Is it Possible to Find Birds Without Hearing or Seeing Them?

  • One of the most interesting things about birding is that it is a complete sensory experience with both sight and hearing leading to the finding of different species. Since birds can be identified by both sight and hearing, it's still possible to find them with only one sense. Badgerland Birding is here to test out which sense is more important in birding; eye sight or hearing.

As a severely hearing-impaired birder, I see 95% or more of my birds without ever hearing them. I am very attuned to movement and visual birding is by far my favorite kind of birding. That said, when I go out with hearing birders, it can be a very frustrating experience to learn how many birds I am missing.

I think we all know that feeling the birds is the most important thing

Crows have a distinct smell that I pick up when I'm walking around the neighborhood. I dunno if it's because they've spent a lot of time in the trees I'm walking past, but having helped rehabilitate them before, the smell of crow is hard to miss.

Sight only, completed with a pair of binoculars, and a focused walking while scanning for movements, would give OK results I think.
