كانت حياة مانيه الخاصة مشغولة بوجود سوزان لينهوف، وهي معلمة بيانو هولندية لأبناء إدوارد منذ عام 1850. أنجبت سوزان ابنًا، ليون لينهوف، وكان هناك اعتقاد بأن إدوارد مانيه هو والد الطفل. عاشت سوزان مع مانيه، وفي عام 1863، بعد وفاة والدها، تزوجها مانيه وتبنى ابنها. أصبحت سوزان نموذجًا له في العديد من لوحاته، منها لوحة "القراءة" (1865).

Manet's private life was occupied by the presence of Suzanne Leenhoff, a Dutch piano teacher to Edouard's sons since 1850. Suzanne gave birth to a son, Leon Leenhoff, and it was believed that Édouard Manet was the father of the child. Suzanne lived with Manet, and in 1863, after the death of her father, Manet married her and adopted her son. Suzanne became his model for many of his paintings, including "Reading" (1865).
He produced the painting "Lunch on the Grass", which was rejected by the jury of the official Salon, but was shown at the "Salon des Rejects" in 1863, an exhibition that Napoleon III allowed artists who had been excluded from the Academy's Salon to show their work. One of the most controversial works exhibited there was the painting "Olympia", which caused a huge scandal, especially when it was discovered that the model for the two famous paintings was Victorine Meurent, who had been Manet's model for 11 years.
