    my grandmother had an HS-U100 and it was so reliable. It lasted for years. She loved the programming on it to set the record times. It was easy for her to use. I rememeber when I was a little kid, she went to put a tape in it and it wouldnt eject, and lost all power. I took it apart and found a blown fuse. Replaced the fuse with the correct replacement and it lasted another 15 years until she got rid of it bc she stopped using vhs.

    A true master at work! Thanks to you I fully stripped down my Mitsubishi HS-M59 (UK), and rebuilt the mechanism with all the correct lubricants, new belts etc. Also managed to get hold of NOS Sankyo Capstan motor pulleys, which was amazing at this age. Working beautifully again. Also replaced the one 'Rubicon' that had started to leak.

    i must have cleaned and replaced a lot of mode switches in my time.
    Here in the UK SVHS was a very niche format only bought by video editing
    enthusiasts with deep pockets.
    The shop i worked in had a couple of models that took a very long time to sell.
    When they intoduced SVHS play back on the better standard decks the demo tape
    sold a lot of them, the improvement in quality was so apparent, but you had great difficulty
    finding precorded SVHS tapes.
    Sadly the UK was the last to get the better tech, plus most customers didn't care about
    quality as long as the picture was watchable.
    I invested my time and money into Laserdisc, i must have been one of the first to import
    a brand new Pioneer HLD-X9, it cost a lot of money but it blew the other players out of the
    water and still does, i have amassed a box of spare parts just incase, the grip ring on these
    is a common cause of problems. some spares are still available from Pioneer Japan.

      Where i worked the workshop manager would shout at you if he seen you
      with switch cleaner in your hand, once those contacts are tarnished at some point they
      will fail again, we kept a good stock of the most common mode switches. Fastforward to today and switchcleaner
      is the only option, any new old stock switches will be well tarnished@@12voltvids

      Was Toshiba SV-F990 S-VHS more-reliable than Mitsubishi HS-U80? Many former VCR techs said, "Yes," including Studio Sound Electronics, former VCR belt online retailer.

    i have one of those JVC VHS hi-fi machines where you have to remove the mechanism (or transport) together with main board, then you can release plastic holders to get the mechanism out (high risk of something braking) then you can get access to mode switch and belt. not easy to maintenance

    I remember reading on a forum that the very old Mitsubishi HS-411 / 421 and top models around the same era had an amazingly built mechanism with direct drive. Do these later series ones also have direct drive ? By the way what do you think about the previous top model to the U80, which was the U70 ? Is it also a pain in the butt to service ?

    All that I know is that the U80 was AKA the HV-V36 and HV-V5000 in Japan. Meanwhile the "newer" U82 was similar to the JDM HV-V1000 in exterior design, except that there are far fewer control buttons on the flipdown panel (as compared to the V1000)......

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  10 місяців тому

      The u82 didn't have the digital effects crap. It was all 100% analog. It did however edit better and had the dynamic tracking for variable speed playback.

    • @vampyrelycan99
      @vampyrelycan99 10 місяців тому

      @@12voltvids AFAIK a lot of S-VHS decks back then had digital effects "filters" but many customers ignored them and instead focused on the playback stability and performance etc. In other words they were looking into features like TBC, DNR, comb filters, effective Y/C seperation etc. Unfortunately Mitsubishi didn't have TBC on many of its S-VHS decks (not even the U80/82) until the early-mid '90s, and that none of the USDM decks had TBC (not even the U95)......

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  10 місяців тому +1

      @@vampyrelycan99 TBC is not required and actually reduces the picture quality. Yes everyone wants them because they are digitizing with low quality capture cards. High end capture has the tbc on the input.
      When i was editing at the local TV station. We edited with what was known as an RF dub. The signal right off the tape was dubbed. No tbc no processing at all. The quality was superrior. The tbc was only used on playback before broadcast.

Was wondering if there’s any chance that you could possibly take a look at it if I mailed it to you somehow. And how much you’d charge. With the cancel culture that goes around these days one has to be very careful what they say because what would be considered completely benign to one person is completely offensive to another. Hsu82 is a very complex machine that has tons of issues especially with the dynamic tracking heads. Nobody in their right mind would want to tackle one because the chances of it working for more than a few hours before something else goes bad are slim. When they were new they were a headache. Yes normal record and play were fine but the trick playback was a disaster even when they were relatively young and age has not been good on them.
