This was one of my Dad's favourite pieces of military music, he served with the KSLI in the 1950's and was in the regimental band and this was played often by them.So it was only right to have this played on entry to his funeral in 2010.He regularly reminisced about his army days in Hong Kong Germany and Kenya.RIP Dad GBNF x
I decommissioned a Royal Navy Ship not so long ago. They played Sunset as we did Sunset and that was that. She went for Razorblades. From the opening bars of the Royal Marine Band playing Sunset, I welled up, and stood like a statue with tears rolling down as the "Officer of the Day". Immensely moving, and extremely appropriate for your Fathers Funeral. British and Proud....
I remember that being played in Hong Kong the night we left our last colony to go down in the pages of history, and peacefully laid the Empire to rest.
CARRY ON MISTER... LET US HOPE FOR BETTER DAYS OF PEACE AND PROSPERITY AS WE ALL GET OLDER AND PERHAPS WISER. LET US ALL PRAY FOR A BETTER DAY. LET TRUTH AND THE LOVE THAT WE ALL EXPERIENCE BE MOST IMPORTANT IN OUR LIVES AND THAT OF OUR CHILDREN.
I was such an honort to be awarded USNAVY Honorary Captin in 1988 of Boston.Just Because i am a high school in class for serving USNAVY Veterans Hospital. 1980's japan and US have been fighthing defrnse fiictions. However, we were high - school boys, and i tried the missions in Veterans Hospital by volunteers so hard. Then, real solidess, veterans all sang Eternal Father strong save in choras. I coud not bear the tears...
Gents and all Heroes in our armed forces allways you are in our hearts you will never be forgoton as long as i and my children are alive . Hatty XIX Green Howards
617 - You should be as proud of your album as we are of you and of all our armed forces. I listen to this particular track whenever I think of my best mate Stuart, who was blown up beside me. I think of him often, knowing that just a few yards would have made the difference between him and me, and knowing that he was a much nicer human being than I could ever be.
The odd thing is that Stuart hated the term "hero", believing that it was wrongly used to describe someone who had done something brave. He used to argue that any soldier who entered the field of battle was being brave, but to become a hero meant you had to have done something heroic. I witnessed Stuart do some extraordinary things because he believed he was invincible, but he always argued he was only doing what he signed up to do and was being paid to do. I miss him.
At my farewell service at Vryheid (I'm a padre, and former sailor), I made the "mistake" of having the congregation sing the Lord's Prayer in Afrikaans to the tune of "Melita" (Eternal Father strong to save). Had kept my pose until then, but when we started singing, the tears flowed...
@renard801 My father was ex Royal Navy and he LOVED sunset. It was one of the peices of music we chose for his funeral when he died in 2007. I struggle to get through it now. Great music. English and proud.
the Battle of Britain was important to all of us I known I was there not in this life but in a former life emotions feelings and a feel of what was before keeps coming back to me
"With an impressive 361-year history they are the oldest continual surviving recording artists in the world." Wait, ... So, folks were already making recordings in (figuring... posted in 2010, so...) IN 1,649 A.D.!!!! Lordy! I want hear those ancient Rennaisance recordings!!! YES!!!!! ;-)
Looking thoughtfully through this collection - i'm also thinking of "modern" britain - If this nation now was threatened by anything bigger than a pack of Rats - those living on our shores now would Scuttle off to where they came from only a few decades ago Back to Pakistan India Africa Bangladesh - Do you think for ONE IOTA that ANY of them would lift a finger in defence of Britain ( barring the Ghurkas of course ) Forget it - RIP Britain of the fifties i say !!
Oh no, no, no. This rendition is beautiful in its way, but struggles to get bigger, bigger, bigger with each progression. The "Navy Hymn" is a simple, touching masterpiece that needs no such embellishment. It stands alone in its humble magnificence.

May your mate, Stuart rest in peace. I'm sorry to here of heroes from across the big pond meeting an untimely death.
Fair winds and following seas, brother.

Great! The melody of the song is gentle but reverent.
Stunning. Quite simply, nobody does it better.
Apart from HM Royal Marines!

You have my sympathy.

LMAO!!! "You have my sympathy." I couldn't have said it better!
Heroes is a great album as I'm one of the musicians in the band itself

After your fourth funeral, you get the emotion behind the tune.
