I have been involved in music, playing and singing for nearly 75 years and I am soooo grateful for the internet that has allowed me to discover masters of music I virtually knew nothing about. I had begun to believe music had all but been replaced with modern noise that completely lacked the beauty of songs that required more than 3 chords. THANK YOU! MUSIC IS NOT DEAD!!!!
You may be surprised, but i enjoy the same hearing classic music, jazz, funk or other progressive music... I love charlie parker, or thelonius monk or ornette coleman, but i love the same stravinski or jimi hendrix.. I mean, there are true artists out there that created real ART, and our mind has to understand every possible tone correlations that have meaning... Simple or complex, multiiorchestral or solo, our ears have to listen to everything, our mind must reject the nonesence, our heart can enjoy the valuable... If we want more, we have to progress and understand more... It took me really years of time to understand that coleman wasnt just some crazy noise.. but a genious creator who combined unreachable tonalities to produce fine melodies. Of course when we dance we enjoy Barry, if we want to listen starred, we put some stay still and try to follow music..
Mr Charles Parker is said to have sung Be My Love in the bathtube, the Mario Lanza version. There is one live recording of Mr Bird performing the tune. Mr Barry Harris is so great, I have seen him only once. With McPherson, Al Dodgeson, Lonnie Hilliyer in Wihelmshaven Germany, 1977. On this evening they played out of the Bird book. Have a recording, reminds me of Dean Benedetti.
@wifey: is there an authoritative basis for the "average" rating and would it be referring to his talent or his popularity? Barry made notable contributions to the Bebop piano tradition which is quite recognized in standard jazz texts
I think Barry Harris was/is just too "Bebop" for even Bebop cats, and, he never did truly dig the Hard Bop era revolution, i.e. post Miles, Trane, ask he expressed his reasons of what he did "not like about the tune" (look up Barry Harris Jazz Class videos). Maybe it's to a fault, but at the same time, there are no REAL harmonic Bebop 'scientists' left on the planet. Even players like Dr. Billy Taylor and even the great Hank Jones have never explained the intricacies of Jazz/Bebop harmony and theory behind it the way Barry does or has played. Barry is the Real Real.
Harris chose to go the teaching route rather than mass appeal. I don't think he had the same ability as his contemporaries Hank Jones or Tommy Flanagan. his mode of thinking seems to be stuck in Bud Powell, and refused to do literally anything else that came from past the 1950s.
Beautiful melodies, lovely chords, one after the other, and the sweet music invites you to live... You may be alone, poor or even disabled, whatever you are as this sound penetrates your heart, it turns everything to a Christmas joy...
Mr. Harris is a beautiful man. He's still alive too which makes it even better. Lesser known names like his are the backbones of this genre. There is a huge number of lesser known geniuses. His work speaks for him. He did something with Sonny Stitt and Mr. Stitt sounded more fluid and sure of himself than I ever heard him. Mr. Harris must have excellent chemistry!
@@unk1911 Really? Omg. Thank you for letting me know. My general Jazz station that I get updates on our living legends, had poor frequency yesterday, otherwise I would ave heard 😥
2:37 that melody over the 2-5-1 cadence to bring the section to a close there was intensely beautiful! My goodness, how anyone just pulls that outta nowhere completely beats me.
Only thing is this is jazz music, as also this sc swing is a white musicians intepretation of melodies. Nice smooth jazz is this with a very standard jazz trio and piece.
Can't stop listening to this wonderful standard which I've just come across. A beautiful melody, a harmony, that moves me in time with the strings of the piano. Thanks for posting this video.Barry Harris, music is happiness!
I'm thinking, with old age you can separate those who relied on shiny technique / virtuosity for their career, from those who always took care of only playing the notes they felt 100%. Barry is definitely in the second category...
Maaan... this is so beautiful, this is a tutorial video how to play balanced jazz))) from this performance, young musicians can learn many things, god bless porfessor Barry))))
Listen to the count he tried to swing it and he made that sound with his spirit it was not what he wanted. But he made it with no worries Barry was and still is the master !
Es un Maestro, que buen gusto tiene y su capacidad para improvisar y armonizar, sus fraseos, actualmente tiene 88 años y sigue enseñando. Sus influencias son las de Art Tatum, Bud Powell, y otros. Pero es digno de admiración.
Ha ha, I love how Mr. Harris can´t keep quiet, mumbling some phrases he is doing with the piano, lol, such as in 1:32 to 1:43. Same thing Glenn Gould used to do while recording. Charlie Haden on bass?
Not a specific tutorial but if you look at Isaac Raz’s videos on UA-cam he is the ultimate authority on Barry’s approach to harmonic theory. He’s attended Barry’s classes for years and teaches it way more completely and in a much more useable form than anyone else on yt
I just found this gem , after a long hard day driving in Manhattan.
To sit and have a glass of red.
저는 정말이지 사람과 사랑에 대해 비관적이고 염세적인 사람이지만 배리 해리스의 이 연주를 듣다보면 숨이 붙어있는 동안은 한순간도 빠짐없이 사랑에 빠지고 싶어져요
I agree!

Barry Harris by far one of the most underrated and most untalked about jazz players of all time.

I think that's finally changing

Rest In Peace Barry, thank you for igniting my love for jazz.
So beautiful Barry Harris! Be safe and healthy while the world waits to see you again,

Listening to Barry playing always brings a smile to my face
You are listening. To a genius who invented harmony we should bow to him no one can ever replace Barry Nigel Nash
Effortless performance, glistening with touches of such exquisite beauty.

So tender.

Not only is the music fantastic, but the piano he's playing sounds good, too!
So swinging, so expressive, so harmonically deep- This is music..
Exquisite playing. Perfect phrasing, perfect dynamic levels.....Hell: PERFECT EVERYTHING. True masters of their crafts.
This might be my first time tearing up from swing music. It’s so emotional. Full of heartfelt lines and rich voicings.
Beautiful said..
Very beautifully said indeed ;)

I love you Barry!!!!!!!!!
His improvisations really add to the original melody. He's a great player!

True. I hope I live long enough to be in category 2.
pretty subjective label there bud. Dont assume your final judgements on technique vs taste are a universal truth.
Definitely ok! with you ! it's nearly unbelievable with these old fingers !
PERFECT IN EVERY DETAIL!
Beautiful and elegant playing of a lovely standard. Thanks for posting
Gracias por la musica tuve la suerte de escucharlo dos veces en vivo
Came back today to get another "helping" of the Master at work!

Barry so magnificient, what an innate smooth technique, projects the true jazz sentiment, effortless as others here have expressed!!
Barry Harris is right. Dancing and Jazz must be connected.

No, not Charlie Haden. I don't know who it is, but he plays marvelously.
You are correct. This is him: kieranovers.com/ (Kieran Overs)
Great!
who's on bass - killing feel
Glad you dig him too. He has a great sound. He is from Toronto and his name is Kieran Overs.
Nice :)
Bliss!
I love this. Anybody know where I can find sheet music for something anywhere close to what Barry is playing ?
you can find some here: aleckatzmusic.com

Anyother guys who play this tune? Can't find other recordings.
Kenny Dorham's is great
Can someone do a step by step tutorial for this Barry piece???
I'll do a sheet music transctiption if you like. But search UA-cam; someone has done an analysis already, I forget his name at the moment.
