In this video we climb in and on the formidable German Defences at Utah Beach. WN10 is a fantastically well preserved resistance point, allowing us to see exactly how the German Defenders who were based here lived and help to give us an ideal of what they must have experienced on D Day, 6 June 1944.

My great grand uncle died in the Battle of the Bulge. His name was Dee Martin. He left a wife and son. My father and my son are named after him.
Thank you for sharing. God bless him
My Dad was there and fought in the Battle of the Bulge, winning 3 Bronze Stars during that battle. He rarely talked about anything that happen during that battle.
Fantastic video. I really touched home as my father in law came ashore here for his great European vacation. Go 4th Infantry Division and the 340th Ordinance Battallion. And RIP General T Roosevelt. You and all the soldiers are remembered. Cheers from Texas
I’m going to make a video on General Roosevelt in the future!
This feels like a personal guided tour. Thank you for your time explaining in depth.
You’re most welcome 😊
I remember seeing footage of the beach when the ocean experienced an extremely low tide event many years ago. I was amazed to see the amount of equipment that didn't make it ashore and probably still sits below the waves some 80 years later.
Yes exactly! The amount of equipment and materiel that was strewn across the landing beaches in the weeks and months after the invasion is beyond belief.
Great observations and comments Sir ….. 80 years later. Truly hallowed ground. So many lives were lost on those beaches and of course further inland, the hedgerows, the small towns and forests. I would love to walk those grounds like you have but I will probably not get that chance so thanks from Texas for providing these videos and commentary. My Dad fought in the Pacific theatre in WWII but pretty sure his Dad fought in Europe during WWI. I visit the WWII museums here in the States when I can. I hope I can pass on what happened during those times to my grandkids as they grow older. We must not forget. It’s too bad that most of the “war mongers” that we see today never went through the really hard times (The Great Depression) and the horrors of combat that our forefathers went through otherwise they would try to avoid war at all costs.
Thank you for the excellent comment and for sharing your personal stories. Much appreciated
Liked it before I watched it because I know it’s going to be good!
You’re too kind. Thank you very much indeed 😊
I always click like on videos for channels that I'm subscribed to just out of respect for the effort it takes to create content.
And of course The History Explorer always produces high quality content.
I'm 75 and my Dad told me he waded ashore on Utah Beach. I would love to visit it in person.
Hopefully this video allowed you to get close without visiting in person
STEVE Contact CWGC they hold information about visits.
You really must go to Utah Beach to honor your Dad.
@@DeborahHorn-f6x I have been thinking the same about my dad, who was at Utah.
Thank you for posting these episodes. It's a lot of hard work and we appreciate it. Cheers, mate. Take care
Thank you! Much appreciated 🙏
My father landed at Utah in the first wave. I miss him daily, especially on 6 June. He never felt comfortable talking about his experiences, so I appreciate the Utah beach videos.
You are most welcome my friend. I hope you enjoyed this video
Dear Kevin, so sorry for you loss🪽 🙏💐💝 Your Father is, not was, but IS a HERO so Greatful for his service 🪖🫡🪖🇺🇸
I listened with interest to your comments starting about 27:45. I think that the German soldiers would have understood that it was impossible to resupply all of the weapons systems in place and that they would have been intended to be used until they had exhausted their ammunition.
I think that they would also have realized that their own lives were intended to be used up in the same manner, sacrificing themselves to provide notice of the invasion's time and place, and to give as much time as possible for the armoured divisions to make ready for battle. They well knew that they were "The Crust" and I find it difficult to imagine what they might have thought early on the sixth of June, when they awoke to see the naval armada approaching, with only a few minutes to make their peace with themselves.
Well said Gavin. In reality they actually withdrew from the position after the landing took place. When the allies assaulted the position it had already been vacated
I'm just reading D Day Through German Eyes, the first chapter is based on one of the defenders Gefreiter Stefan Heinevez experiences of Utah Beach on June 6th 1944. He describes falling back to a triple bunker position which was wiped out in an air attack. The damage described is similar to the damage seen at the 18:30 mark in your video. Great vid btw.
So glad you enjoyed it
Great book that one. You don't tend to get many stories from the German side
A very well made production, well presented. It;s only by visiting and seeing these places gives a true idea what an amazing job they did in D day
Thank you very much! I hope you enjoyed the video
Very well done Rob. Brilliant video, thank you fo sharing. I agree with your points at the end, never forget
You are very welcome buddy. So glad you enjoyed it 👍
I’ve been an amateur historian for 50+ years heavily focusing on WWII. This is my second video of your production output I have watched.
I have enjoyed both immensely. I plan to view many more.
Thank you for your work and your non-commentary narrative position.
To many keyboard warriors (not) impose their empty headed non-sequitur opinions regarding an event for which they did not participate.
Thank you so much for your feedback. I’m not a historian at all, just an avid history fan. I really appreciate your kind comment and I hope you enjoy the other videos 👍
@@thehistoryexplorer thank you Sir for your response. I guess I don’t really count as a “real” historian by any measure being an amateur, but I love and learn from history as you do, and appreciate your commitment and contribution to all our knowledge.
Well done Rob. Fantastic as always. I' will add to my list of places to see during my trip
Thank you buddy! If you want any pointers please do get in touch
Heading to the Omaha beaches in 3 weeks! Can’t Waite it’s a big bucket list for me! It’s sacred ground!
You’ll have an amazing time!
I have been to Utah and Omaha beaches, and they are truly sacred ground. We must never forget the cost of freedom.
Excellent. I visited Omaha beach a few years ago at roughly the same tide that the first landings took place. It really was mind blowing looking over the beach from the bluffs and imagining the courage required to run forward under such withering fire.
It’s a fantastic place I go back all the time. I love standing there on those beaches thinking about those soldiers who went there so I can live my life in peace
The other issue with the magnetic readings is that the magnetic north pole actually shifts over time. That is why you have to add or subtract a certain number of degrees to convert a compass reading to match a paper map (which is aligned to the geographic north pole). The number of degrees to add or subtract depends on how far east or west you are from the magnetic north pole. Map makers have to periodically update their maps with the new number as the magnetic pole shifts. Most tourists looking at their compass don't realize their compass is pointing to a different North than it would have in WWII.
You’re absolutely correct. I’d love to go into that detail in these videos but I suspect it would only appeal to a smaller audience. I’d love to make some artillery specific videos that go into the technical detail
@@thehistoryexplorerthat's why you have us. That would be really boring for the average listener!
@@bgroovin1343but we would love it 😂
Plenty of us “Ordy” nerds out here.
I hope to have the opportunity to visit the D-day landing beach and the first liberated cities
Lucharon contra el enemigo equivocado. Los rusos eran el enemigo pero los pobres locos no se dieron cuenta hasta que fue tarde
Utah was the easiest beach landing in Normandy as there was no opposition, most of the 179 deaths were drownings and accidents. Compare this to Omaha which was the worst beach with 777 soldiers killed.
All true, but tell that the men who had to board a landing craft and make the run in to this beach. Bravery beyond measure in my book
@@thehistoryexplorer I would agree with that it takes bravery to do your duty. Thats why it was the finest generation.
I'm always amazed by the detail you put into your videos. Terribly moving and respectful of all lives lost in conflict. You bring history to life Rob.
Thank you so much my friend. Really appreciate it
Thank you once again for showing this.Sometimes I get a lump in my throat trying to realize what they went through although it would come nowhere near the reality of being there at that time..I feel you bring this to life with your excellent videos and I enjoy each single one of them which I keep so I may look back at them over time.. 👏 ❤
Lady Anna you are most welcome! You’re always so kind with your feedback. I hope you enjoyed the video and I hope you have a fantastic weekend
@@thehistoryexplorer Thank you! I also wish the best for you..❤
Appreciate what you do!
Greetings from Alabama in the US!
You are most welcome my friend. So glad you enjoyed the videos
Excellent reporting, excellent footage. Thank you for this important tribute to their incredible bravery.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent portrayal of the events, thank you. Are you ex Army?
I’m still serving. Thanks for the feedback 👍
if the F word is Feuer -which would make sense, it literally means Fire Everytime, meaning -"always ready"... Greetings from US base in Germany
Fantastic video. Many thanks. Very clear explanations and great photography
Glad it was helpful!
The more I watch this video, the more I like it. Amazing
So glad you enjoyed it 👍
My dad was here on his 4th invasion. His outfit had lost 700 men in operation Tiger during a practice landing in Britain.
On April 27, 1944.
A terrible waste of
❤🙏🇺🇸
I just hate to see young Americans die on the beach.
Very sad
Enjoyed the video, have made many trips to the beaches….awe inspiring. Thanks, Andrew
Glad you enjoyed it Andrew. The beaches are absolutely awe inspiring
Absolutely fascinating, ❤
Glad you think so! Thanks for the comment
Peço muito a Deus que isso não se repita é muito triste essas guerras que não levou a nada,ótimos vídeos para nós lembrar aqui fala do Brasil.
Well said
Another outstanding content! As military history scholar, I am very grateful for your content! Keep it up young man!
Also, just a suggestion, the longest 20th century war, Iran-Iraq war, is the least studied and really worth looking into! I have been studying this war for the past year or so and it is absolutely fascinating!
I’d have to visit there to make a video!! I enjoy walking the ground. Thank you very much for your kind comments
I LOVE SEEING THE PAST AND HOW BRAVE U.S. FORCES
Thank you for your dedication and passion in editing and posting these videos. So informative and enjoyable. Excellent work
Thank you very much! I’m just glad people are enjoying them as much as I enjoy making them
As always.👍👍, your thought of the day should be the every day thought... God Bless Them All
Thank you very much buddy
@@thehistoryexplorer My pleasure 👍🏻
My Dad landed on Utah Beach June 6 on D-Day.
Outstanding! You must be very proud of his legacy
@@thehistoryexplorer I am very proud of my Dad. After D-Day he spent 280 days in combat with the 79th Inf Div, 315th Inf Regiment Company L on the front lines, became a platoon sergeant, spent 6 months German occupation and had so many medals I couldn't list them all here. Thank you for your videos. They are great. I'm 65 and hope and pray one day to go and visit Normandy.
The German 21 Panzer Div counter attacked inbetween sword and juno beach before taking heavy casualties... Wish their was footage of this somewhere.
They did indeed. There is some footage of the 12th SS but not much at all of the 21st
My grandfather killed 31 soldiers on Utah Beach on D-Day. He was captured, and spent the rest of the war in a prison camp in Mississippi.
Oh wow. That’s pretty much the whole garrison on a strong point!
I caught that .
My late uncle, Staff Sgt. Roman Lukes from Sioux City, Iowa landed with the 8th Infantry Regiment 4th Division at Utah. He never spoke of that day…except in generalities, although I know that a good friend of his from Iowa literally had his head shot off next to him, which had to be an absolutely awful experience. RIP my dear uncle and Godfather.
That’s terrible. So sorry to hear that
My mother's father Jesse Davis landed there with the 4th ID 8th IR as well. My father's father Benjamin Compton landed with the 4th ID 12th IR.
I love your work much..wanna know your name.
Thank you very much
WOW I LOVE THIS ❤
People will hopefully get to see your content and learn more about recent history.
Thank you Jon I hope so. This is still a relatively new channel (1.5yrs old) so YT only tends to show the videos to a certain amount of potential viewers
I really like your videos mate. understated, not big timing or showing off. I can tell how much this all means to you 👍
I appreciate that! You’re too kind
These documentaries are very wonderful, I appreciate the work and dedication that goes into them. They are very heart breaking as well. So much suffering and tragedy in this world . I always think of the terror of these very young men as they hunkered down in the landing vehicles, and the carnage they would soon face on the beach. May God bless them eternally.
Great video
Thank you very much!
Thank god someone did a video that wasnt about Omaha beach.
Thank sir for this hard work
You are most welcome!
Thank you. I'm always looking for my granpa..29th ,175th. 3rd wave. He made it home. ST Lo was hell.
Oh wow! Yeh St Lo and the fighting to breakout was terrible
A farmer with dynamite? That's terrifying 😆
Tell me about it! They used to try and destroy some of the buildings and anti mobility features with explosives after the war. Obviously it just cost too much
0.08 almost de💀ath😢
Lots of that unfortunately
My father was at Utah Beach. I never expected to see any footage, but then I came upon this. Everything has always been footage of Omaha and some of Juno, but this is the first I have seen of Utah. Pops is in that crowd somewhere. Thank you for posting this! R.I.P Pops............ Salute! 🎖
You are most welcome my friend
@19:30 it would have been 81cm mortar, 2.4km max range.
Have you ever thought about visiting the remains of fortifications around Cherbourg? or even the Channel Islands?
I once saw a B&W film of American troops using a captured Wespe SPA 105mm gun to bombard Alderney Is.
I was meant to go into Cherbourg but ran out of time. Channel Islands is definitely on my list!
Amazing work, thank you so very much.
Our pleasure! Glad you enjoyed it
My father was in on D day spearhead the invasion, amphibian engineer first engineer brigade.
Another top job , glad I found your channel definitely up there with the other top ww2 history channels
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it
Absolutely fantastic a really good insight into the defenses bang on 👍
Thank you! This code hasn’t taken off but I really enjoyed making it. Glad you enjoyed watching it
Many forget that the Russians had done a lot of fighting on the Eastern front and pushed the allies up against the Western front so they could finish em off.
And they did it with British and American equipment and materiel
Nice video
Appreciate the feedback. Thank you!
At 21:27 don't you think that might be an an A-A with machine gunner i don't think Rommel would make a mistake like this. If it wasn't for enigma i think Rommel would not have lost Africa .and im a Tobruk person you know us rats..
😮😢😅
The next time you are going exploring, can I come, it will split the costs, I don't need to be in any video, I just love ww2 history and can't get an enthusiasts to travel with me to these places, liam form the west of Ireland
I usually go with my wife and children 😂 might make it a bit awkward! On this occasion I got up early while they were still in bed
@@thehistoryexplorer I totally understand, sorry for the late reply, but I’m just finished up, im a recovery truck driver/mechanic and work late hours, they’d when the accident happen and the piss heads are out,

Great videos thanks 🙏 keep it up stay safe 😊
Thank you! Will do and I hope you enjoy the other videos 👍
1.08, this image comes from the crossing of the rhine!
Video very well done. Informative and professional.
Much appreciated! Thank you for the feedback
There's a nice little right hander in tis opening but the day it was a sloppy 9ft swell with choppy seas and most of these young soldiers couldn't swim or they probably never saw a beach . Most horrific for 18 year old soldiers and i say soldiers in the biggest respect
I have respect for everyone who played a part in this epic operation
Very nicely presented, thank you.
You are very welcome!
It would be great in Colour
The last time uploaded a colour version I had complaints it wasn’t the original footage 🤷♂️
I also went to this location over the weekend and it just makes you stand there and try to imagine what they went through. And I seen the ladder and had to climb up it
Ha! Me too. Had to climb it too
@@thehistoryexplorer have you ever thought of being a tour guide because I’ve watched a few videos of yours now and you’re talking about the things our tour guide didn’t ,for instance the empty plot area where they placed the bodies
