What Does an Endorsement Deal Really Mean?

- A Video some of you have been asking for today! I wanted to give some of my own insight into what an endorsement deal is all about and how mine came to be. There's people with a lot more experience in this than me but I just wanted to share mine! I'd love to hear from you guys on your thoughts about this and if you've ever worked with a company. I hope some of you all find this interesting or insightful. Until next time, Peace!
Regardless of the video subject matter it's just fun to hang out with Tim for a bit.
Ayeee thank you James!! I appreciate that
@@TimAvenMusic Even tho we don't "know ya" ..............Yes, it is fun to hang out with ya. 🎸🎸🎸🎸
Tim you really found your nitch with this channel. You have attracted a group of people who like being around you, your genuiness always comes across. Those first videos about what it's like to be a musician in Nashville really struck home with people so they stayed with you after that! Me too I'm one of the regulars. Good show.
I just got an endorsement from a cable builder from Montana. A misconception a lot of folks have is that once you're endorsed, everything is free. And while that is the case sometimes, I've found that a more common deal is that we get an artist discount. It's still really cool and something that makes me feel like a "real musician" sometimes. Haha.
Sometime soon I need to get down to Nashville to see you play live! I find you to be authentic and its refreshing.
You single handedly caused me to try out the Silver Sky SE and now it's replaced my Fender Pro II and you are to blame 😆 great video as always Tim.
dude congrats. Those things sound so awesome always wanted to try a PRS myself. Really enjoying your channel. Keep up the good work man.
You make me want to pick up my guitar again.
Good video Tim. I always do a shout out/ #/ tag for the musical gear I use. I just spoke with via fb texting to my pedal and microphone maker. I don't think I'm out there enough yet to be considered for a sponsorship. But you are. Congratulations on your growing career. Keep these video's coming.
Great playing, Tim! 👍👏
From a bedroom guitar player, this is so cool to see what it looks like behind the curtain. Keep doing what you do and enjoy the ride.
Thanks Tim it’s always fun to hang out with you for a bit!
Thanks Tim! Love the channel! Keep the great content coming!
Thank you!! More to come!!
even as a beginner musician with no experience at all I always love these because they will help me in the future if I stay dedicated.
Really enjoying the content Tim. I play many instruments but focus my time on tenor banjo. This seems to be a not so common instrument in Nashville.
Great video Tim. Thx. Great real content. We appreciate you.
Thank you! I’m glad you got something out of it!
Hey Tim love your vids and esp your soulful playing and sweet guitar sounds! That chord is a major 7th with added 2d, in the 1st inversion (the third is on the bottom). Beautiful chord indeed! Keep doing what you're doing and thanks for always being authentic.
Thank you so much for watching and the chord info, I appreciate it!!
That was another great video, Tim. I teach marketing at a local university in New York, and one of the topics is influencers, as it is a huge part of social media marketing. What I tell my students is that they must ask and answer the question of "what's in it for me," from the other person's perspective. In this case, we all know why we would want a product endorsement deal, but ask from the perspective of the product manufacturer, what's in it for me? If you can't come up with quantifiable reasons why your endorsement will benefit the company, you can't expect them to consider you a viable endorser.
Keep up the good work!
Continue to enjoy the content and hope to see you play live down the road! It took me about 30 years to get my first PRS after seeing Mitch Easter play one through a Matamp way back in 1988 (ish) ... but they don't disappoint and are slightly addictive!
Awesome to hear that! What do you have?
@@TimAvenMusic I have a 2014 custom 24 (got used - obsidian finish) and a 17 custom 22 semi special. Both are terrific but I've never played a bad one ;)
Some sweet lead playing my friend, thanks for sharing, enjoyed the groove!
Thank you!!
Very informative video
PRS chose wisely
Endorsements can be good depending on the deal. Companies like Fender or Gibson can be good for you if the are the brands you use. The fact that you are being approach means that you have value for their brands because your a building a reputation for being a talented and sort after musician who is building a reputation as a great guitarist so if they approach you it means they want you to play their guitars so you have nothing to lose by cutting a deal that suits you and if they are keen to have you promote their brand then they will be more accommodating. I am so impressed with your playing and looking forward to the next installment. stay safe J.
Thanks for being you!
Dang it man, you are bout to hit 10k🍻
We’re almost there!!
Great little in site Tim. Thanks man.
I’m glad you think so, thank you!!
Tim you are such a nice guy and i am rooting 4 u peace out
Your phrasing over that chord progression had tons of soul!!!
Hey thanks a bunch for that!!
I own a PRS Standard 24 and still learning it. Another PRS artist I follow is Dany Villareal-Velez of The Warning.
So excellent!
Thank you!!
Hi Tim, Yes, I did find this video interesting & insightful. I'm not a player but I've seen a lot of different guitars played. I do understand most (not all) of the vocabulary & yes, I know what a Humbucker pickup is. As a female viewer, I hope you don't mind if I use typical female words to express what I hear when I hear your guitar. It's appealing, attractive & most of all it sounds pretty. That's kind of a lame word to express what I'm hearing but it sounds so good it's pretty. The sound makes me calm.
Maybe I could differentiate using a rock guitar like a Dimebag Darrell Dean, Jackson or those 80's BC Rich. Most wouldn't consider those "pretty". Ha... Know it's your playing style too but overall I really like the way it produces sound. I've never heard of these guitars until you. Really like learning new things like this. I am interested in the wood the company uses. I'm kind of nerdy like that when it comes to the structure. But no matter what, to me it sounds "pretty" & that's a sincere compliment. Edit - Tim, I almost forgot. What is the significance of the birds inlaid on the fretboard? I'm a bird nerd. Have another channel (Nature) & my name has Bluebird in it. I'll sub from there too. Is there a reason why those specific birds were chosen? I really like it. It's different. I'm surprised they/he didn't use a Wood Thrush. Love that bird. It sounds like a flute which would relate to music.
Dude, you’re 20 times better than that Justin Myers dude. All he does is gear flex about all his vintage shit. You actually approach from a real approach with lessons or transparency of the gigs good and bad.
I don’t know who that is but I appreciate that you enjoy the video. Thank you!
@@TimAvenMusiche’s a Nashville guy with a smaller channel than yours with about 100k worth of vintage gear that loves to shill himself as a “pro Nashville guitarist” . He won’t share anything to do with teaching because his “Fans” must pay him money for any lessons because his skill is that great. According to him.
I have a 1996 Custom 22 that really rocks. Not as brash as a Strat or Tele, but sweet, strong and responsive. Love it. It plus my Peavey Classic 30 make a great simple rig for home use.
I have a 1997 Cu22 10 Top with Dragon pickups. Fantastic guitar.
Sounds like a killer!!
Just got my first PRS and I totally dig it!
Heck yeah! What did you get?
great content! ive gotta go to nashville sometime. Im a piano player
I get harassed and chased from all the big companies to choose and play their gear at least half a dozen times a day………….oh wait, you’re talking endorsements, not advertisement my bad.
Really enjoyed your laid-back content
We're giggin musicans also. Can relate to your vids. 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
Keep consistent with your length I’ll keep watching
I’ve got you!!
It's like a when big name entertainers features all the FLASH , LIGHTS, DANCERS, HUGH BAND and SOUND TRACKS behind them...........gets old FAST. IMO, I much more prefer going to a Sierra Ferrell type concert where it's more of a "raw, real life sound" or an intimate smaller venue and listen to James Taylor, Carol King, Bonnie Raitt. It's not blowing your eardrums out and it sounds "REAL" ! .............Real NICE ! Enjoyable ! Just my opinion. I know my band gets more gigs because we're not deafening loud. Rather they tell me to turn it UP instead of ....................... TURN IT DOWN YOU'RE too F#ckin LOUD ! Where am I goin with this? You're straightforward "Raw" vid's are NICE /Enjoyable. Keep it goin kid.
Brother. You are amazing. Thanks for your mentorship and the videos. Would love to get into contact with you and send you some money for a few lessons!
Hey man thank you so much! Happy to do lessons. If you shoot me a message on Instagram - Timavenmusic I will get you booked!
Have you made a video going into depth on how you use your hx stomp xl?
2:45 it's Bbma9/D. Great voicing! Even better if you drop the 3rd like Todd Rundgren ;)
Hey Tim, I've got an idea. Don't even know if it is possible but a few years back I wrote a song and played it for a sailing site on You-Tube called Sailing into Freedom. Peter first used it on Episode 265 at the one-minute mark and then later on a bunch of times. It's called Sailing to Freedom. Anyway, it would be so cool if you could take it and put a break into it. You can find several takes on it on Burlington Bill including one where my Grandson puts a little rap in the middle. Thanks for your time. Enjoying the channel! Burlington Bill busking on the road and here on you tube.
I'm just a bedroom guitarist, so I'm aware this video wasn't targeted for me. Nonetheless, this was a great watch and had such generally good advice that could be used in many more contexts than trying to land an endorsement deal. 👍
Thank you for the watch! I was hoping that would be the case! I appreciate you!
I too have often gone to that chord without knowing the name. It could be a Bb maj sus2 over D. Used an app.
I’m coming to Nashville 8/16 for the bukovac /Trapp show. Hope to see you there
I think Guthrie doesn't like Tim
@@BobbyCulpepper.srv3fender why not?
@@jonaskarlstrom4152 i dont know why, maybe tim will clue us in one day
I know the story, it’s not that deep.
@@nickl2883 I would think there was a fight of some type
Im not sure why some folks say PRS electrics dont have a soul. Do they all sound somewhat similar? I believe they do, but that isn't a bad thing. IMO, it just means that they have tighter specs they follow. Played a few Fenders and Les Pauls, and it's a crap shoot on what you're going to get as far as sound and build quality. Regardless of what manufacturer you like, the magic happens with the musician. No two players play the same. Most of the sound from any instrument comes from the player and the amp that it's being pushed through.
I agree with this! PRS quality control is just a cut above everyone else
It’s a false impression due to what it takes to find a good Les Paul. QC at Gibson has been so spotty that you have to play through a lot of LPs to find one setup correctly and built well. People play a PRS using the expectation they have when filtering through all the mediocre LPs. PRS QC means any variation is minimal. They all play with as much soul as you bring. The guitar is setup right and built to top spec. PRS are far from soulless.
Carlos Santana put PSR on the map when few people knew of them. So your right companies want their brand associated with recognized artists. Epiphone, Gretch, Rickenbacker, Gibson, had The Beatles. Fender had Hendrix, Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughn, then the Les Paul and Daneletro had Jimmy Page. It's about marketing of course. It benefits both the player and the company. All those artist played the ones they did because they loved them.
Hey Tim. What are your thoughts on Guthrie Trapp? Have you seen him play live in your neck of the woods?
Tim try Nouva guitars in Nashville ???
About 30 years ago, Gibson offered me a sponsorship. They expected me to play their guitars at least 50% of the time, and they would sell guitars to me for a small discount off MSRP. At the time, I could buy a Gibson anywhere for well below MSRP. I said "no thanks" to the sponsorship.
I would bet that's the type of deal that Tim has and is probably the industry standard, better for the manufacturer than the player.
@indianaslim4971 I doubt it. It's a different world today, with social media, then 30 years ago when I was gigging. Manufacturers get a LOT more from an "influencer" with a growing media presence directed at guitar players than they got from a gigging musician in my day. Maybe 5 guitar players would show at a random gig, while probably 100% guitar players are watching Tim's videos. More impact-ful = more value.
@@michaeldavis4969 what you say makes sense, the problem I'm having is the non disclosure of what his endorsement involves, not only in the video but in his replies in this comment section, I can understand a stomp box company giving away a box or two on an endorsement deal but a $4500 guitar?, the fact that he's evasive answering the question leads me to think he gets a discount, which smells like a marketing strategy of let's stroke this young players ego and we'll have a lifetime customer.
"Evasive" is a strong word. I don't think we are entitled to know the specifics of his business arrangement. I only shared my story because it DIDN'T happen.
@@michaeldavis4969 The title of this video is "What does an endorsement deal REALLY mean", I capitalized the word really to illustrate where the entitlement (your word, mine would be expectation) originates.
Paul said that if you have a choice of guitars and you decide to play the PRS then they have done their job.
They should give you a PRS amp🥲Love your playing.
I'd been playing guitar 15 years before I got my first electric (mid-'80s MIJ Strat, $350-I had no idea how happy I'd be about that purchase 30 years on!). It may say as much about me as the guitars, but I've played a few PRSs and so far haven't found one with any soul.
Soul comes from inside you.
It’s a tool to do a job. PRS gets the job done.
i had a slingerland drum endorsement deal in 1980
Did it entail free drums or discounts on drums?
Lou V**o?????? PRS rep. He used to represent ORANGE Amps too (I believe) .... Jason Aldean's guitar player also uses a PRS........
Ok Tim you can change your guitar or your amp, you can even change the content of your videos but please never change your hair 🙂
Hahaha thank you!!
So what do you get out of the endorsement deal?
A boost to his ego and most likely 10% off retail....
Discounted gear, free gear, and a ten that can help you with that gear and any repairs or replacements that you might need are all examples of something someone might find with a deal
😂😂 with that attitude you’d be luck if they gave you 10%!
@@TimAvenMusic the lack of a clear answer tells me my reply is correct, at 68 years old I doubt that I would get an endorsement deal so I have no qualms about expressing my opinion that manufacturer's are taking advantage of people's ego for marketing purposes, it's one thing to give a player a stomp box or two, it's something else to give a $4,500 guitar away.
@@indianaslim4971 you got owned 😎😎
That looked like a Dm7#5 or I guess you can call it Dm7Aug ;)
