost £359 plus the seat selection.
Love your vids, the reason there are no drink runs anymore is because they reduced one flight attendant on longhaul, pax are always welcome to the galley for a drink and a snack. I know pax can’t be the victim of it but it’s an agreement between the airline and the union. 😕

Yep, just stretch your legs and wander to the galley - it's one of the things I like about KLM! Also the service depends on the length of flight, more than one drinks service on South African routes for example...
Hey Blake, really enjoyed this week’s instalment! Such a shame the aircraft was swapped out for a 777-200 but as you say, you got to fly one of your favourite airlines longhaul. That Economy comfort looked well worth the extra 💷, even if just to be closer to that GE90. Look forward to the rest of your ME trip in the coming weeks
Hi Lee! I will admit that I was pretty sad when the aircraft was changed from the 787 which I am sure would have been spectacular. As you say though, any flight sitting next to a GE90 is a good one in my book.

A bit of a mixed bag here, a lovely meal and nice seat but the cabin looked dated and to serve a pizza like that is unacceptable in any class.KL's long haul eco product is certainly not amongst the best in Europe
Thanks for watching. Personally I think that European airlines as a whole have been surpassed when it comes to the economy experience. I certainly don't think that KLM are bad at all though and would put them on a par with my Lufthansa experience in November.
Hey man! We are travelling long haul with KLM. We bought Economy. We have the option to buy Economy comfort (more than 100 USD each sit)... in your opinion, is it really worth? Do you recommend it?
Personally I would go for economy comfort every time. Although the standard seats are perfectly fine the extra space on long haul makes a difference.
I remember before they had snack box in the galley do they have still ? and fly AIRFRANCE their service is better but they cut from service too before they had drink and snack before meal but they cut it !
I did not visit the galley on this flight but I am sure there were drinks available back there at least. I was booked to fly back with Air France and the economy product looked great but I changed my schedule and flew Qatar Airways instead. I think I made the right decision!
I have always found Amsterdam Schiphol airport a very easy airport to navigate.

i have a question as I am going to Banglore(India)from frankfurt but I have to transit in amsterdam and layover in amsterdam for 15 hours so do I need a visa or something
Sorry for the late reply. If you are planning to leave the airport you will need to follow entry requirements for the country. Depending on your nationality this may mean a visa. You should check with the airline before travel.

I'd rather that than leg room and debating whether to upgrade to a comfort seat
I rarely use recline in economy class as it impacts the space of the passenger behind. Being relatively tall I know full well how uncomfortable it can be on a long haul flight when the person in front reclines. Its every passengers right but not something I tend to do.

No they don’t. If you wish to sit in economy comfort you will still have to pay for the seat.
Air France codesharing flight and was it a Delta codesharing flight to?
Not that I can remember but I can't be certain.
This shows just how much better KLM is than BA, Lufthansa, Iberia, Swiss and Austrian. IMO
Having not flown long haul with all of the airlines you mentioned I can't really say who is best. I would say that I enjoy flying with KLM but long haul Lufthansa was equally as good in my experience.
The plastic cutlery is re-washable. They save it and clean it. Saves weight, and apparently better for the enviroment as well xD
Good point. I was aware of why the cutlery is used but personally I prefer metal cutlery.

what was the seat number? the turbine noise is loud?
The seat number is in the description. For this flight it was 12K and no the noise was not particularly loud during flight.
The should have kept economy comfort in a 3-3-3 configuration, it's far to narrow to be described as comfort!
That would be wonderful but the modern philosophy for airlines is cram more seats in for more revenue unfortunately.

Fantastic, as always! Not sure I would have been to handle an aircraft swap from the 787-10 to 777-200 as well as you did 😂 Nonetheless, while it looks like a really nice economy seat - that service sure is disappointing.
It was much more painful then I let on in the video when I saw the change but flying is always fun.

It’s not on a par with the likes of Emirates but it was certainly as good as any European airline I have tried recently.
Great video Blake! I don't like to fly with KLM at all, I think it's such an overrated airline, yes, the service is really nice and the crew is very nice, but I feel like their hard product it's quite outdated in comparison with another similar airlines.

How big was the screen and just how much leg room 32 33. Please pay attention and make your reviews complete. Viewers are looking for the comfort and quality of acccommodations first and foremost as detailed as possible, shots of runway and clouds are not of interest to me and a lot of unnecessary music

Triple 7 is nothing special, I prefer Airbus A350, better than787 dreamliner

Top notch review Blake and definitely an airline I’ll be using a lot more now I can use my Virgin miles with them - I may even double HUY’s annual passenger count with me being the other person who uses it
Funnily enough I am considering combining a visit to see the sister and a flight from HUY at some point.
My KLM sectors are HUY-AMS-OSL in May to meet the QR flight - last time I flew KLM from HUY they were flying the Fokker 50! Let me know if you get something sorted..be good to meet up
why do you start off with food rathe than telling us about the seats and the space. That is mainly what we want to know, the comfort level for God's sake

nice video but...KLM economy comfort is very disappointing i my opinion, comparing to Air France (separate cabin, better seats en much better catering). KLM should improve rapidly being competitive....
That’s not a like for like comparison. Air France offer a full premium economy product and KLM do not. Economy comfort is simply extra space for a relatively small fee.
I’ll take Economy comfort any day because the 10 abreast economy is too cramped. I can upgrade to Premium Economy more thanks to my hard earned Frequent flyer miles
As I said in the review, I am glad that I paid for the comfort seat but economy did not look too bad. Some airlines do 10 abreast economy quite well in my experience.

Ah yes that it is though my home is on the shore line of the Gulf of Mexico which is midway down the west coast of the Florida peninsula thus I am on the west coast of the state while being on the east coast of America
KLM deleted my baggage claim incident and never responded to me. I am never flying with them ever again.
It is difficult as a 19 year old flying alone for the first time. My computer was destroyed and my baggage was soaking wet after being left in the rainstorm outside in Vienna.
I urge you to save your time, frustration, and money and never fly KLM.

As is the case in all of my reviews I did give a seat tour and highlighted the seat pitch. There are chapters to help you find what you are looking for. The seat detail begins at 07:18.
If you compare this class with other airlines, than klm is the worse of most airlines.
Hmm, I viewed it as basically an extra legroom seat and it certainly does not claim to be a higher tier than standard economy. Based on my experience I was impressed.
