Building a 36 point model with PlaneWave L-500 mount

  • Showing the PlaneWave L-500 with a CDK20 creating a mount model. A mount model is what is needed to align a computerized telescope to the sky/stars. A mount model also corrects for atmospheric refraction, any not orthogonality of the alt and az axis and the optical axis and much more. This is what enables the telescope to point accurately. The first two mount model points are added in real time than the video is sped up 8x. It is cool to look at the window showing the points being added to the model and to see the terms in the model changing and refining as points are added.
    The process is that the telescope points to a spot in the sky, takes and image, software plate solves the image (determines the exact position in the sky), then adds the point to the mount model and moves to the next point. This setup did a 36 point model in under 7 minutes. In this case we used a CMOS camera made by ZWO.
