2:53:00 Reid there was actually a way to guarantee not dying to double removal. you main phase 1 field of ruin one of the two red open mana lands, even if they have an island left they only have 1 red mana up. that leaves you with the land you get of field of ruin with 5 mana up, enough for a 1 mana shark plus veto.
@@RMGringo2122 then you lose either way at least you try lol don't understand this argument. most list don't run the mountain, even if they do there is no disadvantage in trying that play to get an edge
He could have also YOLO'd a March of Otherworldly Light off the top if he cycled shark typhoon for 1 instead of double activate anchorage. NVM... he only has 1 in the deck and he used it on the land earlier in the game...
Atog!!! Used to think that pauper was a boring format, that the "power" of the format was insanely exagareted. These were my thoughts never having played the format. I was a modern affinity player and this kid in my community was currently looking to trade for pauper affinity cards, having a mainly proxied up deck thus far. This was back in the day before the Mox Opal ban, and when the kid asked to play pauper affinity against my modern affinity deck, i thought he would have no chance whatsoever... I went 0-5, maybe 1-4 against this kid, even with mox starts and everything i just couldn't handle Atog-swing+fling out of nowhere. I was honestly baffled at this time, and went home to research the pauper format the very same night. Today i have sold a big chunk of my modern deck, but i kept the Commons. I dont have a modern deck, and i have no intentions of getting back into it. I think its really interesting to hear you talk about the identity of a format, never thought of it like that at all. Modern lost very much of its cool and appealing identity to me with the modern Horizon and Lord of the Rings sets, and i just dont enjoy modern anymore. I cant recognize it as the format i was getting into back in the day, the identity is not what i signed up for.. But! I am currently building my 6th pauper deck. Im not playing tournaments or anything, but i love the diversity of the format, and i can afford to have 6 decks on my shelf. I have a lot of friends who likes to play Magic, but dont want to invest into it, and pauper is a hilarious format to play with them. I often describe pauper as a format with fast mana, free spells and busted engines, but weaker finishers. It has a very cool identity, and i simply love it!
This video made my mind about buying a Azourios Control Deck. I'm a Mono W Humans player and felt incredibly inspired in what the UW can do. Thanks for the video ❤
I really don’t like deduce myself. I almost would rather have quick study. I mean you’re paying 4 to draw 2 from deduce. And 3 to draw 2 from quick study.
I think it might be that you have fewer windows to resolve a 3cmc spell in this format. With deduce you pay more mana, but you can afford to pay 2 mana more often in between turns.
@43:02 since you had the field of ruin, why not animate restless anchorage twice instead of just once? To get 2 map tokens instead of one since they don’t have any creature lands for you to field of ruin
frankly it's depressing that pioneer's UW control has a total of 6 non land cards in the main deck that were printed over 5 years ago. Power creep is erasing the game's history even in the formats that are supposed to preserve it.
@@cbktheguy The company wasn’t publicly traded and going full Fortnite mode with licenses. Comparing the 90’s power creep to this is a terrible parallel
@@friedspacecowboy8760 it’s really not in the nineties they experimented in design with high power blocks like urea block which would result in turn one kills in standard, and even with atrocious power creep and wanting to sell packs with their high powered new cards the game survived. It’s ok.
After watching this and playing this and against this in standard, I’m pretty sure sunfall is just a better card than supreme verdict. The exile is relevant quite often and the incubate token often wins the game or also has to be removed. I think its worth 1 more mana
You can just board in rest in peace and verdict = the same outcome for exile. Pioneer alot of times you don't have time for 1 more mana. Verdict is just well rounded cheaper and can't be countered
Spell Pierce is brutal against Sunfall. Also, Spirits still sees some play, and Sunfall is countered by Mausoleum Wanderer. Verdict is hit by Queller, but the 1 drop countering 5 mana hurts way more than 3 mana stopping a 4 cost.
13:45 The long pause before the post mana leak land of shame.
😂
Reid takes everything in stride and is always so calm and collected. Such a pleasure to watch him play Magic
As a control player, this deck is a solid play in the format
Yes! More UW content! Prepping for the next pio RCQ with this deck and already checked out Nassif's version - but who doesn't love more Reid?
Downside of when your main deck gets top tier, everyone else plays it.

Really good idea, I did not notice this line of play. I will keep it in mind for future games.

Pro tip for control from Reid himself: "As it turned out, I had all the answers." So there you go kids.

Reid Duke playing control?? Yes please!!

Do you have a SB guide for this decklist? Thank You!
the way you talk about youre thought process👌👌
M1G1 is a great example of why you take wandering emperor with early TS. That card does so much.
Best substitute do Hallowed Moonlight in explorer?
Please Arena give us what we need for Pioneer. Watching this is just brutal!!
I think Explorer is 15 relevant cards off of Pioneer? That’s both a lot and honestly not too many.
Que cambios le harías a la baraja después de ver los resultados del pro tour Karlov?
Very excited to watch this!
Three hours of UW control? Sign me up.
That thumbnail is glorious.
Any ideas what to replace the Hallowed Moonlights with in Explorer?
Good question
Containment Priest
Thanks, I like!
Playing a UW control deck without 1 copy of Sphinx's Rev feels like a sin.
For sure! My pet card in all UW control. I would commit the sin of 61 cards to fit it
Why not board out Dig Through Time in the matchups where Rest In Peace comes in? Isn't it a super dead card if you have it while RIP is on the field?
Guys do you think that more Lifelink creatures are useful in SB?

The more important part is that on turn 4 it allows you to go deduce + removal/counterspell
rakdos seems to be an important matchup in a lot of formats lol
Pioneer and maybe standard
Lookin like Liam Gallagher with those glasses
But none of the Jund colors are in this deck!
Now I'm worried. What were the previous lies?😢

the restless land cycle has the attack trigger separate from the activated ability, doing it twice wont make two maps
Worldsouls rage is the new it card
A three-hour video? What is this, Fellowship of the Reid??? Good stuff, as always.
Men will say this and then take rakdos vampires to PTmurders
oh no uw control is the best deck in pioneer
