I respect the Rescue swimmer crews. My dad was a P3 / S3 aircrewman from 1977-2001. Iv been an AW since 2004 and retire AUG2024. Im not a SAR guy but those dudes are legit. I skydive for fun recreationally and have 170 skydives and 1 cutaway. I hope you SAR guys do get to start jumping like you mentioned. That would be sick and probably attract more recruits.
LOL...That 53E is a MONSTER. I love that bird. I too ret. 21yrs (4 USMC 17 ARMY)of service. Was 0481(Landing Support Specialist) in the Marines. Static/ sling loads was our specialty. And night Ops was the BEST.
I became an AW in '77..Went thru swimmer school an NAS Miramar...Trained by a Master Chief SEAL because there wasn't a "standard" school curriculum yet.. We started with 40 or so and graduated with 6 ...I went thru the HS-10 training in the SH3-A Sea King.( great bird), and flew with HS-4 in the fleet. Im 66 and would jump out of a helo today if they'd let me ! SOML !
Hey Darien! I’ve been following along with your content and as a Navy prospect have a few questions myself. I’m trying to decide on the contract I’d like to sign and have a strong interest in Navy aviation. The AWR/AWS rate looks interesting but I’ve also been looking into AD and AT/AE because they deal with the mechanical/electrical aspect of aircrafts which I think would look good post-service for a career in contracting. However, the AIRR contract looks like so much fun. Is there a lot of technical training pertaining to the mechanical aspects of your platform? Or in other words, as an AWR/AWS do you also get to work on your helo or is that where the line is drawn and that work is passed on to the techs? Sorry for the long paragraph, just haven’t been able to get much information online other than Reddit. I guess my “dream” rate would be one that is both technical and adventurous. Thank you in advance!
Hey. I’m glad you are able to enjoy the videos. I’ll try to tell you that nothing is stopping you from working on the helo, as a helper, but not as a regular job description. If you know that you want to do that type of work, then do that. AIRR is more exciting and adventurous, but not the only thing you may find enjoying. I’ll try to make a quick video on this topic soon.
A Yr flying in& out of Central America& Middle East, 3 diffrent carriers, sleeping with my duffel under a 12" steampipe😳🙄 Flying off& on Days on land running a flightline& night time recon. Days on ship launching& recovering for DAYS!! I was with a recon jet crew first. Then helos when i got back stateside.. ANYWAY A YR OF THIS.. GET BACK TO PHILLIPINES?? 2 DAYS HOME... KNOCK ON DOOR AT 3AM... WE GOT 2 HRS, GRAB YOUR SHIT& LETS GO..😒😏 NO CLUE WHERE TO NEXT!!!😳😏 BEST TIME OF MY LIFE!!! E-5 80-86..
I've been watching your videos since I enlisted last month. It's helped leaps and bounds towards knowing exactly what I'm getting myself into. I do have a question, I unwittingly signed an AIRC contract despite vehemently expressing I wanted to pursue AIRR. My question is do they allow you to switch rates depending on how you qualify in NACCS. I was told that dry aircrewman are limited to AWF, or AWO. Thank you again for the great content you do.
I’m glad I could help you out. Sometimes, they’ll let you jump ship, but that’s not always the case. Ask your instructors. You enlisted? Where are you now then?
aircrew class 8243 . back then you became a swimmer depending on your class standing after "A" school. I remember my master chief telling me since I was going to an H-2 squadron, I would have to go to rescue swimmer school. I looked at the Master chief and asked " what the f_ _ _ is a rescue swimmer?" He laughed and told me " You'll find out." While trying to hold back his laughter. I had the pilots lower me on the hoist into the Caribbean chasing after a mail bag. I guess you can count that as a rescue.
Shoutout to AOC (NAC/AW/SW) ALLEN. a real og! Special shout out to Master Chief Hilligas too another og. They the real mvps. Love the videos. Bring back some memories for sure.

Aircrew only or AIRR? 6 months is plenty of time. Just start swimming and working on your crawl, side stroke, breast stroke and back stroke. Get good at running if you aren’t already and everything else will fall in line. Get comfortable doing water survival-type exercises. Swim with old clothes to simulate a flight suit and see how it is.

I was wondering what your experiences were like and if any air rescue swimmers were able to get into the program. There isn’t too much information on the program so anything would help! Thanks
I’ll put that in the other parts, but I am familiar with it. Not too much, but a good friend of mine is currently at SRT-1 out here in Virginia Beach. He’s an AWS as well
