When we first are introduced to Shooter he's telling a story about when he was playing in a sectional game for Hickory and he shoots for the last shot and misses. Thats the best story he has to tell at the time. After this scene we catch him in the hospital telling the new story to the nurse and what a success it was. Tremendous arc for this character - the heart of the film.
So awesome and touching. When his son asked for guidance that was like the spark that ignited him and gradually brought out his best. During the 2nd huddle he was much more comfortable and confident.
What makes this film work when many sports movies don't, or are cliche, is that the details and feel are right. You can understand the excitement and stress of the games and the pressure that Hackman's character is under. How he has to make split second decisions and evaluate all kinds of factors, bringing all his experience and wisdom to bear at just the right moment (and also battle his own character flaws). Hackman is so good that he disappears into the part of the coach. I thought he should have been Oscar nominated, but maybe people had just gotten used to him being that excellent that it didn't register enough at Oscar time. Hopper and Hershey are both memorable also.
apart from 'The Natural' homerun... this is the best sports movie moment of all time!!!! Shooter--- let er fly, and then coaching his son, and comin thru.... Anybody's who's coached their kids. The BEST!
So many great subplots to this movie. I read that "Hoosiers" was renamed "Shooter" in Europe. Nice double-meaning. I wasn't surprised that Dennis got a best supporting actor nomination. But why Gene didn't get nominated as best actor escapes me. One on-line review said Gene was asked to do too much. Well, that's all part of the story, isn't it, overcoming adversity?
a few little known facts about "Shooter". After he dried out he bought a 3rd hand Harley and took off across the country, trying to find himself. that played out rather badly so he found a cult, living on an abandoned oil tanker. His coaching abilities came in handy, in that cult.
2:10 when they come back onto the court after Shooters first good huddle. Never forget seeing in the theater as a kid. Just all time great feels in a movie
Seems the best part of this is the shot of them running off. They cut across the camera on a short angle, which gives motion and grace to the team, expressing the triumph. Very good.
He was nominated for this. But Michael Caine won for Hannah and Her Sisters. But also Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe we’re nominated for Platoon. Hopper was nominated for 2 oscars in his career. The golden globes nominated him in the same category for Hoosiers and Blue Velvet in the same year. I do like Hoosiers, but I liked him better in Blue Velvet.
He was playing a psychopath and horrible person in Blue Velvet beforehand. Probably why he was rejected for his role in this. In this movie he was a much nicer person, but an alcoholic.
If you re-watch the clip they only stand IN the lane for about 3 seconds of game time (some of it is slowed down by slow-mo). Remember in 1952 they were playing with the old-style 'key,' only 6 feet wide vs. 12 for the modern 'key.' While the play was being set up, the picket fence guys (Rade and Everett) line up on the 'cutout' side of the key. Buddy brings the ball down and passes off to Jimmy, 'solo right.' Merle, the 'swing man' is down on the baseline. Buddy then runs down and joins Rade and Everett to form the 3-man 'picket fence.' As soon as that happens, Merle swings up around the picket fence, Jimmy hits him with the pass, he shoots, he scores, game over.

I get goosebumps every time I watch this scene!
R.I.P. Dennis Hopper
You are right!!!
I can't hear you over the ridiculous soundtrack lol
I love the way all those young men looked into his eyes for leadership. “You reckon #4 will put up their last shot dad?”
Anybody who's ever coached their kid cherishes this scene. And just one of many great scenes in the best sports movie ever made.
The smile after Shooter says don’t get caught watching the paint dry - first time in the movie he has his son’s attention and respect. Perfect.
Amazing sequence, and incredibly vulnerable performance from Dennis Hopper.
So awesome and touching. When his son asked for guidance that was like the spark that ignited him and gradually brought out his best. During the 2nd huddle he was much more comfortable and confident.
This powerful scene makes the later hospital scene so gutwrenching.
My eyes well up every time in multiple scenes whenever i I watch this movie
I'm not crying, YOU'RE CRYING!!!!!
Maybe the best part of the movie. Shooters son saw how lost he was, just needed a little push in the right direction.

"Rade, let yourself get taken out. Buddy, you drop down and take his place... Close that Lane."
EPIC.

The BEST!
My favorite scene in the film! The music and Dennis Hopper’s acting make this scene one of the best of all time.
The four who voted this down got caught watching the paint dry.
...since the year the winning team photo was hung on the gym wall!
themurph2000
Fuk em
I thought it was paint drive lol was I wrong?
@MUFC That’s nice, dear. Would you like a cookie?
@@e-rab_malibu34 ‘Fraid so. If they got caught “watching the paint dry,” they’d have been called for a 3-second violation.
Great supporting performance by the late great Dennis Hopper
Maybe one of Hopper's best moments. Maybe one of the best moments.
jkgooch23
True and True
Same year he played one of the best villains in movie history, Frank Booth of Blue Velvet.
3:51 It was such an exciting moment that even the opposing player, wearing 21, wanted to give Shooter a high five.
James Wow, yeah imagine today’s opponents being that good of sportsmen
Dennis Hopper is one of the All Time Great actors. He played some weird characters in movies but this movie really shows how good he was.
Great Scene !!! Love Dennis Hopper !!!
Arguably the greatest sports movie ever made featuring 2 of the greatest actors of all time
“I’ve done it again!.”
😂😂😂
I met him once 20yr after this. At the Kentucky derby he was a short small dude. But was cool!
Rest in Peace Dennis Hopper....

Bad rep. Was contrary and outspoken. Not in The Club.
Hopper made me want to live in a shack in the Indiana woods, wearing a top hat.

Chuck.Raney Raney haha! I get it!
This scene is so emotional! His day in the sun finally came
possibly the best scene in this great movie
"I've done it again!" LOL

The music score to this movie made it great. It's on spotify also.

Hopper and Hackman. LOL!!!!
hopper is a straight up wild man legend!
During the fling, Hackman and Hopper were sure this film would end their careers. They thought it was terrible.
Goosebumps
Shooter should be in the hall of fame
Anyone that’s ever let alcohol get the better of them was real proud during this scene.
I'm not crying, you are.
Great scene!
Never thought I'd see Lex Luthor and King Koopa in the same movie.
Out of all his roles, King Koopa? Really?
What a play from shooter!
At first as a parent you are proud of your kids. Eventually you realize you want them to be proud of you.
"Like a rusty steak knife cutting through a well-aged steak"
To Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. "WHY!" Wasn't Dennis Hopper given (least one) one Oscar for his career.
NYCR he did for this movie

should have won it for Texas Chain Saw part 2
He was playing a psychopath and horrible person in Blue Velvet beforehand. Probably why he was rejected for his role in this. In this movie he was a much nicer person, but an alcoholic.
0:51 lol the fact that he purposely done that is funny😆
@macgregor322
It was part of a montage going from game to game before this scene.
And boys Don’t get caught watching the paint dry!
Every single person on that team believed in each other! You don’t get that today!
Dennis Hopper coaches the basketball team when Gene Hackman is taking a break
I need a blanket watching this scene.
Is it just me or did Simmons watch this movie every day as a teenager when it came out?
Great defense Buddy!
It's just the right side of cheesey.
Big mistake - it's clearly No. 15 (Jimmy) who intercepts the pass, but when they cut to the closeup it's Buddy with the ball calling timeout.
Meh, he could have handed it off to 14 during the cut away.. :)
The drunk Tex Winter!
this is what imagine a all white school basketball team to play like.
lilHippo fundamentally sound? As a team?
Although terrific, it's not this scene that gets me, it's what Shooter does after.
Nick Nolte, Gene Hackman and Tom Hanks all got ejected in movies filmed in Indiana.
So in Indiana in the 50's was it legal for offensive players without the ball to just stand in the lane for like 10 seconds?
If you re-watch the clip they only stand IN the lane for about 3 seconds of game time (some of it is slowed down by slow-mo). Remember in 1952 they were playing with the old-style 'key,' only 6 feet wide vs. 12 for the modern 'key.'

only if they are white
Of Course it was. Alot of the rules are different, now to back then.
You do realize that they didn't have shot clocks back then? No shot clocks
Y2M You realize that had nothing to do with what you’re responding to.. haha
Even great men fall victim to the bottle. They might surprise ya.
I like how the ref is automatically apologizing before he’s said a word.
Something tells me all the views came from Simmons..
This actually happened. But in 1951 instead of 1952. In Indiana near Cincinnati border.
Just like Pop did so Becky Hammon could coach the Spurs.
Now boys dont get caught watching the paint dry the picket fence - thats english language imagine?
3.. 2.. 1.. Let’er fly.. In-and-out.. well, I was fouled..
close that lane
Individualism ...I like it 😅
Simmons.
Simmons
Worst coaching nonsensical advice from Shooter but who cares? Its great because Shooter redeems himself.
alex smith ftw.
