Good question. In the New Testament, the term "saints" is a synonymous term with Christians. It comes from the Greek word "hagios" which means "holy ones, pure, separated." It acknowledged the separation of Christians from the rest of the world by means of their devotion to Jesus. It was not until much later that some religious groups turned the word into a special classification of Christian. That idea is not found in the NT.
