The decline in the job market has virtually nothing to do with AI. Which is being used as a convenient smokescreen. The reality is that most tech companies were built for and around an economy with extremely (as in, historically) low-interest rates. That world is now gone, and a market correction was inevitable. In that correction the big players cut jobs since they now have to spend more cash servicing debts and R&D - the small players die in droves because they can no longer borrow money easily and cheaply, and also because big investors can suddenly make returns in safer parts of the market (bonds et al.) rather than gambling on tech firms, which only made sense when returns elsewhere were zero.
interesting take. I've said/thought/known for a while now that the economy was certainly to blame but I didn't think about the interest rate perspective. AI is definitely not to blame and it won't be for many years. you can guide it to write boilerplate and now with Gemini you can have it look at your code and make services based on what you've already written but it's still not writing unique/new code for new features. that takes human pattern recognition and old fashioned research to decide how it's all put together
It should actually discourage you a lot. Statistically we're less likely to get hired. Maybe there's a better chance elsewhere. People have to keep that in mind. @@devslopes

Can’t rely solely on your degree in a field that requires much more than that to get in. If someone who doesn’t have the degree has the technical/soft skills and portfolio desired by a company then they’re probably getting hired over you. Look at what else you could be doing to look attractive to employers so when they see you with the same level skills/portfolio but also the degree to put you over the top, you’ll be who they want.
Ok so I live in Tokyo, and if you know Japanese its EXTREMELY easy to find an entry level job, its unlike the silicon valley tech bubble, over here coding and programming was NEVER glorified to that extent, the image of a rich coder IS NOT A THING over here. when people think about high paying nice jobs they are thinking about being a dentist or a doctor, or a business person. What I mean is, in a lot of these companise they hire people with 0 experience and no degree and train them from 0. of course there are better jobs that hope for more experience but they are open for entry level and even people that have only done freelance. its always interesting to see the panic in the job market in NA and seeing the stark contrast we have over here.
"10 - 20 applications per day" I feel like the guy who who made this statement has zero idea of the job market situation. Alot of open positions have lengthy annoying job application processes that could take an hour to complete. And even if you do e.g 5 per day, you'd burn yourself out real quick and leave zero time for preparing yourself for the interviews. The only way to really stand out is to message recruiters and reach out to your network! Honestly, most of my success so far has been from that.

I used to bartender in a wealthy family town. I can attest that connections are the way to go. It helps that I stand out, as a blonde female with plenty of personality but I’ve heard nothing but crickets when applying the traditional way.
10-20 jobs applications a day? Holy smokes I'm lucky if I find 1-3 job posts a week in my field (android development). Granted, I'm based in Canada and have the feeling the tech industry is exponentially worse out here.
This goes back to the question of whether or not you’re being picky. Apply to jobs outside of just android development. Get in and get paid and then look for your desired position while you’re already working.

Since there aren't that many Flutter jobs out there, I've been applying to all sorts of jobs I thought might be interesting, Flutter, native Android, backend, web frontend, you name it... I've probably applied to hundreds of positions by now, so far I've only been invited to 4 interviews, all for Flutter jobs, all dropped me after the first interview... The point is when I apply to jobs with other technologies, I don't even get contacted

It’s no question that a lot more people are turning away from learning code - which is a good thing for current people that have passion for it and current graduates. It definitely filters out a ton of people that want to learn it just for the money aka bad developers or engineers

Very informative video, but I am going to be a bit contrarian. When people say, "you need to have soft skills", it's time to leave. Yes, programmers tend to lack soft skills, and that can be quite annoying, but when I hear that I think, "okay, my ability to turn out good code has been devalued, and I'm going to be paid less and less for the same job." It also says to me that the industry prizes predictable mediocrity over more volatile excellence, and that this is now a job for agreeable but not particularly interesting or intellectually ambitious people. Given how corrupt technical interviews tend to be - you have to be smart but you can't ever be smarter than the interviewer - this video is telling me that the problem has only gotten worse.
My rebuttal to that would be that you're just writing computer code, ok? You're not Mozart or Beethoven. The vast majority of programmers aren't doing anything particularly important in their jobs, and there are very few programmers who are irreplaceable. If you're that good then why would you need a wage slave job in the the first place? Nobody wants to spend their working days with some asshole or weirdo if they don't have to. Life is too short for that.
@@jimmyjakes1823 Completely agree. I believe that the profession failed to learn basic standards for interactions, and it has weakened us. I make a point of being considerate to the people I work with, and I get very annoyed when this isn't reciprocated. However, for a good part of my career I had to work remotely from abroad, and this not only halved my wages but locked me out of a lot of more lucrative opportunities. So, although I am a perfectly nice person, it was "as if" I didn't have the soft skills required, and I had to sell myself on skill alone - delivering working code in abnormally short amounts of time. I even wrote a programming language to help with rapid prototyping. So when I hear that skills are losing their market value, I head for the door.

Its always a bluff to talor the resume to every company and simply not possible when the entry level position needs 3+ yrs of experience . You still need to spam send your resume to many many many firms to have a standing chance while still trying to upskill yourself and using LinkedIn for referrals .
If you're in programming you should be able to automate most of it; hell, google chrome will automate most for you with just autofill. If you can't do even that then maybe you're in the wrong profession.
If no one is hiring you, but you have engineering skills, NOW is a great time to start your OWN tech company. Get 2 or 3 of your other programmer friends in a room, brainstorm some ideas for a service you can offer, and do it! You never know what you could build between now and this time next year.
@AashishTelgote-zx4wp The “money to start a company” thing doesn’t always apply to every type of business. Sometimes you just have to use what you have to get to where you want. In 2024 there are so many resources and platforms to offer your services on. And then, when you’re doing it with a team of people, you can be highly productive and profitable. I think the industry shift is forcing people to be creative. There are a few people i personally know that taught themselves how to code, and make well over six figures doing contract work, just from knowing Python/JUCE.
It's not even that there's not enough job postings. It's that recruiters and team managers are becoming WAY too picky and are requiring everything under the sun to even get looked at. The top engineers know concepts and can adapt to other technologies with that knowledge. But recruiters are becoming too conservative because companies are losing money and can't afford to make the wrong choice. I think this stems strongly from the cost of living.

Just a small correction. At min 3:44, the graph showed that the most affected group were those aged 30-40 (~47%) while the second most affected were those aged 20-30 (~35%). This suggests that more senior devs were getting sacked than junior devs.
Or there are more engineers 30-40 than 20-30 hence why the make up a higher % of the overall layoffs. There are definitely more senior eng roles out there than junior.
Garbage advice, there's not enough hours in the day to work on leetcode, do freelance work/portfolio projects and find 10 to 20 positions at your level that happen to use the same tech stack (that we have to write unique resumes and cover letters for), learn new technologies. This is the linkedIn sort of hustle culture that places all the responsibility on individuals rather than talking about how are we going to get through this market, how did the market get this bad, companies that have been doing layoffs should be shamed etc. I've been doing the job search full time for months and your video has contributed nothing.

Literally this week one of our students just landed a job as a react developer - something that is so “unlikely.” It isn’t a hustle culture. It’s simple steps that are proving to work.
As a web developer, this skill is going to continue taking a nap for at least 1.5 years. Not my tailored resume, not my 20 job applications a day that gave me the job I have right now; it's the number of contacts on my phone, That's it: you know people, you get jobs. It'll take a while to come back, so I highly recommend people not going all in, just keep an eye on trend, but do other things to put food on the table.
If you are tailoring your resume and cover letter each time, There is no way you can get 10 - 20 of those done in a day. Tailoring takes an hour for each job application. I think this is an unrealistic expectation.
@JosephM1M5A4 I graduated from a bootcamp and meet up and talk to graduates like myself about their job hunting experience and I assure you I'm not the only one that feels like this is about the same amount of time it takes multiple people who are trying to apply unless they are massively doing easy applies and skipping tailoring. Unless you have some sort of advice for tailoring faster since you feel like I'm "slow" your comment doesn't benefit me or anyone going through weeks or months of being unemployed.
I graduated in Electronic Engineering back in 2020. I got hired from off campus back in 2021. I only knew HTML, CSS and a little JS that I thought to learn to get Software developer job. Luckily one company was hiring during COVID. I applied, passed the computer based exam. Got mail for technical round. Just after 10min of technical round and 5 min of HR, I got my first job. I was really surprised 😮. Although they pay was average, I never thought any company will hire me. I was so dipressed few months back but I kept pushing myself to learn about Web Dev. It really helped me. Now I have 3 years of experience and I got promoted last month with good pay. I'm so happy 😁.
I've been programmer since 1998 ( 26 years how eh ), I went through Java ( early days ), COBOL, LISP, Fortran, SQL , PL SQL, ASP NET, CSS, Assembly , and whatnot , and of course C/C++ ( still using it today ) ... my 2cents why programmers are the last to lose their jobs .. passing knowledge as programmer is very rare and very hard, i.e. every new person picking coding as their future will go through the same mistakes and solve the same problems over and over as the experience one, this is just the reality ,demand for programmers ( good ones ) only goes up ... and last but not least, what is good programmer, for me is the one that has curiosity, drive to create and desire continue and not give up when is hard ( i.e. bug to fix takes alot of time to find , so one has to improvise )
Programming is actually just part of creating software which is the product of software engineering process. In fact, not everyone has a knack for working as software engineer. Every engineer must be an analytical type of mind and should get to grips well with first principles of the trade, with that level of competency, learning languages, frameworks ... is just a matter of need and/or interest in a life long course of continuous learning. IMO, most of those who are coding now is not really software engineer. There's simply too much excess in tech to carry on. That may be one of the reasons causing current wave of massive tech layoffs.
But you get valued for the work experience that you have. You know how to solve and translate to a new language much easier than a newer dev. This is more of cause of concern for new dev or fresh grads because they'll be replaced by the mid level devs being fired and being rehired than the new devs. It is the same as: I bought a house in 90s, why can't you buy a house now? when housing prices are 2x that it was back then and the house has depreciated in quality (ie it's older by 20 years).
I'm sorry but the fact is that for many companies, the job application process can take several hours. It is simply not possible to send 10-20 applications per day. 5-10 maybe.
I have yet to see a single job application that requires more than 10 minutes to complete. Maybe there is some senior level developer one that actually submitting code for a problem but most don't even do that.
In my opinion the job market is saturated and many programmers from India and China are operating remotely on western markets. Especially in the states where is no language barrier.
@RajinderYadav This is not true in USA. It's very easy to outsource work to India and China and in fact it simplifies the paperwork. Most companies use offshore contractors like Infosys or Wipro they don't hire offshore directly.

I can't lie, this is a bit discouraging. I'm mid-level and was laid off last summer. I've had 1 interview. ONE! Several recruiters have reached out then ghosted. I'm struggling to keep up with requirements. I might have to become serious with pivoting into data science. I don't hear about them being laid off and I want to work with numbers more anyways.

I have never seen a 40+ year old junior developer and here we are where bootcamp programs tell anybody can become a rockstar developer for a small fee.
I'm 36 and looking to switch my career from a firefighter to a programmer but it's so hard to even get an interview after applying to so many open positions. I always have this fear in the back of my head that if i leave my currnt job for something in tech, ill get let go and be screwed.
And I'd always say to anybody if one doesn't succeed in the tech field and STILL have a hard time finding a job no matter what you do and no matter how great your resume is, etc. but you still need a job, you can always come drive a bus. It's where if you got a CDL (where you might have to study a bit, but it isn't hard to get. And it's like a driving car and/or driving for Uber). In my field there is no competition in landing a job; my field is actually UNDERSATURATED; there's hardly any hoops to jump through in getting job unlike in tech. Plus, the it's great pay, great benefits, you get treated with respect and not treated like you're just a number, you won't have to compete with people, you won't have to worry about A.I., bad economy, or none of that. Plus, it's fun traveling around! Driving a bus can be as fun as playing a video game. And I don't work that many hours either. In fact, I get 5 hours breaks each day and on my break, THAT'S when I do things in tech like make (or play) video games/develop websites; I go out to my favorite restaurant, or do whatever else I want to do, or I'd just go to sleep until it's time to work again. Plus, I get lots of days of and my job is EASY!! Days off?? I just came back from a week in Mexico!!! And I'm planning to go to Thailand soon too. So, this is something else to think about too if you get tired of all of the hoopla, trials, tribulations, doormat treatment that which nobody deserves in tech!

nice video - but i think you left out a really important variable which is how many people are trying to become programmers. imo programming (due to the ease of access) is facing the opposite problem as the medical industry: over-saturation. ive heard this from several people, computer science programs in several schools have become very large because many kids are expecting to graduate with a bachelors degree and immediately get a high paying job. unfortunately this no longer seems to be the case :(
The programming section is no longer a prestige job. Too much demand back here and will be worse if the future. Higher demand for workers doesn't mean a higher chance of getting into. The number of employees will be 3x-5x higher who want to themselfs get into. The 25% of difference is too low for that. Maybe it's better there if it will be at least 75% or even 125%? The salary is averaged for the existing number of employees, that is, in this case the, percentage of average earnings for the employee falls. And the saddest thing is that the requirement for special skills from junior employees will only become more complex and make to do a senior developer work just to get an entry-level salary. Yeah, the programming economy industry is fucked now. No surprise why there's a lot of layoffs and rejections.

To sponsor an H1B you need to pay the person the same as an American and usually higher so not really. Also, it's capped at 65k a year (for all professions) which is nothing.

I would like to see data on how these layoffs overlap with other market data such as fed rates, market caps etc. In other words, how was the market performing quantitatively during this period and how can we decide when the market is doing well enough to consider prospective job openings for tech. That's something that almost nobody on the web is taking into consideration.

Some good advice, but too much propaganda. Yes, AI will and is replacing programmers. Software jobs pay more than farm jobs so the tractor comparison is flawed.
With how the market is playing out, it no longer feels worth it to get into the field. Not only do you have the hurdle of getting an interview, acing the interview, landing the job, but now you'll also have the hurdle of not getting fired or replaced in the future by emerging technologies or outsourcing. Years ago, CS WAS the safe path to a great and long career, but now there's just too much fear and it's apparent corporate greed has taken over. If you genuinely like CS then go ahead and pursue it, but don't expect the same 1337 pay and work/life balance as how it was in the past. While it is true that AI won't be taking over (anytime soon, at least), it HAS taken over a good amount of entry level positions. From a business perspective, it makes more sense to get rid of a junior that you're paying 60k/year and bumping a senior's pay by 10-20k while giving him/her a ChatGPT 4o subscription. What's the senior going to do? Quit? Ok bye! Let's look at this list of 10,000 applicants that just applied in the last hour.

It can. With ai. Give ai all your info and the job req and tell it to tailor your resume to the job reqs. Then quickly edit the funkiness...seconds. 😅 had a coworker literally send out hundreds with this method.
You said sending 10 -20 jobs per day, I wonder how can you do it? Every company they need you to register, fill-in the same information that on your resume already, put a cover letter. That takes me ~25 mins per application. So 2 application would be 1 hour. If you have classes and other staff to do, that is a lof of time.
His take on making emphasis on real projects is good, I like that, but people are always demeaning degrees without realizing that getting a degree involved acquiring problem solving, abstract concept analysis, and critical thinking skills, that's what you get out of your degree, of course it's not going to give you all the specific skills that you need for a job, but people need to stop shitting on college majors just because, trust me when I tell you that the difference in the quality of the work of someone coming out of a bootcamp, and someone with an actual degree is very noticeable, and there will always be a skill gap between these two individuals assuming that they have the same amount of natural talent and that they are putting in the same amount of effort
This is what happened, and don't listen to what this guy says, because it isn't what really occurred. Maybe half the layoffs are because of a bubble, the other half is because activist investors demanded higher profitability, and CEOs listened. When interest rates rose, companies came under pressure because activist investors could point and say, hey I can get 5% or more if I just loan the money out or buy government treasuries. Also, half of the bubble related layoff, has already been hired back either at a lower salary or (more commonly) by outsourcing the department to places such as India. But it displaces Americans right and left, and creates a dog-eat-dog work environment, which tech workers are experiencing (but all other non-unionized industries have been experiencing for decades).
Hi! I’m currently a high school senior and im planning on majoring in CS in college. Currently I’ve taken college level courses in JAVA programming and self learned some python. What do you recommend I do outside of class to prepare myself? Also whats the best way to write and identify clean quality code?
dont do it bro, find a different major with a more stable job, code on the side. I graduated a while ago, with all the right credentials, they absolutely do not want juniors.
I wish I was able to tell these things to my younger self, but definitely do lots and LOTS of projects. Practice, practice, practice, and sometimes look at tutorials only when you need to. Use all the free time you can to create interesting and complex projects that you enjoy doing, because once you're an adult, more often than not you'll be worrying more about paying the bills than finishing your side projects. If you can't think of anything to build, there's a good list of projects that ThePrimeTime covered in his video (search Projects Every Programmer Should Try by ThePrimeTime on UA-cam), but basically: - Text editor (build the UI from scratch) - 2D game - Space Invaders - Compiler You'll learn lots of things with just the first one. Once you're able to do these projects comfortably, you'll already have the right mindset to work on any project on any software dev fields, not just full-stack, so it'll be easier for you to pivot if a particular field is not to your liking/bad job offers. One other thing, try limiting your project timeline within 2-3 months. It's easier to slack off once you work on a project more than that. Once you get better at programming and you've established your workflow, try limiting them to 1 month or less instead. And also, set the features you want to be in the v1.0 release ahead of time, and only focus on those, so you can avoid feature creep. The important thing is to finish projects, not to just start them.
Coding is a bad carreer choice in the US. Companies can get it donde remotely from Latin America, China or any other place with lower wages than the US.
IOT is not a skill, Robotics is a huge, mathematically complicated area of knowledge. Lots of useless AI projects are now indevelopment so that's probably a bit of a bubble.
What you're saying is try harder not smarter and that's a recipe for failure. The real solution is to move from coding to software engineering in specific area and then to higher level position like team lead, architecture, CTO.

And that position is in most cases for senior or team leads 😂😂 On top of all that most of these positions require you to relocate for a job that can be done from home. I have not noticed any slowdown in the industry myself, there are lots and lots and lots of jobs. They just want to make sure they hire qualified people and they are well aware that the chatGPT world allows folks to destroy coding interview tests which is a concern for most folks.
This video aged well with a few more announcements of layoffs... What people need to focus on is trying to be good at what they do and find out how to advertise it to employers effectively because that's the key to getting the dam job. While all these tips can help but everyone's journey is different and results are always different from a case by case basis unless you publish research on what actually gets you employed. Also the job market is fucken huge and software engineering makes up around 1-2 million people out of the 100 million (reported in 2022 by BLS) people employed so if things are not working out you can always try to move to a different profession completely that pays decently. I wouldn't also lean on the statistics that the BLS publish because they can drop the ball hard. But what do I know... I guess people want to told dreams can come true if you follow these steps even when it's statistically unlikely to net you a successful result. I work as a researcher and almost everybody in my department can and does some coding as part of their job. Programming is just a very useful skillset which has become overhyped and overrated, especially as a profession. Right now we use general purpose computational tools that are astronomical in cost. With the tremendous leaps taken by AI, I should be able to write with AI assistance in the near future, for example a specialized finite element code to solve a multi-physics coupled problem without having to hole myself up in a cave for 3 months. Already, I see my colleagues using chat gpt often in their work and these are PhDs. The mathematician in the next cubicle codes all the time in python, and he says chat gpt has been extremely helpful. In the future, I see many professionals and companies developing their own custom applications with AI and this will further deplete the need for full time programmers.

@@kzelmer when I was student and studied computer science there was no market for programmer in my country, no easy way to move to another country and no internet. My father thought that I would be unemployed. Now it’s almost 20 years since then. I never been unemployed and I enjoy what I’m doing.
So i graduated in a very bad time it seems. No wonder many of my classmates have been unable to find jobs. In dept, no jobs, going bankrupt. It's not ideal. I myself got 2-years of industry experience and the knowledge to write high quality scalable code and fullstack RestAPI skills. Still companies don't even care to look at my portfolio, as they are exclusively looking for 5 or more years of experience. I get that companies want productivity, efficiency and speed and while I probably still lack on those fronts, it's a bit silly how much the focus seems to be in artifical time rather than skills and results.

well I'm 28 and did the same thing, found my first job last september as a software developer, did take me 9 months but would've been less if I kept applying and stopped getting demoralised whenever I got a rejection from a job I liked, I also built a portfolio alongside while I was looking
Am I the only one here who thinks sending out 20 applications a day is a ridiculous requirement? When I apply I always include a tailored cover letter that takes around 25 - 40 minutes to write. I can’t afford to do that 20 times a day

With all of your analysis in mind, I would like to know your opinion on my current state of options: Should I take Software Engineering (MEng) or should I take "Mathematics and Computer Science (MSci)". It's significantly harder. You will likely still find a job in this market, before you end up making any amount of comparable revenue with your own business (not even speaking about profits).
In today's world, you basically have to work just to find work. You may even work harder finding the job than you will on the actual job itself. Only the strong will survive.... it is what it is.
There are too many developers in most segments of the market. I need embedded developers, which are much harder to come by because so many people think C/C++ is old and stupid. Expand your knowledge beyond the web and you will likely open a lot of doors.

The decline in the job market has virtually nothing to do with AI. Which is being used as a convenient smokescreen. The reality is that most tech companies were built for and around an economy with extremely (as in, historically) low-interest rates. That world is now gone, and a market correction was inevitable. In that correction the big players cut jobs since they now have to spend more cash servicing debts and R&D - the small players die in droves because they can no longer borrow money easily and cheaply, and also because big investors can suddenly make returns in safer parts of the market (bonds et al.) rather than gambling on tech firms, which only made sense when returns elsewhere were zero.

AI is definitely not to blame and it won't be for many years. you can guide it to write boilerplate and now with Gemini you can have it look at your code and make services based on what you've already written but it's still not writing unique/new code for new features. that takes human pattern recognition and old fashioned research to decide how it's all put together

Can’t rely solely on your degree in a field that requires much more than that to get in. If someone who doesn’t have the degree has the technical/soft skills and portfolio desired by a company then they’re probably getting hired over you. Look at what else you could be doing to look attractive to employers so when they see you with the same level skills/portfolio but also the degree to put you over the top, you’ll be who they want.

Ok so I live in Tokyo, and if you know Japanese its EXTREMELY easy to find an entry level job, its unlike the silicon valley tech bubble, over here coding and programming was NEVER glorified to that extent, the image of a rich coder IS NOT A THING over here. when people think about high paying nice jobs they are thinking about being a dentist or a doctor, or a business person.
What I mean is, in a lot of these companise they hire people with 0 experience and no degree and train them from 0. of course there are better jobs that hope for more experience but they are open for entry level and even people that have only done freelance.

I feel like the guy who who made this statement has zero idea of the job market situation. Alot of open positions have lengthy annoying job application processes that could take an hour to complete. And even if you do e.g 5 per day, you'd burn yourself out real quick and leave zero time for preparing yourself for the interviews. The only way to really stand out is to message recruiters and reach out to your network! Honestly, most of my success so far has been from that.

This goes back to the question of whether or not you’re being picky. Apply to jobs outside of just android development. Get in and get paid and then look for your desired position while you’re already working.

Very informative video, but I am going to be a bit contrarian. When people say, "you need to have soft skills", it's time to leave. Yes, programmers tend to lack soft skills, and that can be quite annoying, but when I hear that I think, "okay, my ability to turn out good code has been devalued, and I'm going to be paid less and less for the same job." It also says to me that the industry prizes predictable mediocrity over more volatile excellence, and that this is now a job for agreeable but not particularly interesting or intellectually ambitious people. Given how corrupt technical interviews tend to be - you have to be smart but you can't ever be smarter than the interviewer - this video is telling me that the problem has only gotten worse.
My rebuttal to that would be that you're just writing computer code, ok? You're not Mozart or Beethoven. The vast majority of programmers aren't doing anything particularly important in their jobs, and there are very few programmers who are irreplaceable. If you're that good then why would you need a wage slave job in the the first place? Nobody wants to spend their working days with some asshole or weirdo if they don't have to. Life is too short for that.
@@jimmyjakes1823 Completely agree. I believe that the profession failed to learn basic standards for interactions, and it has weakened us. I make a point of being considerate to the people I work with, and I get very annoyed when this isn't reciprocated. However, for a good part of my career I had to work remotely from abroad, and this not only halved my wages but locked me out of a lot of more lucrative opportunities. So, although I am a perfectly nice person, it was "as if" I didn't have the soft skills required, and I had to sell myself on skill alone - delivering working code in abnormally short amounts of time. I even wrote a programming language to help with rapid prototyping. So when I hear that skills are losing their market value, I head for the door.

Its always a bluff to talor the resume to every company and simply not possible when the entry level position needs 3+ yrs of experience . If you're in programming you should be able to automate most of it; hell, google chrome will automate most for you with just autofill. If you can't do even that then maybe you're in the wrong profession.

Sometimes you just have to use what you have to get to where you want. In 2024 there are so many resources and platforms to offer your services on. And then, when you’re doing it with a team of people, you can be highly productive and profitable. I think the industry shift is forcing people to be creative. There are a few people i personally know that taught themselves how to code, and make well over six figures doing contract work, just from knowing Python/JUCE.
Endless funds are over pal, so is entrepreneurship for the masses.

It's not even that there's not enough job postings. It's that recruiters and team managers are becoming WAY too picky and are requiring everything under the sun to even get looked at.
The top engineers know concepts and can adapt to other technologies with that knowledge. But recruiters are becoming too conservative because companies are losing money and can't afford to make the wrong choice. I think this stems strongly from the cost of living.

Just a small correction. At min 3:44, the graph showed that the most affected group were those aged 30-40 (~47%) while the second most affected were those aged 20-30 (~35%). This suggests that more senior devs were getting sacked than junior devs.

Garbage advice, there's not enough hours in the day to work on leetcode, do freelance work/portfolio projects and find 10 to 20 positions at your level that happen to use the same tech stack (that we have to write unique resumes and cover letters for), learn new technologies. This is the linkedIn sort of hustle culture that places all the responsibility on individuals rather than talking about how are we going to get through this market, how did the market get this bad, companies that have been doing layoffs should be shamed etc.

Literally this week one of our students just landed a job as a react developer - something that is so “unlikely.” It isn’t a hustle culture. It’s simple steps that are proving to work.
As a web developer, this skill is going to continue taking a nap for at least 1.5 years. Not my tailored resume, not my 20 job applications a day that gave me the job I have right now; it's the number of contacts on my phone, That's it: you know people, you get jobs.
It'll take a while to come back, so I highly recommend people not going all in, just keep an eye on trend, but do other things to put food on the table.

I graduated in Electronic Engineering back in 2020. I got hired from off campus back in 2021. I only knew HTML, CSS and a little JS that I thought to learn to get Software developer job. Luckily one company was hiring during COVID. I applied, passed the computer based exam. Got mail for technical round. Just after 10min of technical round and 5 min of HR, I got my first job. I was really surprised 😮. Although they pay was average, I never thought any company will hire me. I was so dipressed few months back but I kept pushing myself to learn about Web Dev. It really helped me. Now I have 3 years of experience and I got promoted last month with good pay. I'm so happy 😁.
Get a security clearance with the government and work for a defense company. Otherwise your job will be outsourced to India or replaced by AI.

I've been programmer since 1998 ( 26 years how eh ), I went through Java ( early days ), COBOL, LISP, Fortran, SQL , PL SQL, ASP NET, CSS, Assembly , and whatnot , and of course C/C++ ( still using it today ) ... my 2cents why programmers are the last to lose their jobs .. passing knowledge as programmer is very rare and very hard, i.e. every new person picking coding as their future will go through the same mistakes and solve the same problems over and over as the experience one, this is just the reality ,demand for programmers ( good ones ) only goes up ... and last but not least, what is good programmer, for me is the one that has curiosity, drive to create and desire continue and not give up when is hard ( i.e. bug to fix takes alot of time to find , so one has to improvise )
Programming is actually just part of creating software which is the product of software engineering process. In fact, not everyone has a knack for working as software engineer. Every engineer must be an analytical type of mind and should get to grips well with first principles of the trade, with that level of competency, learning languages, frameworks ... is just a matter of need and/or interest in a life long course of continuous learning.
IMO, most of those who are coding now is not really software engineer. There's simply too much excess in tech to carry on. That may be one of the reasons causing current wave of massive tech layoffs.
But you get valued for the work experience that you have. You know how to solve and translate to a new language much easier than a newer dev. This is more of cause of concern for new dev or fresh grads because they'll be replaced by the mid level devs being fired and being rehired than the new devs. It is the same as: I bought a house in 90s, why can't you buy a house now? when housing prices are 2x that it was back then and the house has depreciated in quality (ie it's older by 20 years).
I'm sorry but the fact is that for many companies, the job application process can take several hours. It is simply not possible to send 10-20 applications per day. 5-10 maybe.

If you cant send out 20 job applications a day as a programmer, then you need to find another field to be in.
I have yet to see a single job application that requires more than 10 minutes to complete. Maybe there is some senior level developer one that actually submitting code for a problem but most don't even do that.
In my opinion the job market is saturated and many programmers from India and China are operating remotely on western markets. Especially in the states where is no language barrier.
@RajinderYadav This is not true in USA. It's very easy to outsource work to India and China and in fact it simplifies the paperwork. Most companies use offshore contractors like Infosys or Wipro they don't hire offshore directly.

I can't lie, this is a bit discouraging. I'm mid-level and was laid off last summer. I've had 1 interview. ONE! Several recruiters have reached out then ghosted. I'm struggling to keep up with requirements. I might have to become serious with pivoting into data science. I don't hear about them being laid off and I want to work with numbers more anyways.
Data science got hit just as hard if, not harder than SWE. Data engineering roles seem to have faired a bit better.

I'm 36 and looking to switch my career from a firefighter to a programmer but it's so hard to even get an interview after applying to so many open positions. I always have this fear in the back of my head that if i leave my currnt job for something in tech, ill get let go and be screwed.
And I'd always say to anybody if one doesn't succeed in the tech field and STILL have a hard time finding a job no matter what you do and no matter how great your resume is, etc. but you still need a job, you can always come drive a bus. It's where if you got a CDL (where you might have to study a bit, but it isn't hard to get. And it's like a driving car and/or driving for Uber). In my field there is no competition in landing a job; my field is actually UNDERSATURATED; there's hardly any hoops to jump through in getting job unlike in tech. Plus, the it's great pay, great benefits, you get treated with respect and not treated like you're just a number, you won't have to compete with people, you won't have to worry about A.I., bad economy, or none of that. Plus, it's fun traveling around! Driving a bus can be as fun as playing a video game. And I don't work that many hours either. In fact, I get 5 hours breaks each day and on my break, THAT'S when I do things in tech like make (or play) video games/develop websites; I go out to my favorite restaurant, or do whatever else I want to do, or I'd just go to sleep until it's time to work again. Plus, I get lots of days of and my job is EASY!! Days off?? I just came back from a week in Mexico!!! And I'm planning to go to Thailand soon too. So, this is something else to think about too if you get tired of all of the hoopla, trials, tribulations, doormat treatment that which nobody deserves in tech!

nice video - but i think you left out a really important variable which is how many people are trying to become programmers. imo programming (due to the ease of access) is facing the opposite problem as the medical industry: over-saturation. ive heard this from several people, computer science programs in several schools have become very large because many kids are expecting to graduate with a bachelors degree and immediately get a high paying job. unfortunately this no longer seems to be the case :(

Too much demand back here and will be worse if the future. Higher demand for workers doesn't mean a higher chance of getting into. The number of employees will be 3x-5x higher who want to themselfs get into. The 25% of difference is too low for that. Maybe it's better there if it will be at least 75% or even 125%? The salary is averaged for the existing number of employees, that is, in this case the, percentage of average earnings for the employee falls.
And the saddest thing is that the requirement for special skills from junior employees will only become more complex and make to do a senior developer work just to get an entry-level salary.

To sponsor an H1B you need to pay the person the same as an American and usually higher so not really. Also, it's capped at 65k a year (for all professions) which is nothing.

I've 20 years experience in the field and haven't been able to find work for over a year now... apparently 20 to 100 applicants per job posting.
I would like to see data on how these layoffs overlap with other market data such as fed rates, market caps etc. In other words, how was the market performing quantitatively during this period and how can we decide when the market is doing well enough to consider prospective job openings for tech. That's something that almost nobody on the web is taking into consideration.

Some good advice, but too much propaganda. Yes, AI will and is replacing programmers. Software jobs pay more than farm jobs so the tractor comparison is flawed.
With how the market is playing out, it no longer feels worth it to get into the field. Not only do you have the hurdle of getting an interview, acing the interview, landing the job, but now you'll also have the hurdle of not getting fired or replaced in the future by emerging technologies or outsourcing.
Years ago, CS WAS the safe path to a great and long career, but now there's just too much fear and it's apparent corporate greed has taken over. If you genuinely like CS then go ahead and pursue it, but don't expect the same 1337 pay and work/life balance as how it was in the past.
While it is true that AI won't be taking over (anytime soon, at least), it HAS taken over a good amount of entry level positions. From a business perspective, it makes more sense to get rid of a junior that you're paying 60k/year and bumping a senior's pay by 10-20k while giving him/her a ChatGPT 4o subscription. What's the senior going to do? Quit? Ok bye! Let's look at this list of 10,000 applicants that just applied in the last hour.

You said sending 10 -20 jobs per day, I wonder how can you do it? Every company they need you to register, fill-in the same information that on your resume already, put a cover letter. That takes me ~25 mins per application. So 2 application would be 1 hour. If you have classes and other staff to do, that is a lof of time.

His take on making emphasis on real projects is good, I like that, but people are always demeaning degrees without realizing that getting a degree involved acquiring problem solving, abstract concept analysis, and critical thinking skills, that's what you get out of your degree, of course it's not going to give you all the specific skills that you need for a job, but people need to stop shitting on college majors just because, trust me when I tell you that the difference in the quality of the work of someone coming out of a bootcamp, and someone with an actual degree is very noticeable, and there will always be a skill gap between these two individuals assuming that they have the same amount of natural talent and that they are putting in the same amount of effort

This is what happened, and don't listen to what this guy says, because it isn't what really occurred. Maybe half the layoffs are because of a bubble, the other half is because activist investors demanded higher profitability, and CEOs listened. When interest rates rose, companies came under pressure because activist investors could point and say, hey I can get 5% or more if I just loan the money out or buy government treasuries. Also, half of the bubble related layoff, has already been hired back either at a lower salary or (more commonly) by outsourcing the department to places such as India. This is what happens in the United States, because the Federal Reserve protects the dollar from massive inflation, and it kills opportunities in the United States, and encourages opportunity abroad where workers make 1/10 what U.S. workers do (yet somehere live nearly equivalently). This market manipulation (it isn't capitalism to use a government monopoly to set a rate), has plagued the U.S. workforce. But it protects the people who can vote with big campaign contributions. It also protects some retiree savings accounts. But it displaces Americans right and left, and creates a dog-eat-dog work environment, which tech workers are experiencing (but all other non-unionized industries have been experiencing for decades).
The Federal Governmnet isn't protecting anything. They caused the inflation by printing Trillions of dollars the past three years.

I wish I was able to tell these things to my younger self, but definitely do lots and LOTS of projects. Practice, practice, practice, and sometimes look at tutorials only when you need to. Use all the free time you can to create interesting and complex projects that you enjoy doing, because once you're an adult, more often than not you'll be worrying more about paying the bills than finishing your side projects. If you can't think of anything to build, there's a good list of projects that ThePrimeTime covered in his video (search Projects Every Programmer Should Try by ThePrimeTime on UA-cam), but basically:
- Text editor (build the UI from scratch)
- 2D game - Space Invaders
- Compiler
You'll learn lots of things with just the first one. Once you're able to do these projects comfortably, you'll already have the right mindset to work on any project on any software dev fields, not just full-stack, so it'll be easier for you to pivot if a particular field is not to your liking/bad job offers. One other thing, try limiting your project timeline within 2-3 months. It's easier to slack off once you work on a project more than that. Once you get better at programming and you've established your workflow, try limiting them to 1 month or less instead. And also, set the features you want to be in the v1.0 release ahead of time, and only focus on those, so you can avoid feature creep. The important thing is to finish projects, not to just start them.

IOT is not a skill, Robotics is a huge, mathematically complicated area of knowledge. Lots of useless AI projects are now indevelopment so that's probably a bit of a bubble.

What you're saying is try harder not smarter and that's a recipe for failure. The real solution is to move from coding to software engineering in specific area and then to higher level position like team lead, architecture, CTO.

I have not noticed any slowdown in the industry myself, there are lots and lots and lots of jobs. They just want to make sure they hire qualified people and they are well aware that the chatGPT world allows folks to destroy coding interview tests which is a concern for most folks.

This video aged well with a few more announcements of layoffs... What people need to focus on is trying to be good at what they do and find out how to advertise it to employers effectively because that's the key to getting the dam job. While all these tips can help but everyone's journey is different and results are always different from a case by case basis unless you publish research on what actually gets you employed. Also the job market is fucken huge and software engineering makes up around 1-2 million people out of the 100 million (reported in 2022 by BLS) people employed so if things are not working out you can always try to move to a different profession completely that pays decently.
I wouldn't also lean on the statistics that the BLS publish because they can drop the ball hard. We had the Federal Reserve (Supposedly the smartist economists in USA) mess up inflation readings hard right after the pandemic which got us into this position of higher interest rates. But what do I know... I guess people want to told dreams can come true if you follow these steps even when it's statistically unlikely to net you a successful result. I feel like a lot of people of running into that saying "insanity is when your trying the same thing constantly and expecting a different result"
I work as a researcher and almost everybody in my department can and does some coding as part of their job. Programming is just a very useful skillset which has become overhyped and overrated, especially as a profession. Right now we use general purpose computational tools that are astronomical in cost. With the tremendous leaps taken by AI, I should be able to write with AI assistance in the near future, for example a specialized finite element code to solve a multi-physics coupled problem without having to hole myself up in a cave for 3 months. Already, I see my colleagues using chat gpt often in their work and these are PhDs. The mathematician in the next cubicle codes all the time in python, and he says chat gpt has been extremely helpful.
In the future, I see many professionals and companies developing their own custom applications with AI and this will further deplete the need for full time programmers.
I think you need to know a range of skills for most jobs and that’s already being seen

@@kzelmer when I was student and studied computer science there was no market for programmer in my country, no easy way to move to another country and no internet. My father thought that I would be unemployed. Now it’s almost 20 years since then. I never been unemployed and I enjoy what I’m doing.
So i graduated in a very bad time it seems. No wonder many of my classmates have been unable to find jobs. In dept, no jobs, going bankrupt. It's not ideal.
I myself got 2-years of industry experience and the knowledge to write high quality scalable code and fullstack RestAPI skills. Still companies don't even care to look at my portfolio, as they are exclusively looking for 5 or more years of experience. I get that companies want productivity, efficiency and speed and while I probably still lack on those fronts, it's a bit silly how much the focus seems to be in artifical time rather than skills and results.
Im 30 and im scared if any company would wanna take a chance on me as a recent grad. Thought i could turn m life around and do some good. went back to school, did the right thing. graduated with a 4.0GPA but hey man fuck life

well I'm 28 and did the same thing, found my first job last september as a software developer, did take me 9 months but would've been less if I kept applying and stopped getting demoralised whenever I got a rejection from a job I liked, I also built a portfolio alongside while I was looking

OK so if you are tailoring ea. resume to the company at hand, then you will obviously send out less resumes. that's the only problem i have with this video. Send out 100 per day copy/pasted and u won't even remember where u applied.
With all of your analysis in mind, I would like to know your opinion on my current state of options: Should I take Software Engineering (MEng) or should I take "Mathematics and Computer Science (MSci)". The only reason I have the second option is because of the greater depth it goes into but I am worried that it lacks on programming and other software engineering aspects necessary for jobs.
So the moral of the story is start your company........LOL its just as hard as getting a job...LOL
It's significantly harder. You will likely still find a job in this market, before you end up making any amount of comparable revenue with your own business (not even speaking about profits).

There are too many developers in most segments of the market. I need embedded developers, which are much harder to come by because so many people think C/C++ is old and stupid.
Expand your knowledge beyond the web and you will likely open a lot of doors.
I am in the same boat. It is almost impossible to get people for devices, embedded linux systems and applications.
