Old Man at the Bridge by Ernest Hemingway
#hemingway #shortstory #literature
Just discovered this story this morning. I'm so intrigued by the character of the old man and I really identify with him. As with Old Man and the Sea, I don't think either of these stories can be fully appreciated until you're older. As a young man reading Old Man and the Sea, it was an enigmatic adventure story but as an older senior citizen now, it is so much richer. This story is the same - in particular the thought process of an older person and his fatigue. I think this fatigue or "softness" is what Hemingway feared as he grew older.. Strange that Hemingway never made it to the age of the man in this story or the old fisherman. Great channel! I'm glad I found you!
If you're interested, I'm currently doing a read along series for all of Hemingway's short stories.
Thank you, it was helpful to have the text on the screen. Happy to see Papa again on the channel, hoping to see some Carver stories too - wonder what would be your take regarding "The Bath" (Gordon Lish merciless edit) vs "A Small Good Thing" (expanded version of the same story).
Those are both Carver stories? I'm not very well versed in Carver, but I've enjoyed what I have read. I'll have to look into it.
@@StrippedCoverLitMedia Yes, two very different versions of the same Carver story
Interesting. I had never imagined anyone could misread this story, so I did learn something new.
Oh, thank god you're here, your highness. People had been reading literature without your approval. What a travesty.
