  • The Dance of Shiva, a dance performance by Aparna Ramaswamy (Co-artistic director of Ragamala Dance Company), in celebration of Mia’s recently conserved and reinstalled sculpture of Shiva Nataraja.
    Mia commissioned Aparna Ramaswamy, co-director of Ragamala Dance Company, to celebrate the sculpture’s reemergence. The company works within the Bharatanatyam tradition of classical Indian dance, which developed in the temples of southern India along with the famous form of Shiva Nataraja itself. In January, Ramaswamy performed the new piece at Mia, choreographed by her teacher, Alarmel Valli, to music composed by a south Indian king in the 19th century.
    “Shiva, in his form as Nataraja, is performing the Ananda Tandava-the dance of bliss-in a state of heightened enlightenment,” Ramaswamy says. “In this piece, I describe him as the magnificent, the glorious-austere and fearsome. Yes, he dances in the halls of the temples but also on the cremation grounds. He is the one who wears ash on his body. He wears a garland of skulls. . . . I describe the rapture the devotee feels in witnessing his dance and asking for his grace.”
    Ramaswamy, who has known this image of Shiva Nataraja all her life, remains in awe of its sweeping symbolism. “In one hand is his rattle drum, the sound of the universe, everything he creates,” she says. “In his other hand is the flame of destruction that destroys everything he creates. The connection of the sacred and the mythological, the body and the cosmos-it all comes together in this statue.”

    This dance is so professionally performed that I really see god Shiva and not a female dancer. It's so scary and fascinating at the same time.

    OMG! Whoever recorded this video missed the whole point. Some of the most important poses were completely ignored and they focused on the face of the dancer. She is fantastic though.

    This video could really benefit from having way more context. What is the historic connection exactly between this dance form and the iconography of Shiva in the MIA sculpture? It is merely that both reference Shiva? Or is there a far more substantive connection?

      By my extremely barebones understanding of Hindi mysticism, it may have something to do with the Hindu version of The End. Right now - according to Hinduism - Kali, Goddess of (among many other things) Time is dancing over Shiva's chest. The specifics elude me, but this is meant to symbolize how Kali creates cycles of strife (i.e. the normal cycles of life in the universe where you suffer Life, progress or regress on your path as a bodhisattva based on how you bore all that, then either achieve enlightment through what you have learnt and experienced or tossed back in for another spin)
      When she stops dancing, Shiva gets up, then starts dancing himself. When _He_ does it, though, it is both the trigger and cause of the collapse of the universe AFAIK.

    If I had to pick a favourite deity it would be Shiva or Mahakala, who is shiva anyway, because his role it to commit what many would consider atrocious in destroying what we hold dear. His role is to remind us of the impermanence of reality and expose us to the truth, that is enlightenment.

      according to vedas all three are same .. gods different names represent his chahracteristics and qualities even u can search sanskrit meaning of shiva vihnu and brahma, other than these 3 names he hs thousands of other names , but its highly interpreted to make a buisness out of it

    • @rick17345
      @rick17345 Місяць тому

      Not an expert but as far I know there are several interpretations. The three of them constitute the so-called "Trimurti" (improperly translated as "Trinity"). Whether they are the same or not it's very hard to say, consider that Hinduism is not a proper "religion" but rather a family of religions, many of them dedicated to just one of these gods (Shivaism, Vishnuism, etc). Let alone local cults and autonomous sects.
      I don't know, I've always handled this theory of an underlying unity in polytheism with care, not because I completely reject it but just because I've always felt that it's a subtle strategy of monotheism to penetrate it...
