    I enjoyed this tour of your collection. One pen you ought to look out for that I think you would like is Opus 88’s little Fantasia. It’s about the size a TWSBI Mini. They don’t make them any more, but Cult Pens still has them on their website. I got one and then got 2 more for travel and sketching. Favorite sketching pen is probably my Pilot 823 F with De Atramentis Document Brown. Now I’m waiting for TWSBI to come out with a Mini Prussian Blue or Punch Pink and a Vac Mini Iris!

    • @MysteryArts
      @MysteryArts  3 роки тому

      I've been looking at the Fantasia actually. My only concern is the length of the pen because it can't be posted. It's not too short without the cap is it? Mini Prussian Blue would be amazing! And your Pilot 823 F sounds dreamy for sketching. I would like to get an 823 F one day.

I really love your Taccia "expensive" pen case with that sort of burgundy brown color. Do you think that shorter fountain pens (like a little under 5 inches) would fare well in it size-wise? 35:39 I've owned four TWSBI pens, three of them have either broken or had serious cracking. Actually come to think of it, my current (and only one now) is starting to develop the cracks like yours is showing. For a 90 dollar pen, that's pretty unexceptable. If this one goes I'll probably buy another mini vac and just be super careful. Kind of crazy though... I have hundreds of fountain pens, most cheaper than the TWSBI and none of those have broken.

I am in awe of your collection, I'm fairly new to fountain pens and love seeing the different options at different price points. Thanks again for a very imformative and enjoyable review.

    • @MysteryArts
      @MysteryArts  3 роки тому +2

      Oh boy, it’s hard to pick a top 10. However, for a first gold nib there are several good options: Pilot vanishing point (amazingly smooth, bouncy and nice to write with, but some people find the placement of the clip uncomfortable-it depends on your grip), Lamy 2000, and Platinum 3776 are “reasonably” priced options that are generally reliable. They all have different feels when writing. Sometimes you can find good deals on Amazon or websites like endless pens, but if the price is similar, I would purchase from Goulet or Vanness pens. If you can find a good deal on a Pelikan, that would be my number one choice for a gold nib (m400 or m600)-endless pens often has amazing deals on Pelikans.

    Funny, I have the exact same Conklin and it was absolute crud. Made me disgusted just looking at it. After a few months of no use, I decided to do whatever I could to fix the problems I was having. Basically it was drier than dry. I widened the tines with a razor blade - really beyond caring at that point - and that helped a tad. So, I then took the blade to the feed. Ran it right down the middle a bunch of times. Slightly better. Took a wider exacto-knife and went down the same feed channel a few times. Now, it's wet and writes really well. Could turn into a fav.

    • @MysteryArts
      @MysteryArts  3 роки тому +2

      Conklin is one of those brands that I will never buy another of because of my troubles with the one I have--it's not worth the trouble. I currently have a Goulet nib in this Duragraph and that works well, but, again, not wort it. The only other brand I feel that way about is Monteverde. I've gotten a couple of cheap pens from them that have just cracked in half after about a year or so and the nibs were always crap.

      @@MysteryArts Haha. That's quite a coincidence. I've only purchased one Monteverde and it came cracked. Sent it back and I have no desire to buy another. Twsbi Ecos are actually pretty good for sketching. You could go up to the Twsbi 580 or 580 mini for a smoother nib. I’ve also found that the inexpensive Pilot Kakuno in extra fine is nice for sketching. You don’t have to go expensive to get a good sketch pen. So interesting you found the Narwal nib to be scratchy and very fine. I just purchased a limited edition "Peter Pen" from Narwal and my experience is exactly the opposite. Very smooth and I centered the feed line as it was so far off. The thing is now a gusher and the fine nib writes like a bold. I have super tiny writing and prefer the Japanese fines or extra fines. Was the Franklin Christoph the only nib you tried? I'm looking to put an extra fine nib in the pen and need guidance...the pen body is stunning...any thoughts?

    • @MysteryArts
      @MysteryArts  2 роки тому +1

      I talk a bit about what setup I have in my Narwhals here: ua-cam.com/video/Pr4i0Eu4eEg/v-deo.html I replaced the feed with a Jowo feed and it really helped with the gushing, so that might be a good idea for you if you want to have a lighter ink flow with an extra fine. All the Jowo nibs I've tried in the Narwhals have worked well with the new Jowo feed. I haven't tried any Bock nibs.

      @@MysteryArts I decided to try reverse writing before spending any more money and what a surprise. The nib produces a nice extra fine line and writes very smoothly. This came as an aha moment. None of my other nibs produce a smooth writing experience in the reverse writing position. Tolerable but not enjoyable like the Norwal. I don't know if this is accidental or intentional, but for the moment I'll take it...

    • @MysteryArts
      @MysteryArts  3 роки тому

      I did change out the nib on that Retro 51. They are compatible with Jowo nib units, so it’s very easy to change-just unscrew the nib unit and screw another on (you just need to take the converter out while you do it because the converter connects to the nib unit). Most of my compatible nib units are from Franklin Christoph (which are great quality). You can just buy the nib unit and swap away. It takes a size six nib unit.

    • @MysteryArts

      I have a bunch of nibs stored in small boxes with dividers so that they don't get bend or damaged while I store them. I do actually use a lot of the nibs I swap out on other cheaper pens. I usually put higher end standard nibs on moonmans, jinhaos, PenBBS, etc. pens that do not come with great nibs. I've also been trying out some homemade custom grinds on some of my spare nibs.
