The price of gasoline in Singapore for 1 liter is 2.3 dollars, while the price of 1 kwh is only 23 cents
1 liter of gasoline can cover 10 km
1 kwh can cover 8 km
If driving 1800 km/month
Then the cost for
Internal combustion is $414/month
For EV only $51.75/month
And for one year internal combustion will cost $4,968/year

Used EV batteries from China will hit the secondary market first and will not yet go to any landfill. Here in the Philippines, there's a huge market for used LifePo4 batteries used as powerwalls/battery backup in homes and used for maybe another 10 years. I still hope that sooner than later, recycling will be the norm in a large scale.
sad to say it can't overall its cheaper to just produce a new one than say recycle a used one, simply put it doesn't make sense economically for it go widespread.

As always the true answer is not as easy as EV have no tailpipe emissions. Who would have thought? I would actually like to see a EV vs hybrid comparison as Toyota has come under fire for backing hybrid and hydrogen. Dispite what some people say the future is not clear at this point though obviously things do have to change.

When we convert to electric cars, where are we going to get the electrical power? We are not allowed to use coal, gas, nuclear power, or hydro by damming rivers. Will we be allowed to open new mines for the metals we will need to built windmills and solar panels?
Build good cycling roads/routes/lanes for cyclist, so that it would not endanger their lives when cycling on the road. This way, you would also encourage more people to use the bicycle as a mode of transport.

Weather is too hot for this mode of transportation to catch on unlike in temperate countries

Zero emission at tail pipe, is what they meant because electrical car has no tail pipe.
No such zero emission. Electric cars do not directly release CO2, but the process of making electric car components such as: batteries, electricity itself, etc... do release CO2 in the process. Once the batteries are dead, the processes of recycle them release hugh amount of CO2.
It is a step in the right direction but not a total green as some may claims.
When you say an ICE emmits 89gr CO2 then for electric car is Zero. If you want to include electricity production emissions then you should add petrol production and distribution emissions. Fuel doesn't magically appear at the tank.
If you drive quite a lot in the cities, the life cycle carbon foot print is significantly less, it's the right step yes. Energy have to come from somewhere & 80% operating efficiency is dam high compared to ICE cars of ~30% . .

Electric is still way better.
No engine oil, no spark plug etc. All those part contributing on co2 from making to distribution to your gas/diesel car.

Nice point...but in defence of cars, legs can't cover long Miles on the regular, ul succumb to arthritis and injuries. We need all these options to take place, mileage specific additions like walking on short lanes is the 4th side they missed 😁🙏

Start converting all current taxis and PHVs to full electric first. Following which, buses and industrial truck (If any). Wondering what’s the combined percentage of all these combined compared to the 1 million vehicle currently on road. Since self owned vehicle does not clocked high mileage.
There is an estimate of near 1 million vehicle of all cat and types at the moment. PHV stands at an estimate of 65,000 while taxis estimated at 15,000.

Zero carbon is true, but how the battery is made is worst than vehicle emits carbon. Factory waste, diesel and oil used just to make the battery
I worked in a battery recycling plant in Alberta Canada 30 years ago when I was a kid. It was a very shitty job and I still have scars on legs from where the battery acid would splash up over my rubber boots. The skin in those areas also grew back extremely thin. It was a poor paying job given the low safety and intensive work. We slung batteries by hand all day long. The arms stayed awfully strong though! Lol

Hydrogen is really the way to go if it can be produced with lower cost in the future, the by product being water. No dangerous lion batteries and then recycling of them to worry about, plus the mining of the lithium also is a major issue.

There is no need to change everyone to electric. That creates crazy amount of waste.
How about giving a slight coe discount to extend cars more than 10 years, to reduce waste. It’s a lot of carbon footprint to manufacture vehicles, carbon you cannot break even by changing to electric vehicles
Not all cars goes to the scrapyard after 10 years, some are exported as secondhand vehicles
Cars more than 10 years are the main culprit of emissions. The combustion engine are less efficient and tats why u see the black smog emits from older vehicles.
I don't think that everyone will be _forced_ to change to an electric car, just that at some point all brand-new car sold will have to be electric.
ICE cars will then slowly fade away from the road as each one reaches the end of its life.
@Jimmy Edward it ought to get more expensive. Anyway if you don’t own your own charger, EV charging will cost as much as petrol eventually, at least in Singapore

Compare that versus improved fuel economy. Even if you DOUBLE your fuel economy, and thus halve the consumption of petrol, that’s not much savings. A 10 year old car using half the petrol for 150,000km (let’s assume 15km/L to 30km/L) uses 5000 litres of petrol less. Do you think you can recoup the cost of manufacturing and transporting a car with 5000 litres worth of petrol/carbon?
But wait. New cars don’t halve fuel consumption every five to ten years, do they? You’ve been green washed into thinking that changing car is good for the environment. No it’s not. It’s good for the ECONOMY.
If only someone can come up with a technology that can rejuvenate dead batteries to usable again. It will be a huge industry and more environmentally friendly.

If only consider vehicle itself emission Yes. If include battery production No. Electricity production also has carbon emission for supply to the stations. Looks like a large amount of land also required for the charging stations. Then there is also opportunity cost of waiting for charging or in queue for charging station. Looks like maybe practical for only public bus. Else hybrid or hydrogen should be better bet.

great episode! makes me tick as an environmentalist living in pasir ris. i'd like to say nuclear, if only nuclear does not have a huge risk. hydrogen imo would be better for PHVs as no way can they cutoff a passenger's journey jsut because "no more energy".

A full charge from solar energy allows both the taxi and bus each about 300km milage. For a bus it's believable that it can handle a day's load since it's going thru a planned route. But for a taxi, it's impractical to be confined by that number. Not sure how the taxi system works over there. A 300km milage a day isn't going to make much money obviously. If the taxi is shared by two or even 3 drivers, there simply isn't time to complete any turnovers.
When solar energy was first introduced onto wrist watches in the 1980s, it left an impression that it's performance is less than impressive. Obviously 40s have passed, i think it still doesn't prove to be any breakthrough. They need the sun, windmills, and did I hear nuclear power plant to create that energy for the cars and buses? Don't forget there are seasons in China where there isn't wind and much sun. I refuse to believe coal isn't used. I also refuse to believe the amount of waste these cars and buses can equate to when they rapidly deteriorate given they way their quality assurance is. What happens after that? They simply build more of the same thing because that can! End result? Wastage and pollution again. It's a vicious cycle. This will take at least another 40 years to see it's true positive effect of zero carbon emissions world
What about freight? Long haul trucks, trains, planes? The problem with EV is that it doesn't address long haul transport. Massive online shopping and we're focused on forcing every day drivers to buy an EV which is more expensive than a gas car? Should we tell everyone to eat cake too while they're at it?

### AT CAR PRODUCTION ###
The production of ICE cars might cause more CO2 than an efficient EV cars such as Tesla. ICE cars have lots more parts than an EV cars.
### ENERGY SOURCE ###
Petrol, Diesel, Gas and Co are not re-usable and thus considered as consumable. The exploration, drilling, production and refinery cause a lot of CO2 as well. Singapore does not produce oil, but does the refinery and shipped the raw oil & gas from other countries. Not to mention the CO2 from any accident such as oil spills and etc.
For EV, the Battery is re-usable. The source of power (the consumable part) can be produced from renewable energy such as Sun, Water, Wind, and waste recycling.
### AT USE & MAINTENANCE ###
EV cars have less parts than ICE cars. As benchmark, take Tesla cars. #1 The brakes from a Tesla car last about more than 4 times than the typical ICE cars. The REGEN due to 1-pedal driving reduce the usage of brake. #2 There is no more periodic change of the motor oil. #3 With less parts, it means less components to change. The productions of these components produce also CO2.
### EFFICIENCY / ENERGY LOSS & OTHERS ###
Please consider the efficiency level of transforming the energy source to the movement. How efficient is the transformation from the fuel to the movement in ICE car vs the transformation from electricity from battery to the movement in EV? The development of ICE has been plateaued for more than 10 years. The motor efficiency improvement development that cause the false practice such as the DIESEL-GATE from all the car manufacturers. People these days should have realised how these scandals made for the sake of profits and polluting the air where we lived and our planet.
On the other hand, the journey to sustainable energy is starting and will improve with times.
Getting it to ZERO is a utopia. Even a bicycle is produced with a CO2 footprint.

there are 1 million cars on the roads in Singapore that run on combustion engine. Where will they get the energy from to manufacture another 1 million electric vehicles for Singapore? hint - "Oil" And those "electric vehicles will still run on tyres made from more oil and paints resins plastics pvc finishing and seats made from even more oil - Just as there isn't enough space on bus top to install solar panels to power bus there's also much less space for solar panels to power 1 million cars in Singapore so in the end they will again fall back on using oil to generate the electricity for you to tap at charging stations for your shiny electric cars that you thought was zero emission. Siao right?

You are breathing out carbon dioxide when you cycle, and the methane from your poo poo. So is low emission and not zero.

Switching vehicles is one part of the solution and a very important one. The other part is converting our grid to be 100% clean energy is the other and much more difficult.
The advantage of switching cars to electric is that you can do so one by one or in small batches. Converting fossil fuels to green energy means not only building all the nuclear, wind, water and solar energy plants we need but more importantly closing those coal and gas plants.
Regardless of we like it or not (we don't) we live in a capitalist world and money is more important than our lives and or future so the only way we will see any change if we find ways to make clean energy cheaper than fossil fuels. This is of course going to be difficult as the fossil fuel industry has a lot of money and has had decades to lobby for connections in government.

The way I see it, hydrogen is more useful as an energy storage product, just like how OIL reserves dont exist in all countries, not all countries are suitable for power generation thru renewables. So in the future countries with excess energy produced by renewable energy can convert the excess into hydrogen using hydrolysis of water and export the hydrogen to countries not suitable for power generation thru renewables. A lot of companies are working on hydrogen-powered gas turbines that can burn 100% hydrogen that will enable existing electrical infrastructure in Singapore to be need less modification and yet greatly reduce our emissions
Can someone tells her the frame and all parts of her bicycle uses large amounts of coals and other heat produced energy that emit more if not as much carbons to the air? Human when exhale, emits carbon too sadly. The more populated this world is, the more carbon emissions we produces, and we haven't talks about all sorts of trashes and Electronics toxic wastes...
Simple answer is Yes. EVs are zero emission vehicles.
It depends on the source of electricity used to charge the EV, but yeah it provides the opportunity for it to be clean.
@@hssssssssssss Absolutely. Not only vehicles but also other daily activities we do like taking MRT, using a washing machine, charging a mobile phone etc produce CO2 continuously around the clock if we still rely on fossil fuel/natural gas!

Now, although this is definately a Zero carbon emission form of transport (at point of use), it is definately NOT Zero Carbon from the point of inseption, manufacture, distribution, supply & disposal!!!!
Here in the UK, we have a large cycling comunity. However many of our bicycles are manufactured in China & shipped halfway around the world (by Oil Powered ships!!!), before being assembled here in the UK. NO WAY is this Zero Carbon!!!
If a Bicycle is Truly Zero Carbon, then by the SAME measure - So is a Battery EV!!!!!!
What many reports fail to compare, is the TOTAL Carbon footprint across all transportation. For ICE vehicles, this will be the design, manufacture, distribution, useage & disposal of vehicles across their entire lifespan. Add to that, the complete lifecycle of the Petrol/Diesel and Oils used to power & lubricate all ICE vehicles (eg, the extraction of oil right through to the burning of fuel and the disposal of waste oils!!).
Only when the complete manufacture & supply chain, followed by proper disposal (recycling), of vehicles go to fully carbon Zero, can we even contemplate our vehicles being Zero carbon!!
In the meantime, by 'reducing' the useage of Fossil Fuels, EV's are way more carbon efficient. Maybe not Carbon Zero, but ceretainly a massive improvement :-)

Regarding the bicycle used. It looks like the seat is made from Plasic, also the reflectors, maybe the basket, plus may other parts!!!
So, since plastic is made from Fossil Oils - This is definately NOT Carbon Zero :((
I feel as though we are doing a lot to get to the point where the carbon footprint of an EV and other things are getting better. Yes. We can and should do so much more.
I plan to buy an EV next year and I'm thinking about a solar charging solution for it. But I still feel that as we strive to get to as close to 0 emissions we will discover so many non impact ways to achieve it. I'm not sure I'll see it in my lifetime but I have hope that we'll get there. The alternative is to do nothing thinking that what we've been doing is satisfactory and I just don't think it is.
Covid lock down and less vehicles on the road we saw a rise in positive air quality around the world so we know one of the biggest contributors to the bad air quality was our vehicles on the road. So we know and we have to do better.
Zero emissions are impossible, think of everything that goes into production of EV or any other product regardless of type. Production it will always produce C02 somewhere.
This debate on controlling carbon emission caused by vehicles using fossil fuels has been going on for decades without a solution. What keeps us from totally abandoning fossil fuel technology? Many developed countries like USA or EU are blocking the advance of EV technology. The US,Russian oil majors control fossil fuel production as well as all the technology to produce existing vehicles. You can see how politicians have influenced policies to support oil producing countries while blocking legislation to control climate change, a direct effect of carbon emission and global warming. Battery technology and fuel cell technology have made vast strides. But stock market investors are sceptical that EVs are good investment when compared to established fossil fuel technology. The cost of totally replacing existing vehicles with EV technology is daunting. What will you do with all this waste? EVs are good for tbe environment. But the Shylocks who control World finance care little for the environment.

Making these EV's is expensive due to the materials that have to be used, Mining of the materials that have to be used for motors and batteries, these EV's are expensive to buy the general public ok so they save on petrol and who gets subsidised, ONLY THOSE WHO CAN AFFORD THEM.

It produces tons of CO2 to make these cars. But it is possible zero emission to charge them though. We should invest much more in carbon capturing. Cut down less trees, and plant much more.

They are getting better at it all the time. EV are dumb too because the only thing that produces more CO2 in many countries is making electricity. Every time your transmit electricity you get losses. You loose 12% when you transform voltage. You loose 10% converting to DC etc etc. You are robbing Peter to pay Paul. The only thing we should be concentrating on is electricity generation. Fix that and then EV make sense. We are mostly virtue signalling at this point.
@Jimmy Edward we could argue all day about numbers and the truth is hard to pin down. Electric has some advantages but hydrogen has some too. Back whatever you wish but I am pretty sure the future will be a mixture of batteries and hydrogen fuel cells depending on application. Hydrogen ICE future is doubtful.
Where do used batteries go? The ocean duh.

Hydrogen CAN be generated by renewable energy (Green Hydrogen), but it's efficiency is only about 50% compared to about 95% for Lithium batteries. And then add to this the energy cost of transporting the Hydrogen and the entire supply chain, and because Hydrogen molecules are so small, they are constantly leaking from their pressurized tanks, and free Hydrogen in the atmosphere is a much more potent greenhouse gas than Carbon Dioxide.
Yes most definitely we need to look at the life cycle emissions of our vehicles - ESPECIALLY the ICE vehicles and their fuel supply chain! An EV powered by the dirtiest 100% coal-generated electricity is still cleaner over the entire life cycle than the most fuel efficient ICE vehicle and this has been proven in several studies.
Chinese🇨🇳 pledge to carbon neutrality is absolutely meaningless.

Carbon emissions can be recycled by trees and plants. Battery leakage will be much more hazardous.
Emissions by cars are not 100% CO2. EV's don't use lead acid batteries, they don't leak.

Steven and the female in question could touch their orifices and introduce contaminants into their human body resulting in sickness or diseases if not now, or perhaps months or years down the road. This cost bosses to reduce profits and salary increase as the management need to rehire and retrain talents, pay for sick days, insurance companies need to pay for trauma, disablement and death benefits, and the diseases of the victims could spread to other bosses. This reduced management budget that could otherwise be used to max charity donations.
