    They cheaped out on the box and binder. I wouldn’t have expected that. Makes you wonder if they’re growing too fast and not paying enough attention to quality.

      Totally agree. And I feel like they’ve lost their originality, everything seems to be from bits of other planner companies all in one.

    If you talk to EC company about the binder option, one easy way to fix your binder not closing is to put a hard plastic piece in the back that will help keep the pages where they are. Because they are using circle rings the pages get stuck in the back rings. If they used a D- ring, it would lay more flat naturally. I made binders for attorneys for years at a law firm, so that’s my useless knowledge I gained! Lol, but maybe it can help here. Thanks for the reviews and honest opinions!! Love EC.

    • @WithWonder

      Thanks for the tip! Maybe that's something they'll include in the future

    • @cheryllynn1913
      @cheryllynn1913 5 років тому

      That would help. However, the drawback to a D-ring binder is that you don't just turn the page, you have to lift the page up first then turn it...which isn't that big a deal, I guess😉

      @22angd 5 років тому

      Cheryl Richter - that’s a good point!

    • @somewhatmissing
      @somewhatmissing 5 років тому +1

      First thing I thought of was why didn't they use a D-ring. You aren't the only one! It isn't useless when you are constantly referring to your planner throughout the day! I use mine for work and had thought about the binder option so I could shove work related items and board meeting items directly into my planner without worrying I would lose them, but my OCD would win out against the O-ring vs. D-ring haha

    They borrowed the box concept from Emily Ley, the new monthly summary page from The Happy Planner, and the hexagon sheet in the back from Plum Paper. So underwhelmed with this year’s changes, but the Mohawk paper keeps me coming back like the sucker that I am. This was such a well done review, thank you for taking the time to do it.

      The hexagon thing is also a very significant part of the inkwell press and theirs has a specific purpose. EC just kind of threw it in there randomly lol. It just seems like a mashup of other planners but in the same... that paper sucks me in! Just still surprised they kept the coloring pages when I don’t genuinely know anyone that likes/uses them ? Maybe that’s just me tho 😂

      You know... You can just buy Mohawk paper and print whatever layouts you want. I buy Mohawk via smooth in 148 GSM (100#), custom cut to a 7x9 size, and I print my own layouts. It works for me, and it might be something to consider if the only thing you really love is the EC paper.

    This confirmed for me that this year I am going to switch to a plum paper planner and just use my EC interchangeable covers with it. You just get so much more options for customization with Plum paper and for a much better price.

    • @cindycarlson8748
      @cindycarlson8748 5 років тому +1

      I think the paper quality is better in the PP too! I just like the layouts in EC and there's something intriguing about using the "original", I guess. There's something that keeps sucking me back in, but then I stick it on a shelf and use my PP, even though it's frustrating because all of the stickers are slightly off in size.

    • @Misscutieful1
      @Misscutieful1 5 років тому +1

      Cindy Carlson that’s how I am too! The wow factor of the coil and covers keep pulling me back into EC 😩 but then I don’t use it as efficiently as I would other planners. I am planning to get PP’s new daily layout, I’ve been waiting for EC to drop one but sigh, no such luck

  • @PacificOcean17
    @PacificOcean17 5 років тому +11

    Thanks for your honest review of all items.
    I understand they wanted to keep their binder proprietary with their inserts, but it would have been cool to have it fit a 3 ring binder, A5, or maybe Mini Binder, so you can choose your own binder cover. I know some of these options would mean changing the insert size. Having a binder without tabs means everyone will be pulling their rings open, which may cause gapping over time.

    • @silverjade10
      @silverjade10 5 років тому +4

      The Carpe diem a5 and the Filofax finsbury a5 fit a 7x9 page (and I don't cut the punched edges off either). There's some overhang in the finsbury, but it still closes just fine.
      Sooo... They absolutely *could* have done the universal a5 punches. Because yeah, that binder is a hot mess. And that ring setup is ridiculous.

    I don't think that they will be able to fix the problem with having to pick up the binder and move the papers to completely close the binder. The reason you have to do that is the binder rings are attached to the middle part of the binder. All binders that have the rings in the middle has that issue as well as pages getting bent in the back. The only way for Erin Condren to fix that is to change the whole binder with the rings attached to the back cover. Which I doubt they will do before launch. I was really interested in buying the binder but now that I know that the binder rings are in the middle there is no way.

    • @Sarahr98998
      @Sarahr98998 5 років тому

      You’re right! When the rings are on the back, the middle and top can lay completely flat and then fold up and over. Good call

    • @pitbullmomplans
      @pitbullmomplans 5 років тому +2

      Or they need a page lifter for the back (like Foxy Fix has) but because the size is weird you couldn’t just buy one from Foxy, you’d have to wait until EC makes one and it’s probably gonna be $$$$.

    • @healthywithheather7920
      @healthywithheather7920 5 років тому

      I was thinking the exact same thing in regards to the placement of the rings. Why would they do that? They are a high end planner so use the high end features (we all know the cheapest binders have the rings in the centre).

    I feel like they could have solved the half hour issue by having a light dot grid in the column - just half the size of the hour box. Then, easy to split in half, or ignore.

  • @debbiestherapy
    @debbiestherapy 5 років тому +8

    I have in previous years loved my ec hourly. I will not be using it for 2020 with the changes to the hourly design. I needed the half hour markers and bigger box. I literally use it multiple times daily. I'm so glad the ruler changed as I would go through several over the year and they almost always lost teeth immediately. I always wished there was some basic option. I have mo interest in the stickers, plastic pouch, or the perpetual calendar and absolutely no interest in a BOX! Function wins over cute so back to basic I go. I'm a sad gal. 😥

  • @HautePinkFluff

    I’m sorry, but that box is going straight into the trash for me. The fact that we actually have to pay for it to get the planner is really annoying and I would rather have the vinyl pouch back. The worst part was changing the size of boxes on the monthly and weekly pages, so now all the planner sticker kits won’t fit. I kind of feel like it’s a slap in the face to all the long time supporters and the sticker shop owners who built their business while promoting the EC planner.

    • @PinkestGreen
      @PinkestGreen 5 років тому +28

      Vanessa Dugan yeah, I’m still trying to wrap my head around the fact that we don’t get the vinyl pouch, but our price point goes up... and in exchange we get a flimsy box. I just... don’t get the justification.

    • @glitterdust40
      @glitterdust40 5 років тому +7

      I can't agree with you more! I really hope I can tweak the kits I've hoarded from sticker shops to fit in 2020. I have a feeling I'll need white out - to make it work. I'm most puzzled about why a rounded bottom box was included on the vertical weekly. I'm not a fan of that look, but that's just my personal viewpoint as someone who uses sticker kits! I'll be anxious to see how other sticker planners adapt!

  • @amymerryman9330
    @amymerryman9330 5 років тому +72

    To be very frank....the binder option is not good and I guarantee that there is going to be a ton of quality control issues with it. They should wait to release it in until they can come up with something creative and well made. If they could come up with something like Day Designer does with their A5 size inserts and binders, I would love it. Imagine a quality filofax style binder with the fun and colorful EC inserts and it would be awesome.

    When I switched from an ARC system to EC, I missed the ability to move things around, add sections, etc so I was excited for the binder. But why would they choose those rings that NO ONE has a punch for? Smh. I’ll probably wait a year for them to work out the kinks before trying the binder.

    • @kcarter4737
      @kcarter4737 5 років тому +2

      I agree with Sarahr98998, why buy a binder when you cannot insert your own pages? For the past several years I have been pulling the coil off the EC, trimming the pages and then punching the pages using a disc bound punch so I can use the discs from TUL or Levenger. Disc bound gives you the option to customize; this binder does not. Maybe I will be finally switching to Happy Planner which is already disc bound for half the cost. . .

    I used an hourly version this year and have often wished for more hours in the day. But I also use the half-hours all the time. I would have cut the blank space at the bottom of each day.

  • @nicolestauffer6751
    @nicolestauffer6751 5 років тому +1

    Jen I feel that you always have the most comprehensive planner reviews! :) You asked for thoughts about the hourly and I have been an hourly gal since it first launched and an EC through-and-through gal prior to that. I'm very disappointed in this year's updates. Re: the hourly, I always used the remaining blank lines at the bottom of each day (if I needed to) to give me basically up to 9 pm. So I didn't really need a longer day as others have voiced (I'd LOVE to see just lines vs. an hourly option!). I DO live in the half-hours though, so that missing formatting might sadly be a deal-breaker for me this year. I am not a fan of the shaded portion at the bottom of the weekly spread and in the notes section of the monthly spread either, and would have preferred it just have remained white. I'm also not a fan of the hexagon change instead of the blank box, though I don't mind the monthly calendar view in the weekly spread. I'm a colorful gal, so I do love the theme and the sleek look of this year's "year-at-a-glance" page. I also appreciate the added focus/goals page before the monthly spread, but wish the tab was still on the month view so you could open right to it.
    In the end, I wish I could marry the customizable aspect of Plum Paper Planners with the color schemes, themes, and scripted quotes of Erin Condren. I like the skeleton part of the EC updates, but really don't like the guts. As a homeschooling mom, I'm looking more towards Plum Paper for next year because it's very-nearly completely customizable for both a Life Planner and Homeschool Planner option, which is something EC doesn't currently offer. Plus, now that PP has also partnered with Mohawk Paper, it's hopefully going to give a comparable feel. But I'm sad just the same. As someone on IG put it, it's like a break-up that you knew was coming, but have been putting off until after Christmas. :)

    My dream planner would be the same as yours except hourly with the half hour increments.
    I really dislike that the stickers coordinate with version of planner you get. I like my planner so I can decorate according to my mood which is sometimes neutral and sometimes colorful. So now I’ll be stuck with the neutral stickers because I don’t think I can deal with the colorful planner.

    Jen could you do a video on your storage of your planners and what you plan on doing with them for future? For example, do you treat them like a personal diary that you don’t want anyone to see, or more a scrapbook of the year that you won’t mind sharing with your family as you get older x

    Again, Jen, you always keep it real, which I certainly appreciate! Totally agree with the points you have made. First of all, that box is so flimsy, nothing like the great box the pens come in. I don’t know if it was already said, but the issue with the pages getting caught in the back is typical for ringbound planners. You could put a thicker card stock in the back to lift the pages when closing! BUT as you said, the punching is special and in my eyes that defeats the whole purpose of a ringbinder! What’s the point if you can’t punch your own pages!

I'm not keen on the shaded boxes for notes in the colourful at all but love everything else. Love the planny pack too and the pens. Not sure about the binder, I agree, they should invest in doing something like Kikki K or even like the on the go but with rings, that would be pretty. Thanks for sharing! I agree with Loving the Happy Planner! Mambi‘ s quality seems to be improving each year while it looks like EC’s quality is diminishing. So sad to see. I don’t mind paying the extra $ if the quality is there but they went super cheap in the binder box and the new loose leaf binder cover. At least their paper quality is still good but I don’t like the direction they are heading. So unfortunate.

    Love your reviews they are detailed and on point. Thank you. Now about the planner, I am so disappointed they eliminated the 30 min increments. I use them for my business appointments to keep me organized. I loved the EC planners because the coil and so colorful which is difficult to find for hourly planners. 🙁 Jen if you have any recommendations of a planner that still has 30 min increments for appointments please let me know. You are my planner queen and I found EC because of you.

    Great video. As an avid eclp planner user I’m not loving the not so neutral color way. I select the neutral so I don’t have to worry about matching planner kits smh. I was also hoping for an a5 ish planner binder. Sad to say I’m going to look around this year and I don’t like the connection of the vertical boxes either nor do I like the rounded corners

    I have always loved EC vertical. I am in Canada. The cost of shipping is as much as the planner (almost) and we pay a 20.00 CAN. tarriff on them. I love watching unboxing and just about cry that I can no longer afford to have a $160.00 planner! I do not like the binder, but do love the coiled vertical. I love your reviews. Real life, admire your thoughts.

    I am liking the changes for 2020. Her paper is fantastic and now we're getting two additional pages each month! I like that we are getting a box, because I overstuff my planner, so it is an excellent addition. I would still have liked the plastic pouch to be included as that is how I carry my stickers. This is the first neutral planner that I am considering purchasing as I really like the look of those monthly and weekly layouts. I was excited when the binder was announced, but am a bit skeptical with the ring configuration. Excellent review as always. Thank you!

    I always look forward to this review! I love the colorful design this year. I agree that my ideal planner would have colorful extra pages (the quotes, etc.) and neutral functional pages. I’m also disappointed with the quality of the box. The sleeve looks cheap. A regular box top would have been awesome. Thanks for the preview!

    I LOVE your reviews! I am SO glad you included the binder review, I had seen the sneak peeks, but now I know that I too, will wait a year to see how it all works out. BUT I am 100% on board with the colorful/vertical version. I DO love the boxes and I will buy extras so I can store past year's (Hoping I can mix it up between the colorful and the neutral as I have always struggled with how to store my past EC's. In 2018-2019 I did NOT go with EC but this year (2019/2010) I am coming back. I absolutely LOVE the pages before each month and for me, I actually LOVE the colorful sidebars and bottom sections of the weekly. and the accessories, the Planny Pack WILL be mine! Just saying! :) Thanks so much for your attention to detail!

    It is also weird that the binder is in the woven pattern on the the inside instead of the new pattern. This is the same problem I had when I ordered the plain binder they used to have in the standard ring with pages and stuff getting stuck in the back

    That binder is cheap looking with cheap construction, with a funky ring configuration. It's obviously done to make more money selling a separate hole puncher (hey it's business, but it will be viewed as greedy, IMO). When she first started, she sold the pages without any holes at all (as an option). You could punch the pages to match your own binder--it was great! I absolutely love both color schemes--the bright and the muted (cause we know it's not neutral). Great review as usual, Jen.

    Thanks so much for your review! I buy 2 planners every year, one for work & one for home/everything else. Because of the changes they made to the hourly, I’m going to have to switch companies to one that offers hourly in a “not as pretty, but still functional” for me format, because my work planner is planner peace. I’ve never used anything other than an EC, aside from a brief stint in a TN, bujo, or Filofax before going right back to EC. They squeezed in 2 more hours, but with the addition of the thicker margin & date at the top & the thicker shaded bottom box, have actually crammed everything into a smaller planning space. Their own “event label” stickers are too big for the time slots. I’m also not getting an hourly for my personal planner because I don’t want to have to “make it work”, so I’m going back to the OG EC planner, the colorful vertical, because i feel like those changes aren’t as drastic. It’s extremely disappointing as a customer because I love so much about this year’s theme only to have it be “ruined” by the functional part of the planner. First world problems, for sure. 😂 I hope they offer an option next year for the original hourly layout. I think the binder is a joke, but I really hope the people who get one love it. I’m happy there is at least an option for it, even though I think it could have had better execution.

    Thank you for the detailed video! I wish, instead of a binder or “system” which many of the planner companies put out, that they would just sell a5 sized inserts for Filofax or Kikki-K type planners. I could even deal with punching the pages myself. I have actually been uncoiling an EC planner for the past few years and trimming and hole punching the pages to put in my a5 Filofax. It’s the best of both worlds for me. I was so excited about the binder but of course they have the 8 rings already prepunched which won’t work for me. I could washi over the holes, I guess but that’s a lot of pages and a lot of washi! Ha. Anyway, I will keep on keeping on uncoiling. I do love the kaleidoscope design, very pretty.

    Thank you so much for giving a comprehensive view. I am with you in being disappointed in their binder system. I was hoping that we would have a choice of sizes and inserts-much more customization than with the coiled planners. I am really liking the neutral layouts and I am usually a colorful vertical gal. Thanks to you the 2020 planner will be the 5th year that I use an EC LP. You were the first person to introduce me to EC back in 2015 on UA-cam. I’m excited and hoping that May 6th will get here quickly!

    I should have watched your video before purchasing! I have used the hourly and works well with my work and family schedule. I'm super frustrated to see they took out the half hour line. I would not have gotten this layout if I would have noticed when purchased. My fault for not looking into the changes.
    With the price increase I will need to look at other options out there. I have always loved EC, the coil and the paper quality. I'm disappointed about some of the quality on other items that I've seen in some videos. I bought a zippered planner folio last year and was super disappointed in the quality of that. We will see. I'm going to continue with EC life planner this year, but will be questioning it next year.

    awesome review! I believe that the Erin Condren team was trying to please everyone that they mixed stuff up and got a bit overwhelmed. I personally like the binder, maybe the binder style that size would be good for someone perhaps in school...it kind of gives be old school high school vibes! As for the planner in the binder, it’s a bit over stuffed. So you won’t have that smoothness flipping the pages. Maybe a 3 ring binder would be best for that size.

    This is by far the best video I've seen reviewing all the new EC launch day planners! I am lovin the kaleidoscope patterns and accessories, however I was really excited for the binder, and very disappointed. However it is the first one and might wait another year or two and hope they tweak for the better! I'm also kind of upset that they went up on a lot of the pricing!!! This girl can't afford too much however I do think they make some beautiful coiled planners! And I was thinking about switching to an hourly to manage my time better however I don't like that they took out the half hours and line! Thanks again! 💙

    I'm looking forward to getting my new ECLP. I mostly use the Teacher Planner (it's been a life saver as a first year teacher), and it's a personal preference, but I wish when they do the roll outs for the PR sample, the teacher planner was standard. I'm just giddy to look at the changes!

    I kinda feel the same, I would love to have the colorful version for the accent pages and stuff, but then do the weekly in the neutral. Since most of the sticker shops won't have stickers that fit in the planner anymore, I think have the neutral would just make it so much more functional
