I'm willing to give the show runners a lot of latitude on the whole Alex/Cas thing. They were handed a tough situation and did the best they could. All we fans can do is temper our disappointment. But hold on to our fond memories of the best darn pilot in the entire Sol System. Rest In Peace Alex Kamal. You're a legend.
In the end of book 5, that's exactly how it ends, with the ship disappearing. Only difference is that you see the Admiral's perspective as he is being disintegrated.
There actually WAS several hints that Alex was going to stroke out, but we've had 5 seasons of them talking about the 'dangers of sustaining hard burns and being juiced for too long' without ever actually paying it off with any actual consequences, so most people just ignored all those hints because they never materialized before. On re-watching it's surprisingly obvious with all the hints. Bobby's dialogue "we're already juiced to the gills, we could stroke out", Alex looking dazed for several seconds after coming out of that last hard burn, and there was a scan on his monitor of his brain with a yellow warning dot flashing.

And I think there's a shot in the Luna bar where Cas Anvar can still be seen, but they cropped the shot to not show his face. It's where Amos comes over to whisper sth in Naomi's ear. The guy behind him looks and moves like Alex. Then the fourth empty chair when Avasarala addresses the Roci crew in the final shot. They most likely edited Cas out of that scene.
@@STR33TSofJUST1C3 If you look at the bonus content on prime (use the xray thing on the last episode) then you can see several shots of Alex sitting at the couches along with the rest of the crew. The original speech about someone dying and getting "full military honours" was supposed to be about Fred Johnson because he strokes out during the battle with the belters while on the Roci in the books. That is why Avasarala saying he will be buried with full honours is such a big deal... because he had been cast as a traitor to Earth for joining the OPA. They did a really good job at switching out his death for Alex considering the restraints put on them.
@@bartschaap6236 Yeah, they screwed up with the recast so bad, it was basically a different person. And that was a recast of a minor character. I found it helped a little to imagine that soft kind old man instead, when Chrisjen sent messages to her husband, and grieved this season. Alex is a main character 5 seasons in, the image is firmly set in viewers minds. No matter how good the new actor could be, it wouldn't feel right to bring a new face at the end of the show.

If Naomi hadn't left, she wouldn't have learned that Sakai had sabotaged the Rocinante's drive code. So she, Holden, and everyone on Tycho station would be dead now.
Not necessarily. Sakai betrayed them and killed Johnson. Naomi would have been smart enough to realize Sakai messed with the Roccinante. Naomi would have found the issue.
why would they not check for sabotage given aakai was in charge of ship repairs? especially after her prison interview? whole naomi drama was just that, illogical unnecessary melodrama to fill the time.
@@sitting_nut In the book they do but they miss the code .. they explain its notoriously hard to find cause it was only a couple of lines of code in the magnetic bottle controller..and it was quite simple yet flexible (it could be configured for a large number of triggers).. to the point that the hacker that finds it says it probably was used to sabotage several ships in the past but never ever nobody found evidence..until now.
You guys seem confused at a couple things so I thought I'd leave a bit of information 1) Drummer put her first torpedo into Oksana's ship, probably because she knew that of her family, she'd be the least likely to go along with her rebellion, and even then, she only took out the drive to keep it from changing directions or accelerating. The intent was probably to knock the ship out of the fight. 2) The next thing she targets is the light frigate-- the Koto-- because it's probably the only target her belter skiff has a chance of taking out with her torpedoes, even then, I'm pretty sure the only thing it does is allow the Rocinante to kill it with the railgun while it's distracted. 3) Josep, in the disabled Mowteng, overcomes Oksana, and launches their torpedo load at the Serrio Mal, the heavy frigate, which, combined with the Roci's torpedo load, manages to destroy enough torpedoes to allow the Roci to close to railgun range and finish the job with a flyby. 4) Bobby can talk to Naomi, because even though there's no air to carry the vibrations of sound, if you touch helmets, the vibrations of your voice transmit through the helmets themselves. We see them do this throughout the series, in fact, when Bobby's fireteam is wiped out on Ganymede in Season 3, after their comms get jammed, we see them do this.
Sound can't travel through space, but it can live on in vibrations through objects. You can hear the sound from helmet to helmet by contact. Let the vibration transfer over.

These people are REALLY BAD at paying attention to details and getting scene sequences correctly. REALLY. REALLY. BAD! During that whole sequence they were cheering on one of the Belter ships thinking it was the Roci.
@@Cbricklyne To be fair, if they skew the angle of Roci's run at the Serrio Mal more towards the top, it would be more helpful. Since both are Martians ships, the Serrio Mal tail kind of look like the Roci. The run at the Koto is fine since the audience can really see the Koto's nose that does not look like anything like the Roci. I suppose that's what rewatch is for. It's only upon rewatch and a little bit of thinking about the scene to realize it is really lucky that Josef fire all those torpedoes that overwhelm the Serrio Mal's PDC. It allow the Roci to use those torps. as cover and get close enough to strafe the Serrio Mal with multiple rail gun shots.

A short breakdown of the Rocinante battle vs "Drummers" fleet at the start: -Drummer(Tynan) fires a torpedo at the Dewalt (Oksana & Joseph ship), forcing them to shutdown their drive. -Drummer orders the Moteng to stand down as well, before she is attacked inside the ship. -Drummer regains control and fires Tynans 7 remaining torpedos at the Free Navy ship Koto (stolen Martian Destroyer) -While the Koto is busy with the torpedos, the Rocinante fires a couple of Railgun shots through them, disabling the ship. -The Rocinante and Free Navy ship Serrio Mal (stolen Martian Heavy Frigate) fire at eachother, both are able to shoot down all torpedos. -Jospeh in the Dewalt launches all their torpedos at the Serrio Mal. -While the Serrio Mal is busy dealing with all the Torpedos comming for them, the Rocinante starts strafe hitting them with its railgun, you can see 5 shots go through the Heavy Frigate, until one finally hits the core and destroys it.
Back in season three Holden had a vision inside the nucleus where the Builders of the Protomolecule wiped out whole solar systems like they were trying to cauterize a wound. That was because the Builders themselves were being hunted down by an even more powerful entity. Holden sees these entities everytime he goes through a ring. Dr. Okoye saw them too when she threw Miller into the "angry eye" at the end of season four. Now it seems that these entities have awakened from their slumber and like Holden said: "They are angry!"
The last pages of the 5th book explain exactly what happened to the Martian ship as it went through the gate. The way it reads, they were simply erased from existence as their molecules were ripped apart.
The way the re-edited and added the reshoots, even though Alex's death was abrupt, it felt seamless for me and it worked well. I would've hated a recast. It would feel strange and change the dynamic of the crew.
That ship he fired on wasn't even close to looking like the Roci it wasn't even the correct color. He fired at one of Marko's ships and Oksana tried to stop him. It was funny to see you guys rooting for one of the bad guy's ships.
Eh, I had to re-watch the sequence to know what was going on, but I give credit to the creators that they expect you to follow along without any hand-holding or being spoon fed😊
Drummer fired on the one of her ships Killing the drive. Then fired on the Koto which the roci killed with its rail gun. Josep then fired on the Serrio Mal, which was also killed by the Roci's rail gun.
"You're talking about Alex. He'll be fine." "This is going to be the last maneuver he'll ever make." Hummm. Yeah, I was kind of annoyed Karal died so easily. They told us a long time ago about Belter sign language such as Naomi used. They've also shown us that by touching helmets they can communicate without radio. And they've showed us that Bobbie's suit has thrusters. Everything was set up. This season has had the best sheer acting of any of them. If Naomi hadn't gotten herself kidnapped, she would not have known the Roci had been sabotaged. Both the Roci (and she and Holden) and Tycho would have been destroyed.

Marco extremism magnifies the difference in Drummer's family members view into divide. And Marco veil threats basically makes the brave and more moral of that crew to stand up and fight while the others comply. In a way is a microcosm of what happen in germany, the aspiring space Hitler that is Marco is increasingly making his people to be complicit with his atrocity.

Naomi knew this would be the last time she would be able to see her son. She had to go alone because she knew Marco wouldn’t let her get near Philip if Holden was with her. She was ready to die. After Philip turned her away, she was ready to sacrifice herself so she wouldn’t be used against Holden. The only reason she didn’t kill herself was because of the trap set to lure the Roci. She wasn’t working hard to be rescued or stay alive... she did everything to try and keep them away
They had already wrapped up filming before the Cas stuff came to light, so they had to add a couple of scenes and some dialogue to make it work. I think the did a good job overall. Great reaction
Syfy swung for the fence with season 3. The story overall is awesome. Nothing I didn’t like about any season make the show bad. Just being a critical outsider. Love the story that’s presented to us. Normies rock. ❤️
Re: There being a warning about Alex I think it was as subtle as the show can be at times, but we've seen in the past how taxing high-G burns can be, and even the loop that Naomi's ship was taking by the end looked kind of crazy loopy (remember that Naomi, though falling behind due to lack of thrust, was still travelling at high speeds on the same course). Bobbie warned him how dangerous it could be, especially after all they'd already done ("stroke out" being a term she used). And then you see the course Alex had come up with to catch Naomi's ship when he thought they had time. It was a series of like 8 incredibly tight loops he was staring at. Imagine how much faster or more recklessly he came in when he saw her situation on the float. Yes, the show could have had him not stroke out there, his luck and body hold, but I think they did establish the stakes... it's just hard to feel that way given the fact that there wasn't a bit more build and due to all the surrounding stuff.
One of Marco's ships is the same model as the Roci but with different coloring. Might trick you to think that Josep isn't the coolest cat in space. Not the first helmet to helmet chat on the show.
It's not the same model. It's the Roci's bigger brother. The Roci is a frigate, the Serrio Mal is a heavy-frigate. In its "vanilla" configuration, the Serrio Mal would pummel the Roci into dust. But the Roci has several aftermarket upgrades and a more skilled crew. The heavy frigate differs mostly in long range fighting capabilities as it sports the same class Epstein drive and an equal number of PDC arrays, i.e. six. The key difference (beside size) is that it sports four more torpedo bays, and can thus carry two to three times more torpedos than the Roci. The railgun is what makes the Roci significantly more dangerous as its small size means it can manoever much faster than the heavy frigate (if that was also to be outfitted with a fixed keel-mounted railgun).
I predict the commander of the Martians will be the big villian next season I don't think they disintegrated I think they went through another dimension.

The comments about Naomi making a dumb move is interesting, and possibly shows that a lot of the people watching this show don't have kids. It was easy to put Filip away in her mind when she didn't think he was in danger, but Marco's antics would have gotten him killed. If that was my child, I'd have done the exact same thing. Common sense doesn't come into it. The truly harder decision was to finally leave him to his father when she saw that Filip was beyond reach.
@28:10 - The point was better made subtly IMO. Bobbi warned Alex beforehand not to do the high G turn and said that they could stroke out if he tried it again with a damaged ship, then Alex sounded a little tired later when he communicated with Bobbi and Naomi. Plus, the show demonstrated throughout the series how rough on the body the maneuver can be. That's all that was needed. It would have probably been overkill if they had spelled out anymore than that, how Alex could die.
I think recasting Alex would be hard because of cast chemistry. you bring a new actor in who is to say he would have that same lived in chemistry that we had and the cast had with the original actor. I think that would have been far too awkward and transitioning to it being Bull taking the helm is just a good option. So really I feel like they went with their best option all things considered in that situation.
Keep in mind that the belters have no reason to leave our solar system since they can't survive on any of the alien planets (Naomi showed why last season). It looks like the Martians are trying to use the proto molecule to use some alien technology in another system (which explains why the Martian lady was so intent on asking Alex about his experience on the alien planet). I also don't think that last scene meant the Martian ship was destroyed. Seemed to me that last scene was meant to show the other aliens being "woken" or "antagonized?"'; leading to them playing a much bigger role in next season. My theory is the Martians will be manipulated by the evil aliens in one system while Marcos continues his war in our system.
Not all Belters can't adapt to or survive in the new worlds. There are some who managed to adapt to living in Illus. The Martian ship was destroyed. It's the last scene in the book as well which confirms it. It's worth noting that it (what happened to them) is part of a storyline that's not resolved even in the books.

There should be just as much opportunity for belter stations in the other solar systems through the gates as there is in the home system. If they wanted, most of the Belters could have fucked completely out of Sol forever and setup their own space utopias, while still having regular enough transit of vital goods to/from the home system. Earth wouldn't have the energy or impetus to go out of their way to bother them. So I don't see why the Belters don't basically search for one system with a super good asteroid belt and lots of dwarf planets to work with, and spend their own energy developing them. The Illus colonists had the right idea, mining lithium and shipping it back to Sol; but ideally they would have developed the space around the Illus system, spent the time to pioneer and establish a viable trade route, and then facilitated those who could go down the well to secure for them some mining operations; as well as the Earther teams who would inevitably come. Building orbital shipyards that could then build and maintain the unprecedented demand for new cargo ships and fuel depots and so-on in order to start moving these goods through the rings to the various colonies and back to Sol. If the Belters just capitalized on the new opportunity to position themselves as the connective tissue between these worlds, they'd quickly build a railroad empire to rival the UN and any of the other colonies that would rise up over the decades. Sure some of their offspring would end up being planetary based, but their lineage as coming from the stars would still be there, and in time those communities would be more likely to empathize and support Belter causes. In time, they'd outnumber Earth's population and power.
The ship was eaten by the gate aliens. In the book, thirteen ships had already been destroyed going through the gates. I would have liked the see bobby rescue Naomi as it was in the book, riding in on a missile...So Dr.Strangelove.
Or Bull, who has already been piloting the Roci this season and who they made a point to show sitting in Alex's chair holding his coffee cup as if he were taking the spot.
@@davebcf1231 This. Bull is already a better fit since they showed awesome battle chemistry between him and Holden. Clarissa may be a decent pilot but she's probably nowhere near as good in tactics as Bull and Alex who have military experience.
the free navy ships were 2 of drummers fleet and 2 ex-MCRN ships, Drummer took out one with her salvo of missles and Josep joined Team Drummer and fired on the 2nd giving the rosi time to line up the rail gun and take it out
Don't worry about being confused about the ships during the space combat. I've read other comment sections and others have found it hard to know what ship was which especially since the other Martian ship was a close class to the Roci. Also book spoiler... Alex's death is how Fred dies in the books so suddenly dying of a stroke from high g isn't unusual. The Ty and that Guy address this especially how death just happens when you aren't expecting it
The novella about Erich as a space gangster is called Auberon. It's set after the events of book 7, however, which means it contains massive spoilers for the show. I really recommend The Churn, though, which tells Amos and Erich's backstory. We only got some glimpses this season. Also, they have clearly been setting up storylines that go beyond book/season 6. I'm almost certain there will be more to come after the final season.
At a ring near Uranus we got a R.U.D. of the Barkheath (rapid unscheduled disassembly). There are so many questions about the floaty orange aliens I hope season 6 gets to. After Pandora opened her box all that was left was hope.
As the Razorback approached Naomi they were on full burn they had to stop quickly so the G-Force would have been enormous to stop, or they would shot right by her. Talking about awards the Golden Globes etc are blanking the Expanse, not even looking at shows other than shows on the major US networks.
Remember when James holden showed fried Johnson the thing that might’ve ended the civilization that created the protomolecule? It looked similar to what froze that martian ship and how the ship looked like from the inside
I heard a rumor that the show would stop at Season 6 which will adapt Babylon's Ashes....but why are they then hinting at the stuff with Laconia that takes place afterwards? It's gonna leave people pissed if they stop the show next season before the Laconia storyline really kicks in.
Drummer was also amazing* correction to my earlier comment. Just did not see enough of them in my opinion to really get that bond they have. Maybe if there was conversation about how long they have been together or a flash back or two.

Chrisjen's speech was nice, but she certainly didn't start the series that way with her Earth must come first BS. And I want to believe she's change but in the back of my mind I wonder if push came to shove she'd revert back to who she was in season one.
Who would Chrisjen choose to save in a burning building? The Earther, the Martian or the Belter baby? :P An attack from a Belter faction devastated Earth and Chrisjen was still able to seperate them from the Belt. I think it always comes down to what Amos said. When push comes to shove, the tribe shrinks. It's to Chrisjen's testament that she didn't let Marco's actions shrink the tribe. She has at least proven that her "us vs them" mentality has shifted to include all of humanity. She doesn't want to radicalize the entire Belt, it's true. But her decision was not merely strategic but also compassionate.
Season one and two Chrisjen would have slung nukes back at the belt and not even broken a sweat over it. Her time with Bobbie and the Roci crew has opened her eyes. So yeah, she's grown. Which is cool to see. But she's tough as nails when she needs to be.
Not only did she save Holden whenever she did that by going there she saved herself because she would have been on the resonante as well whenever it blew up
I get Anvar had to leave, but it still sucks we didn’t get to truly experience the death of one of the main characters. I mean Bobbie foreshadowed Alex’s rescue could stroke them out but it still felt really glossed over just to get it over with. Meanwhile- that Naomi scene was friggin epic. Focusing on nothing but her face the whole time and then seeing Bobbie come around her side was emotional as hell. Amos is the absolute man! Love the week to week release and hope they do s6 the same way. Friggin amazing season!
You can tell straight up that alex death was an add on after the filming 😂😂 he died cuz of a stroke caused by high g's while being at 0 g's unless I'm missing some science idk how that's possible 😂😂 it's nice that they didnt just pull a middle finger to him in a horrible death 😂😂 hopefully they keep the new pilot he cool af !!!

If anything, saying that "sound travels through particles, not just solids" is a meaningless and almost nonsensical, if not redundant way of putting it. Especially because it's obvious that sound travels through liquids and gases as well by the same means.

Alex died in the show the way Fred died in the books. And they have been talking about the possibility of stroke from high Gs from the very beginning. Also, you may have missed it, but the monitors showed an issue with him and he made some comments that suggested that he wasn't feeling great before he passed.
@@sparrowlt yep, that is totally in keeping with a massive stroke. Some pain, some disorientation, and then (if not treated quickly) coma or death. It is supposed to make you upset. It is supposed to feel random and out of nowhere. It is in keeping with the grounded nature of the show. And he still died being a hero.

And it certainly wasn't "out of nowhere" LITERALLY before that happens, Bobbie spells it out and tells Alex that they both can't take another hard burn since they're juiced to the gills and might probably stroke out. She actually says it, and it happens to Alex (who's older than her by about 10-15 years and more at risk of stroking out than she is) They couldn't have laid it out any more clearly than that (Even though they didn't plan it out that way and edited the whole thing after the fact to show the scene as we se it.). But to claim it came out of nowhere, after all the information they gave is more a sign that you're bad at paying attention than it is a reality of how it actually went down. Sorry to say.
Holden was telling Fred Johnson how he felt every time he went through the gates, like they were watching him and getting angry. Fred said no one else reported anything. The pause shows why no one else notices anything, they go through completely unaware they are not alone.
Except it looks like while they are paused, the ship continues to move through the ring. It looks like the engine just sputters out right before it goes through. I think they were destroyed by the red things.

They perceive the spaces between atoms and subatomic particles. Then, something moves among them. Something made of the Empty. The book ends with He turned and saw something move. Something else, not another cloud like himself, like the others, like matter. Something solid but obscured by the emptiness of material like a shape in the fog. Many shapes, neither light nor dark, but some other thing, some third side of that coin, passing through the spaces between the spaces. Rushing toward them. Toward him. Sauveterre did not notice his death.
It's the vibrations when their helmets touch. The sound waves move the glass slightly and that transfers into the other helmet letting the other person hear.

@@kevinjustin7646 Belters would not be able to even walk in a ship under more than 1G. Belters live their lives anywhere between 0G and 0.3G. 1G is already a heavy toll for most. Also, they were on an intercept course, not chasing them. They wouldn't need to match the Roci's speed. Not to mention that the Roci was already reducing their burn to widen the gap between the Belters and the Razorback. Getting smashed on the back of the head with a fire extinguisher and falling face first on a railing is already a pretty good way to die. No need to introduce high-G into the mix.

Josep is my unsung hero of the episode he ultimately chose to side with Camina and helped them take out the frigate. He also warns Oksana it doesn’t matter, the family is done one way or another.
This demonstrates that a railgun isn't enough. You have to get close enough to use it. In both cases a screen of torpedoes helped the Roci get to railgun range & seal the deal. But it also illustrates how a 2-ship team of torp-launcher & railgun shooter can take down a much bigger destroyer or frigate. War is a team sport.
@@allyourmoney Roci could've used torpedoes there instead of the railgun, it would be the same, but they are low on those even when packing ful(only 20), and their aftermarket super light railgun fires a projectiles at little less than 10km/s so they have to be in range of PDC's(less than 50km)for it to be useful, cause 5sec travel is more than enough to dodge the railgun projectiles..

@14:45 Naomi could hear Bobbie talking because they were in contact. The sound was all muffled sounding because it was being conducted through their helmets. Remember back in season 2 ep 1 when Holden and Naomi were on the outside of the ship. They turned off their radios and touched their helmets together so they could talk without anybody else hearing.
The death of Alex vs. recasting must have been a difficult decision, but I firmly believe that this is a gift to the book readers like myself. They have seamlessly integrated the brilliant Cara Gee into multiple other Belter characters without cluttering the story, and I expect they can write some incredible new content that works in the the grand context. Book readers will be get the joy of the unknown but anticipated:)

This was such a perfect ending to this season. It’s like watching what season 7 of GoT should’ve been. All the seasons of build up pay off and the stakes are phenomenally high.
I'm willing to give the show runners a lot of latitude on the whole Alex/Cas thing. They were handed a tough situation and did the best they could. All we fans can do is temper our disappointment. But hold on to our fond memories of the best darn pilot in the entire Sol System. Rest In Peace Alex Kamal. You're a legend.

In the end of book 5, that's exactly how it ends, with the ship disappearing. Only difference is that you see the Admiral's perspective as he is being disintegrated.

There actually WAS several hints that Alex was going to stroke out, but we've had 5 seasons of them talking about the 'dangers of sustaining hard burns and being juiced for too long' without ever actually paying it off with any actual consequences, so most people just ignored all those hints because they never materialized before.
On re-watching it's surprisingly obvious with all the hints. Bobby's dialogue "we're already juiced to the gills, we could stroke out", Alex looking dazed for several seconds after coming out of that last hard burn, and there was a scan on his monitor of his brain with a yellow warning dot flashing.
Actually they did every thing in post after they shot all the scenes for the season they reedited and reshot scenes with out Cas in them.

And I think there's a shot in the Luna bar where Cas Anvar can still be seen, but they cropped the shot to not show his face. It's where Amos comes over to whisper sth in Naomi's ear. The guy behind him looks and moves like Alex. Then the fourth empty chair when Avasarala addresses the Roci crew in the final shot. They most likely edited Cas out of that scene.
@@STR33TSofJUST1C3 If you look at the bonus content on prime (use the xray thing on the last episode) then you can see several shots of Alex sitting at the couches along with the rest of the crew. The original speech about someone dying and getting "full military honours" was supposed to be about Fred Johnson because he strokes out during the battle with the belters while on the Roci in the books. That is why Avasarala saying he will be buried with full honours is such a big deal... because he had been cast as a traitor to Earth for joining the OPA. They did a really good job at switching out his death for Alex considering the restraints put on them.

I'm actually happy that they didn't recast Alex. It would be like trying to recast Amos, Holden or Naomi.

@@bartschaap6236 Yeah, they screwed up with the recast so bad, it was basically a different person. And that was a recast of a minor character. I found it helped a little to imagine that soft kind old man instead, when Chrisjen sent messages to her husband, and grieved this season.
Alex is a main character 5 seasons in, the image is firmly set in viewers minds. No matter how good the new actor could be, it wouldn't feel right to bring a new face at the end of the show.
Plus, his death makes perfect sense. They were too lucky for too long.

Not necessarily. Sakai betrayed them and killed Johnson. Naomi would have been smart enough to realize Sakai messed with the Roccinante. Naomi would have found the issue.
why would they not check for sabotage given aakai was in charge of ship repairs? especially after her prison interview? whole naomi drama was just that, illogical unnecessary melodrama to fill the time.
@@sitting_nut In the book they do but they miss the code .. they explain its notoriously hard to find cause it was only a couple of lines of code in the magnetic bottle controller..and it was quite simple yet flexible (it could be configured for a large number of triggers).. to the point that the hacker that finds it says it probably was used to sabotage several ships in the past but never ever nobody found evidence..until now.

You guys seem confused at a couple things so I thought I'd leave a bit of information
1) Drummer put her first torpedo into Oksana's ship, probably because she knew that of her family, she'd be the least likely to go along with her rebellion, and even then, she only took out the drive to keep it from changing directions or accelerating. The intent was probably to knock the ship out of the fight.
2) The next thing she targets is the light frigate-- the Koto-- because it's probably the only target her belter skiff has a chance of taking out with her torpedoes, even then, I'm pretty sure the only thing it does is allow the Rocinante to kill it with the railgun while it's distracted.
3) Josep, in the disabled Mowteng, overcomes Oksana, and launches their torpedo load at the Serrio Mal, the heavy frigate, which, combined with the Roci's torpedo load, manages to destroy enough torpedoes to allow the Roci to close to railgun range and finish the job with a flyby.
4) Bobby can talk to Naomi, because even though there's no air to carry the vibrations of sound, if you touch helmets, the vibrations of your voice transmit through the helmets themselves. We see them do this throughout the series, in fact, when Bobby's fireteam is wiped out on Ganymede in Season 3, after their comms get jammed, we see them do this.
Sound can't travel through space, but it can live on in vibrations through objects.
You can hear the sound from helmet to helmet by contact. Let the vibration transfer over.

@@Cbricklyne To be fair, if they skew the angle of Roci's run at the Serrio Mal more towards the top, it would be more helpful. Since both are Martians ships, the Serrio Mal tail kind of look like the Roci. The run at the Koto is fine since the audience can really see the Koto's nose that does not look like anything like the Roci.
I suppose that's what rewatch is for. It's only upon rewatch and a little bit of thinking about the scene to realize it is really lucky that Josef fire all those torpedoes that overwhelm the Serrio Mal's PDC. It allow the Roci to use those torps. as cover and get close enough to strafe the Serrio Mal with multiple rail gun shots.

A short breakdown of the Rocinante battle vs "Drummers" fleet at the start:
-Drummer(Tynan) fires a torpedo at the Dewalt (Oksana & Joseph ship), forcing them to shutdown their drive.
-Drummer orders the Moteng to stand down as well, before she is attacked inside the ship.
-Drummer regains control and fires Tynans 7 remaining torpedos at the Free Navy ship Koto (stolen Martian Destroyer)
-While the Koto is busy with the torpedos, the Rocinante fires a couple of Railgun shots through them, disabling the ship.
-The Rocinante and Free Navy ship Serrio Mal (stolen Martian Heavy Frigate) fire at eachother, both are able to shoot down all torpedos.
-Jospeh in the Dewalt launches all their torpedos at the Serrio Mal.
-While the Serrio Mal is busy dealing with all the Torpedos comming for them, the Rocinante starts strafe hitting them with its railgun, you can see 5 shots go through the Heavy Frigate, until one finally hits the core and destroys it.
Back in season three Holden had a vision inside the nucleus where the Builders of the Protomolecule wiped out whole solar systems like they were trying to cauterize a wound. That was because the Builders themselves were being hunted down by an even more powerful entity.
Holden sees these entities everytime he goes through a ring. Dr. Okoye saw them too when she threw Miller into the "angry eye" at the end of season four. Now it seems that these entities have awakened from their slumber and like Holden said: "They are angry!"
The last pages of the 5th book explain exactly what happened to the Martian ship as it went through the gate. The way it reads, they were simply erased from existence as their molecules were ripped apart.
Alex is a hero while the actor protraying him is a zero.

The way the re-edited and added the reshoots, even though Alex's death was abrupt, it felt seamless for me and it worked well. I would've hated a recast. It would feel strange and change the dynamic of the crew.

Drummer fired on the one of her ships Killing the drive. Then fired on the Koto which the roci killed with its rail gun. Josep then fired on the Serrio Mal, which was also killed by the Roci's rail gun.

And Marco veil threats basically makes the brave and more moral of that crew to stand up and fight while the others comply. In a way is a microcosm of what happen in germany, the aspiring space Hitler that is Marco is increasingly making his people to be complicit with his atrocity.
It's also an metaphor of what is happening to some families in the US right now.

Naomi knew this would be the last time she would be able to see her son. She had to go alone because she knew Marco wouldn’t let her get near Philip if Holden was with her. She was ready to die. After Philip turned her away, she was ready to sacrifice herself so she wouldn’t be used against Holden. The only reason she didn’t kill herself was because of the trap set to lure the Roci. She wasn’t working hard to be rescued or stay alive... she did everything to try and keep them away

They had already wrapped up filming before the Cas stuff came to light, so they had to add a couple of scenes and some dialogue to make it work. I think the did a good job overall.

I think it was as subtle as the show can be at times, but we've seen in the past how taxing high-G burns can be, and even the loop that Naomi's ship was taking by the end looked kind of crazy loopy (remember that Naomi, though falling behind due to lack of thrust, was still travelling at high speeds on the same course). Bobbie warned him how dangerous it could be, especially after all they'd already done ("stroke out" being a term she used).
And then you see the course Alex had come up with to catch Naomi's ship when he thought they had time. It was a series of like 8 incredibly tight loops he was staring at. Imagine how much faster or more recklessly he came in when he saw her situation on the float.
Yes, the show could have had him not stroke out there, his luck and body hold, but I think they did establish the stakes... it's just hard to feel that way given the fact that there wasn't a bit more build and due to all the surrounding stuff.
One of Marco's ships is the same model as the Roci but with different coloring. Might trick you to think that Josep isn't the coolest cat in space.

It's not the same model. It's the Roci's bigger brother. The Roci is a frigate, the Serrio Mal is a heavy-frigate. In its "vanilla" configuration, the Serrio Mal would pummel the Roci into dust. But the Roci has several aftermarket upgrades and a more skilled crew.
The heavy frigate differs mostly in long range fighting capabilities as it sports the same class Epstein drive and an equal number of PDC arrays, i.e. six. The key difference (beside size) is that it sports four more torpedo bays, and can thus carry two to three times more torpedos than the Roci. The railgun is what makes the Roci significantly more dangerous as its small size means it can manoever much faster than the heavy frigate (if that was also to be outfitted with a fixed keel-mounted railgun).

The comments about Naomi making a dumb move is interesting, and possibly shows that a lot of the people watching this show don't have kids. It was easy to put Filip away in her mind when she didn't think he was in danger, but Marco's antics would have gotten him killed. If that was my child, I'd have done the exact same thing. Common sense doesn't come into it. The truly harder decision was to finally leave him to his father when she saw that Filip was beyond reach.
@28:10 - The point was better made subtly IMO. Bobbi warned Alex beforehand not to do the high G turn and said that they could stroke out if he tried it again with a damaged ship, then Alex sounded a little tired later when he communicated with Bobbi and Naomi. Plus, the show demonstrated throughout the series how rough on the body the maneuver can be. That's all that was needed. It would have probably been overkill if they had spelled out anymore than that, how Alex could die.
I agree with Suraj. Season 3 was honestly the best.
I think recasting Alex would be hard because of cast chemistry. you bring a new actor in who is to say he would have that same lived in chemistry that we had and the cast had with the original actor. I think that would have been far too awkward and transitioning to it being Bull taking the helm is just a good option. So really I feel like they went with their best option all things considered in that situation.
Keep in mind that the belters have no reason to leave our solar system since they can't survive on any of the alien planets (Naomi showed why last season). It looks like the Martians are trying to use the proto molecule to use some alien technology in another system (which explains why the Martian lady was so intent on asking Alex about his experience on the alien planet). I also don't think that last scene meant the Martian ship was destroyed. Seemed to me that last scene was meant to show the other aliens being "woken" or "antagonized?"'; leading to them playing a much bigger role in next season. My theory is the Martians will be manipulated by the evil aliens in one system while Marcos continues his war in our system.
Not all Belters can't adapt to or survive in the new worlds.

There should be just as much opportunity for belter stations in the other solar systems through the gates as there is in the home system. If they wanted, most of the Belters could have fucked completely out of Sol forever and setup their own space utopias, while still having regular enough transit of vital goods to/from the home system. Earth wouldn't have the energy or impetus to go out of their way to bother them.
So I don't see why the Belters don't basically search for one system with a super good asteroid belt and lots of dwarf planets to work with, and spend their own energy developing them. The Illus colonists had the right idea, mining lithium and shipping it back to Sol; but ideally they would have developed the space around the Illus system, spent the time to pioneer and establish a viable trade route, and then facilitated those who could go down the well to secure for them some mining operations; as well as the Earther teams who would inevitably come. Building orbital shipyards that could then build and maintain the unprecedented demand for new cargo ships and fuel depots and so-on in order to start moving these goods through the rings to the various colonies and back to Sol.
If the Belters just capitalized on the new opportunity to position themselves as the connective tissue between these worlds, they'd quickly build a railroad empire to rival the UN and any of the other colonies that would rise up over the decades. Sure some of their offspring would end up being planetary based, but their lineage as coming from the stars would still be there, and in time those communities would be more likely to empathize and support Belter causes. In time, they'd outnumber Earth's population and power.

The ship was eaten by the gate aliens. In the book, thirteen ships had already been destroyed going through the gates. I would have liked the see bobby rescue Naomi as it was in the book, riding in on a missile...So Dr.Strangelove.

the free navy ships were 2 of drummers fleet and 2 ex-MCRN ships, Drummer took out one with her salvo of missles and Josep joined Team Drummer and fired on the 2nd giving the rosi time to line up the rail gun and take it out
3rd season was the best imo
Don't worry about being confused about the ships during the space combat. I've read other comment sections and others have found it hard to know what ship was which especially since the other Martian ship was a close class to the Roci.

Alex's death is how Fred dies in the books so suddenly dying of a stroke from high g isn't unusual. The Ty and that Guy address this especially how death just happens when you aren't expecting it
The novella about Erich as a space gangster is called Auberon. It's set after the events of book 7, however, which means it contains massive spoilers for the show.
I really recommend The Churn, though, which tells Amos and Erich's backstory. We only got some glimpses this season.
Also, they have clearly been setting up storylines that go beyond book/season 6. I'm almost certain there will be more to come after the final season.
At a ring near Uranus we got a R.U.D. of the Barkheath (rapid unscheduled disassembly). There are so many questions about the floaty orange aliens I hope season 6 gets to. After Pandora opened her box all that was left was hope.

As the Razorback approached Naomi they were on full burn they had to stop quickly so the G-Force would have been enormous to stop, or they would shot right by her. I heard a rumor that the show would stop at Season 6 which will adapt Babylon's Ashes....but why are they then hinting at the stuff with Laconia that takes place afterwards? It's gonna leave people pissed if they stop the show next season before the Laconia storyline really kicks in.

Chrisjen's speech was nice, but she certainly didn't start the series that way with her Earth must come first BS. And I want to believe she's change but in the back of my mind I wonder if push came to shove she'd revert back to who she was in season one.

An attack from a Belter faction devastated Earth and Chrisjen was still able to seperate them from the Belt.
I think it always comes down to what Amos said. When push comes to shove, the tribe shrinks. It's to Chrisjen's testament that she didn't let Marco's actions shrink the tribe. She has at least proven that her "us vs them" mentality has shifted to include all of humanity. She doesn't want to radicalize the entire Belt, it's true. But her decision was not merely strategic but also compassionate.
Season one and two Chrisjen would have slung nukes back at the belt and not even broken a sweat over it. Her time with Bobbie and the Roci crew has opened her eyes. So yeah, she's grown. Which is cool to see. But she's tough as nails when she needs to be.
I did like that they at least had Alex's death mean something.

Alex's death will need to come with an asterisk for future viewers, cause it felt very flat for a main character.
I get Anvar had to leave, but it still sucks we didn’t get to truly experience the death of one of the main characters. I mean Bobbie foreshadowed Alex’s rescue could stroke them out but it still felt really glossed over just to get it over with.
Meanwhile- that Naomi scene was friggin epic. Focusing on nothing but her face the whole time and then seeing Bobbie come around her side was emotional as hell. Amos is the absolute man! Love the week to week release and hope they do s6 the same way. Friggin amazing season!

Alex died in the show the way Fred died in the books. And they have been talking about the possibility of stroke from high Gs from the very beginning. Also, you may have missed it, but the monitors showed an issue with him and he made some comments that suggested that he wasn't feeling great before he passed.

LITERALLY before that happens, Bobbie spells it out and tells Alex that they both can't take another hard burn since they're juiced to the gills and might probably stroke out.
She actually says it, and it happens to Alex (who's older than her by about 10-15 years and more at risk of stroking out than she is)
They couldn't have laid it out any more clearly than that (Even though they didn't plan it out that way and edited the whole thing after the fact to show the scene as we se it.).
But to claim it came out of nowhere, after all the information they gave is more a sign that you're bad at paying attention than it is a reality of how it actually went down.

Holden was telling Fred Johnson how he felt every time he went through the gates, like they were watching him and getting angry. Fred said no one else reported anything. The pause shows why no one else notices anything, they go through completely unaware they are not alone.

Except it looks like while they are paused, the ship continues to move through the ring. It looks like the engine just sputters out right before it goes through. I think they were destroyed by the red things.

It's the vibrations when their helmets touch. The sound waves move the glass slightly and that transfers into the other helmet letting the other person hear.

@@kevinjustin7646 Belters would not be able to even walk in a ship under more than 1G. Belters live their lives anywhere between 0G and 0.3G. 1G is already a heavy toll for most.
Also, they were on an intercept course, not chasing them. They wouldn't need to match the Roci's speed. Not to mention that the Roci was already reducing their burn to widen the gap between the Belters and the Razorback.
Getting smashed on the back of the head with a fire extinguisher and falling face first on a railing is already a pretty good way to die. No need to introduce high-G into the mix.

It was a pretty awesome sequence but, definitely better on re-watch. Once you know what's actually happening.
many people are confused about what happened, and I was about to explan for multiple x time, but then I saw this comment, that heavy frigate was about to eat the Roci, but then Josep fired 18torpedoes at them.
Josep is my unsung hero of the episode he ultimately chose to side with Camina and helped them take out the frigate. He also warns Oksana it doesn’t matter, the family is done one way or another.
This demonstrates that a railgun isn't enough. You have to get close enough to use it. In both cases a screen of torpedoes helped the Roci get to railgun range & seal the deal. But it also illustrates how a 2-ship team of torp-launcher & railgun shooter can take down a much bigger destroyer or frigate. War is a team sport.
@@allyourmoney Roci could've used torpedoes there instead of the railgun, it would be the same, but they are low on those even when packing ful(only 20), and their aftermarket super light railgun fires a projectiles at little less than 10km/s so they have to be in range of PDC's(less than 50km)for it to be useful, cause 5sec travel is more than enough to dodge the railgun projectiles..

@14:45 Naomi could hear Bobbie talking because they were in contact. The sound was all muffled sounding because it was being conducted through their helmets.
Remember back in season 2 ep 1 when Holden and Naomi were on the outside of the ship. They turned off their radios and touched their helmets together so they could talk without anybody else hearing.
It's also how Bobbie talked to one of their Crewmates on Ganymede after their coms were jammed

The death of Alex vs. recasting must have been a difficult decision, but I firmly believe that this is a gift to the book readers like myself. They have seamlessly integrated the brilliant Cara Gee into multiple other Belter characters without cluttering the story, and I expect they can write some incredible new content that works in the the grand context. Book readers will be get the joy of the unknown but anticipated:)

This was such a perfect ending to this season. It’s like watching what season 7 of GoT should’ve been. All the seasons of build up pay off and the stakes are phenomenally high.
