    @scotttild No, not billions and no, not restoring. Their budget is $10 million to perform long over due preventive maintenance on the hull. I believe half the funding came from the state of New Jersey and the rest came from donations both large and small. The ship is now a museum and it takes lots of willing volunteers and many generous donors to keep her floating.

    • @Lollygagger-k4p
      @Lollygagger-k4p 5 місяців тому

      It has been suggested and rejected, based upon the logistics of just getting enough fuel into her. That's a truck that gets 5mpg, compared to modern destroyers that get 12mpg. She would need to travel with two oilers - just for her alone.
      Other concerns are the simple age and wear on the machinery itself. In preservation, it can last a long time, but these ships were buit with a short life span in mind, and to justwin a war.
      Re-tooling does not even exists anymore, and no arsenal builds the 16" shells, leaving the originals from the 1950's which can be unstable.
      Even if they removed the big guns and turrets, as well as all below deck suypporting structure, and replaceed all that with 300+ vertical launch tubes, the engines and related gear are all still very old.
      While it is certainly fast enough to keep up with the fleet, repairs would be complicated and no replacement parts exist.
      Making it into an Arsenal Ship by removing the turrets and most of the super structure would be awesome, but modern subs are more effective at that, and theyare already paid for as wellas being almost impossible to find and hit.

      @@Lollygagger-k4p New Jersey's fuel capacity is approx. 2.3 MILLION gallons. That would last for four days at 33 knots, or over a month at 15-16 knots. In WW2, other than protecting the carriers, the other big job of the four Iowa-class battleships was to serve as a "gas station" for the dozens of destroyers accompanying the Pacific battle fleets. For the '80s deployments, this was still true--part of the recommissioning of the Iowas was conversion from bunker-C to marine distillate, what the rest of the fleet was using at the time. Not that I'm saying that New Jersey could or should come back, I'm just saying that your fuel argument is not a valid point.

      @@SomeRandomHuman717 Fair enough. I was just going on what I read out there in public spaces. Fuel consumption was among the several anti-arguments.

    Isn't the Jersey the same battleship that laid waste to Beruit Lebanon right after the US Marine barracks was bombed and collapsed to the ground killing over two hundred marines? (And, the size of that dry-dock is insane)

      Yes.
      But a modern "Battleship" could have done it from way further away with tomahawk missiles

      That all depends.. in a modern aircraft carrier you'll never see the rounds impact before the adversary is at the bottom of the sea
