great video!. just bought a 2000 TJ a few weeks ago, Took it out in the snow last night. It would not stay in 4H or 4 L. While driving. It would jump out of 4H and make a grinding noise (same in 4L). I saw your video, and made a quick adjustment to the linkage rod as you described. took it out for a test drive, Bam! fixed. Thanks for the assist!
7 years later, this is still very much relevant! Thank you for making this. It really did take a moment to fix it. To think I was looking for the install video for the cable link install. Thank you!
I just had a new transmission, clutch, and transfer case installed. I can get into 4 wheel low but I cannot get into 4 wheel night??? The gears grind. Any thoughts?

Thanks for posting! Definitely a much simpler fix than I thought! I'm actually the guy who posted about this on the forum a while back and just want to thank you for the help.
thank you, , got long arms added to 03 TJ with 22,000 original miles , no 4 low . I undid bolt, lubed all pivot points, went to the front and pushed it back into 4 low , moved 3/4" on rod , snugged the set bolt...she's right on.
Hot dayum....pretty sure this solved my problem. Bought my 98 TJ a couple months ago and every time I put it in for low it keeps popping out. I have a 3-in body lift and I'm pretty sure the guy before me did not adjust this. Thanks a ton!
thanks for the info. I was able to get mine adjusted after some work. fire is amazing at getting rusted bolts to come free. I took the whole rod out, sanded it down, made sure everything worked good, used antiseise (shit spelling) on the whole thing, readjusted it, and works like a championship now! great video thank you.
Wow.... I am having this problem. I put in a clutch and all was A OK. Then I had to do something to the my Exhaust pipe or something and drop the cross plate again. Now I have clicking and jumping when I put it in 4x4. So many have said it the front wheels or axsle pop. I know what it is..... I was about to change the transfer chain. As soon as I get home I will try this..... I am almost sure this should WORK. I will repost when it's FIXED. THANKS A MILLION
Great video but I have a cj3b 53 that won't go into 2wd only stays in 4 wd no matter how I move the shifters, is this an adjustment or do I have a tranie problem
Wish this solved my issue went in to 4low a week ago, installed a body lift and now it won’t go in 4low, tried this it didn’t work anyone have so other options?
I just had my transfer case replaced, when I attempt to engage it bends the cable right where the bushing is almost like it isn’t tight enough and doesn’t engage I have an 07 jw. Mechanic is telling me I have to replace the entire unit…is this video what I need to do.
Is the process on a YJ basically the same thing? I have basically the same symptoms you mentioned, mostly just grinds in 4WD, and the couple times it actually went in it seemed to slam in.
This happened to an XJ I bought, it was caused by a poorly executed engine replacement. Got it for $700 , 1 owner 165k miles new bfg ats and it was a 3 min fix!
My TJ runs in 4 low just fine EXCEPT when I'm slowly going downhill with the clutch pedal engaged....just creeping down really slowly on the brakes, it'll make a grinding sound. Do you think it's the same problem?
caution: I just tried this and now my 4 low is completely gone. It was grinding and popping out but now the Jeep is treating the 4 low spot as another neutral gear. All the other gears have been shifted so the 2 wheel drive is in the 4 high spot and the 4 high spot is in the neutral spot. I then tried to undo it and it hasn’t worked. I will try to update this if I get the issue fixed.
Hi I'm having a problem with my '99tj shifting back to 2wd, everything works as it should, no noises, no lift, 164000 miles, is it strictly a linkage run setup or is there vacuum i should be looking for. shifts from 4hi to 4low no problem just cant get back to 2wd. thanks for any help on this.should i try the linkage adjustment?
Its an 8mm for those who only want to crawl under once.?.? Oh not really once. But I'm sure its an 8mm. Sidenote. Mine doesnt even shift with the linkage disassembled. But you can pick an np231 23 spline long shaft for about $300 on eBay. Local rebuild was $750. Thats a few bucks more than the 42re transmission cost to have rebuilt.
unless you are me who tried this with no luck cause the rod and adjustment holder are rusted like a bitch and now I will have to heat everything up, take it all apart, sand the living hell out of all the parts, reassemble it, and pray that I have 4x4 again. Rust sucks!
+turfwerks1 Rust is a major pain, I'm in Virginia where they spray the roads with every rust making chemical know to man. I'm sure it's too late to tell you, but using "KROIL OIL" and a wire brush to clean the threads makes a huge difference. I've used every spray that I can find to unstick rusty bolts, but the kroil out performs them all. It's a little hard to find, but phenomenal stuff.

Worked for me and I was real close to buying a Novak cable for $175 to resolve this issue. Thank you!
Thank you for the quick how too video. Worked great. I just changed my clutch and then had a hard time getting into 4 low.

Thank You!!!!! Finally someone shows exactly what to do... most videos are skipping steps.. Thank you!
You just helped me fix my Jeep. Thank you so much.

Thank you! Working properly now.

exactly what i was looking for, thanks you!
Thanks...super helpful and easy todo! Time to crawl again!
works perfectly except for going from drive to reverse pops it out again. adjusted it three times. ideas?
Very helpful! You helped me solve my problem.
Thank you. Worked like a charm.
Worked perfect! Thanks for the video!
Thank you. I'll be giving that a go this weekend.

Ok...I’ve adjusted the linkage as far out as it will go and 4L still isn’t engaging. I’ve got a 4.5” lift so do I need a longer linkage?
I have a 2003 wrangler and every so often it will pop out of 4wd high. I have a manual transmission. will this adjustment rod help?
Worked amazing quick fix thanks
Hey is it the same fix for 4WD-H if that’s popping out? My 4WD-L stays in when engaging.
My TJ runs in 4 low just fine EXCEPT when I'm slowly going downhill with the clutch pedal engaged....just creeping down really slowly on the brakes, it'll make a grinding sound. Do you think it's the same problem?
i have the problem where it will shift into 4hi but not back to 2wd. Should i adjust it like this or instal the linkage drop bracket?
Did the trick thank you.
What if you can get 4wheel low but it grinds in 4 wheel high?
My NP231 makes a whining noise after I drive 15 min. Goes away after car
gets cold. If I remove the front drive shaft I have no noise
It worked...Thank you
Great advice thanks
a lot of peoples problems are their shift linkage rod is slightly bent. adjust the main bolt that holds the tension or check that the rod isnt bent

I can't get mine out of 4 wheel drive now being told bad transfer case
What if you can't get into 4lo

Wow easy fix thanks
did this and now i cant move the jeep, no part time lights on the dash and she wont go to 2h
If you need the linkage for YJ: Part number: 53004338 Bushings to go along with it: 0357533 or J8132927; J3238418
Good video
I can't get my Jeep out of 4 hi now

13mm in mine. Jeep Wrangler L.J 2005.
Hopefully this is my problem because my case doesn't go in 4L.

Yes it does! Hopefully, mine isn't I think I found my problem though.
