Earthbound has the opposite scenario: your in-game dad calling your character periodically to ask if you should be wrapping up your session, and expressing disappointment if you want to keep playing.
There is no game: wrong dimesion is taking it 10M steps further and literally puts arrows pointing on the quit button since there literally is no game even know thwy payed money to play there is no game so its a scam but there actually is a game but even the game is like "please quit if you see this save icon to maximize the chance of corrupting ur save file" just to get comedy points
The best thing about minecraft is that it’ll just let you save and quit. In the title screen it also sometimes show the text “have you done your homework?” Or “take time for your self”

oh my fucking god this brings back memories I had actually gotten a used tomodachi life game, and I had explored the island for a bit, but wanted to delete to make my own island. God, it really hurt.

some other games are the total opposite. there’s one section in “Bowser’s Inside Story” where you literally cannot play for a short time, the game forces you to take a break lol. and Warioware D.I.Y encourages you to take a break after a little while, that way you can be more creative in your projects
The worst guilt trip ever belongs to Tomogatchi. You leave it alone for 5 minutes and it'll literally die and play you a sound loudly to let you know it's dead.
I remember getting a tomogatchi that i didn't want, so i just left it until the battery ran out because i didn't know how to turn the time wasting thing.
This is the opposite of the original Dungeon Keeper. It had a clock that kept track of time in the real world. At midnight it would proclaim " it is the witching hour curses are half off" At about 2am it would start in with nagging you to go to sleep. " Are you still there? The imps would like to lock up" or " There is a large rectangular object in the next room, GO TO BED!"
The most horrifying guilt trip I can think of has got to be the older version of OneShot. If you quit the game, Niko died, and when you opened up the game again, you were treated to a dark, empty main screen with a shattered light bulb and Niko's discarded scarf and hat lying on the ground. I still get chills thinking about it.

I go in every year or so and play for a few days and them forget about them again. Thankfully they look pathetic but never actually die! I have some pretty awesome stuff in my account that I don't want to lose!
For those that do take long, long breaks from Neopets and haven't figured this trick out... You can book your pet into the Neolodge for one day. Just click to make sure it has the restaurant. The cheapest lodge will do. That's 5 np for the lodge and 5 np for the restaurant. For 10 np you can get your pet completely filled on food and max happiness. You're welcome.

I think I remember one: There's this rubbish FPS game called "Isle of the Dead" for the PC. If you wanted to quit the game, the game prompts with a question of "taking the coward's way out?". Answering "yes" would play an animation of your character putting the shotgun against his chin and pulling the trigger, followed by the supposed main antagonist of the game (a mad scientist) laughing at your demise. Because nothing says guilt trip than actually displaying it and having someone laugh at it too.

This reminds me of Drawn To Life. If you close your DS when the games still open, the characters all go "awwww" and are sad. They cheer when you open it again. It's a guilt trip and a half

I was hoping they'd include one of the most gut-wrenching examples: Donkey Kong 64. Basically, once you hit Save and Quit, a cutscenes plays with depressing music as you watch K. Rool destroy DK Island with his huge death ray, a deep evil laugh echoing as the screen goes dark. The only way to lose the fight is by quitting.
Ikr I will be wanting to play something but will deny to do this other more important thing, and when I'm done all of my self care goes to recovering. Usually for me burnout means I really can't think, so mindless activities are nice. Not sure if this makes sense or not.

Nothing wrong with burnout. Right now ACNH is giving me the structure and daily to-do list that I'm not managing in real life, but I'm sure I'll burnout at some point too. (Of course, you could always reset your clock for a couple of days since you last played, make an appearance and then take slow time-jumps until you're caught up?)

I played years ago and had some relatively powerful creatures for creatures that hadn't eaten a Super Negg. So when I decided I was done.... I gave away all the stuff I had in game. Which means two relatively powerful and heavily armed neopets got put up for adoption..... and to do this....I had to click through something like 2 dozen variants of "are you sure?" that are also variants of "please don't leave me!"
When I came back to animal crossing after a year, my girl Cherry actually said it was great to have me back, and gave me a flashy cardigan that actually looks amazing. No guilt tripping whatsoever, just genuinely happy to see me. She’s my favorite neighbor for a reason. Edit: also just realized she sent me a letter. “There’s a lot in this world you COULD care about. I played club penguin religiously as a child and I had a puffle that I'd had since I first joined in 2008. I had to leave the game for a while for school and when I came back the game told me she had run away due to me abandoning her. I started crying in real life I was so heartbroken, and I will never forget that horrifying feeling I got when I discovered that
NFT's could potentially solve this issue by allowing players to own their in-game items and animals. If you had an NFT of your club penguin puffle, you would be able to take it with you when you left the game and come back to it later. This would give players a sense of ownership and attachment to their in-game items and animals, and prevent them from being taken away or lost.

When I found my 3DS, it was still in the same year I left it: 2012. And when I popped my Nintendogs and cats in there, my pets came up to me as normal but were filthy like the video said. The shiba in the video was also my first dog so I’m sitting here, crying cause I feel really guilty about leaving her again.
Imagine how different Ellen’s life could have been if she were given a real pet instead of a virtual pet during those crucial formative years. She could be running OutsidePetsbox right now.
One of my old faves did the opposite of guilting to play and that was Dungeon Keeper 2. It had a narrator's voice but instead of guilt-tripping you, it nudged you as you played into the wee hours that perhaps your time really might be better spent sleeping... "It is the witching hour, curses half price" (midnight)", "Are you still there? The imps are about to lock up" (~2 am?), "Yawn" (~2"30 am?). And my favorite: "Keeper, you know that downy soft object in the next room? It has the power to restore energy and vitality" (~3 am) followed by "Keeper, your perseverance has earned you a sage bit of gaming advice... GO TO BED!" (~3:30 am?). You could keep playing if you wanted to, there were no more reminders after that. The first time I heard those, they were like easter eggs, confusing and amusing. Eventually, I had to laugh, and agree it was time for bed.
I remember as a kid I literally cried when I logged into Neopets for the first time in awhile and saw the "dying" status. Can't get into those old accounts now. No idea what I set my birthday as since those were the days I had to lie about my age.
at least these aren’t like OviPets where your animals LITERALLY die if you don’t log on. it had a “vacation mode” you could use if you wanted to take a break but i had forgotten to select vacation mode whilst on a break and came back to find i had no pets :((
this is the first time seeing someone mention ovipets. i used to play that game A LOT but when i took a break i found out i forgot to turn on vacation mode 🙂
even if you do turn on vacation mode, it only keeps your pets fed for a year. i took a 2 year break on vacation mode and came back to find all of my pets dead and many of them gone :( i was able to revive a fraction of what i used to have but it was very annoying gathering the credits to do so through egg turning 🤦🏻♀️
The Nintendogs one broke my heart cause when I was young, I ended up losing the game and couldnt find it anywhere. I was afraid something like this would happen. Lulu Im sorry girl.
Just think of how horrible an existence that must be, being trapped forever. Buying a used copy of Nintendogs would kinda be like adopting a new pet who spent eternity gathering fleas and not having an owner, not quite sure what to make of the new owner. But give it enough love and they'll accept the new owner. Just keep taking care of it, though.
The guilt tripping in ACNH is really mildly off-putting......when your cute little friends passive aggressively giving you crap for not playing for a week or 2 is really strangely hurtful
Oh guild trip in NH isn't that bad, unlike in older games in Animal Crossing series. Dust off your Gamecube, DS or 3DS and try to come back to your old saves. Prepare for guild trip hell.

In the first "Tinker Bell" game on the DS, the npcs lose points from their friendship meter if you don't talk to them daily. This leads them to being sad that you haven't talked to them when you log back on. I used to hate that as a kid- but you can sidestep it sometimes by giving the characters gifts before you speak to them because it raises their meter.

its less extreme but when you quit zuma's revenge it asks if you're sure, saying 'this will make the mighty zuma angry', and as a child who did everything they could to not make anyone mad... well i found it very hard to quit
I've only (fully) played Explorers of Sky and don't remember this happening in that game, THANK YOU FOR PREPARING ME for if I ever try deleting a save- mystery dungeon games are actually so emotional in general but this makes it so much worse
Weird - the last time I tried that "I'm always watching you, but you keep ignoring me" line on a friend, it totally failed to guilt-trip them. At least, I think it did - it's hard to tell. They've moved house since then. And changed their Facebook name.

to be fair though, with neopets you did have the option of putting your neopets into a hotel where they would be kept fed for days or weeks. which was... ironically... one of the cheapest ways to keep them fed compared to the cost of actual food items.
The actual Pet stuff was hilariously unbalanced, I actually kept coming not for the pets but for all the games and activities you could do. RuneScape wouldn't work for me and wouldn't have appealed anyway.
Killing Floor has several of these, like "You can run but you'll only die tired." Killing Floor 2 goes above and beyond with stuff like "Go on and run for your pathetic life. You wouldn't last five minutes anyway." or "Each second another horde is spawned to eat your friends. Are you really going to abandon them?"
I was just about to comment about Killing Floor 2, the game always makes me feel guilty for abandoning my comrades to the zeds whenever I exit the game.
"Baldur's Gate" shamed you, but not in the menu. However, if you tried to Alt-F4 out of the game, you were met by "Are you sure you want to quit? Boo will miss you." Which, of course, led me to play through a 50+ hour game in one sitting. Because I am not about to make a Miniature Giant Space Hamster cry.
Fun fact: sometimes if you play Honkai Impact 3rd for too long, and a character like Kallen, Yae, Himeko, and sometimes seele are on bridge duty, will show concern occasionally for your health because you’re overworking and need to sleep-
In New Horizons, if you're gone for more than a month, the villagers guilt trip you into playing nonstop until you take another break and repeat the cycle
I remember the cutscene at the end of Banjo-Kazooie, how Gruntilda would make herself all pretty but turn your sister Tootie ugly, then having "Game Over" pop up on the screen. Man, it got me sad for Tootie as a kid.
If you shut your DS while playing the original Drawn To Life you hear the Rapos go Awww in a really sad and disappointed way. Add to this how overjoyed they sound when you open it back up and I still feel bad about leaving them, even if only for a moment.
I"m glad this tradition has basically died out. It's desperate and stupid, -and not even effective.- At least different quit messages are kind of novel at first. If it's something actually funny about it, then it's fine.
They should be doing that with games! Make it inspiring and encouraging! Or be like "You quitting? Hope you have a nice day!" Or "Catch you later ok?". I would literally continue playing if games were like that.
When my friend gave me his DS to have as my own, it had Nintendogs. He had a few dogs already, and my favorite was a husky. Found out the hard way what "donate dog to hotel" meant...
Did exactly this. "Dad, what does 'denote' mean?" "Oh, that's so you can confirm you can keep them." No clue what he must have thought I said. Guess if I'm going to denote one of these, I thought, I might as well choose my first dog...
One additional stab from Neopets is how the devs handled lost password tickets. They would email users back with harassing messages about how they should never have a real pet because they aren't responsible enough to have a virtual one. Also, according to Mark Kern, the reason he left Blizzard was because of how much the company changed after WoW came out. They went from a fan and worker friendly company to a "real company." Someone who was slightly higher up than him told him and all the other leaders that they had to make serious team cuts about 6 weeks before the game came out and when Mark said he promised his workers that they wouldn't just use them and toss them the guy said "We are a real company now." Mark put in his resignation shortly after the game launched... he was also the reason why fishing was added to WoW, for those who like the fishing minigame.
I never heard of that from Neo staff? But I only had to deal with glitches and frozen accounts, so... But a ticket staff member did send me insulting messages when I was frozen and lost two accounts, claiming that I "put in offending symbols on purpose", basically calling me a liar and was just plain rude. I didn't know this until an NF messaged me saying that a third account was at risk due to those same symbols, and I still think of that to this day. The symbols were two lightning shaped zigzags and were apparently a N*zi symbol, which I didn't know at the time. Obviously I didn't get my two lost accounts back because that, as accidental as it was, was an unforgivable offense. Which I understand, but Tony P didn't have to accuse me of doing it on purpose. Like, sorry I wasn't educated on all their signs?? Alice W was so much nicer about it (I asked for her after Tony's nonsense), and I was able to make replacements for those two accounts. She definitely helped me, even though I couldn't get those back.
This reminded me of the dark souls games on how they tell you you did not exit the game properly last time you played, they warn that is important to exit the game before closing it because progress could be lost but i know is just their shady way of reminding you that you rage quit last time you played.
In Animal Crossing Wild World weed started to grow and cover everything in town, if you didn't play for a long time and a ragequit out of annoyance introduced you to Resetti

The neopets one devastated me as a child. Especially since I totally forgot my login info. So even after I restarted I could never forget my originals were somewhere. Dying of hunger and loneliness.

Personally, one of the most guilt tripping game I’ve played is Drawn To Life on DS. Whenever you closed your DS, the characters would give a sad whimper, like they’re crying because you’re leaving. It would always make me feel so awful

I once played this game when I was younger, where you would have a cute pet unicorn. But I never played that much games back then, so when I opened the game 2 days later, I was greated by an actual tombstone for my pet unicorn, because they had actually died. I cried so hard because of that
This just makes me think of erasing data in the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games. Ever since Explorers of Sky, every time you try to start a new data, it shows a picture of your character crying. And since your character is almost always an adorable pokemon, it's not easy to look at

Any time I encounter that sort of guilt tripping, I tend to just not play the game again unless I really enjoy it. I find that sort of tactic more annoying than guilt inducing.

Most of the time, it's for comedic effect, but Nintendogs is pretty depressing. Honestly, one of the few times that I was not fine with being mocked for quitting was in Isle of the Dead. Its quitting message was similar to Wolfenstein, but what wasn't the same was when going through with it makes you see a suicide scene. And if you are freaked out by suicide, it can be very uncomfortable.
at best, its a bit tasteless, and at worst, its a manipulation tactic to get children and other susceptible people to give more attention to their product than they otherwise would via negative reinforcement. yeah, im not a big fan either

The biggest memory I have of Nintendogs was an upper classmate had a screaming fit, because the teacher wouldn’t let her take her dog for the walk during math class

it still exists in Chuzzle 2, if you choose to try quitting by backing out rather than just going to your apps manager and closing it manually. (its phone app but still very fzn and holds up a lot to the original game)
The "guilt trip" of dying pets stands in stark contrast to all the other things Neopets does to effectively drive you away from the site. Those bastards literally stole my money, then froze my account as thanks and then kept trying to steal money from me. I once was so into that game that I wanted to become a premium member. But as soon as that happened and the subscription fees were paid they immediately froze my account with the explanation that I had cheated on the flash games - I hadn't played flash games in at least a week at that time - and ignored every mail and ticket I sent to support. And even worse, they kept on withdrawing subscription fees for an account that didn't even exist anymore - the mails to that were answered, however they did so in a way as if they didn't believe me and as if everything was legit with those withdrawals. At least my bank could get my money back.
Oh my GOD in Banjo-Kazooie when you’d save and quit and the whole ending sequence where your sister gets transformed into a monster and Gruntilda becomes Posh Spice will haunt me forever! I was afraid to save my game because of it!!

Now that we're on this subject, how about saddest delete file icons? I remember Tekken Tag Tournament on PS2 had a save file icon of Xiayou smiling and jigging about. I was about to delete it, and then the icon was on its knees CRYING before confirming the delete. Made me feel like a monster. The same with Ridge Racer 5, on file delete confirmation it had Reiko Nagase crying. I'm glad they stopped doing that after they stopped making games on blu-ray discs.
Oh yeah! I was trying out my memory PS2 saves once and saw Xiaoyu crying for the delete. That's so sad :( but just as bad on Clock Tower 3. The main protagonist Alyssa will cower in fear if you try to delete your file D: and that's the sadness of files going bye bye on PS2.
The first example I could think of was Deltarune. When you die you are given the choice to try again or, well, not do that. If you choose "no" the game basically says that the world is shrouded in darkness now and it's all your fault. Great going, player.

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, the sci-fi successor to Civilization. When you click the "Exit Game" button you get a popup asking if you're sure, while a despairing voice says, "Don't go. The drones need you, they look up to you."
It's like modern games that still have stationary save points instead of letting you choose to save and quit whenever you want. I won't miss the days when that's finally a thing of the past. Games with just autosaves that save whether you want or not are on the opposite side of that annoying spectrum, though.
@@rhemedyextract I've watched a friend play them, since they're not for me. Horror games are a class for themselves. I don't like that many of the RE games limit your supply of "save items" but I understand why there are save rooms/spots.
Well one of my favorite games, Tomodachi life, guilt trips you if you leave your island for too long. When you come back, instead of friendly hellos from your islanders, you're given heart-breaking messages. Some of them aren't too bad, like when they ask if you've been on vacation, but I think the worst ones have to be "Am I dreaming...? Is it really you?! I thought you have forggotten about me..." and "It's been so long [Player]'s look-alike. Am I really that boring?"
I love nintendo games, but I hate how they make you feel bad for not playing Nintendogs, Animal Crossing, Tomodachi Life. I know characters from these games aren't real, but I feel bad for not paying attention to them. It's one of the things that makes me sad, because eventually I'm going to die.

There should be an option to keep your character existing in cost of money or whatever so your virtual friends won't die and feel alone for eternity, or to end games like "do you want to end this run and start a new one? You won't be able to access that file but your friends will still be happy with the virtual you :)". Seriously I love them I don't want them to suffer.
In the 4X game "Endless Legend" when you quit the game, it gives you the stats screen for you current game, along with something among the lines of "cowardice! you quit the game!" I found it hilarious like in Dawn of War
Elite Beat Agents “The Christmas Gift” mission says upon failure, “Fail ‘You’re the Inspiration’? Are you insane, or just evil? I’ve done many questionable acts in games, but let that poor little girl down? I draw the line there. Cut off my hands, and I’ll beat the level with my stumps. I. Will. Not. Fail. Her.” In order to get you to keep going. For context, the level is about helping a young girl come to terms with the death of her father. I don’t know about you, but I kept going. Ugly crying the whole way, I kept going. So yeah, even though it’s just one mission, that level from Elite Beat Agents should be on here.
Good I remember....and then I lost my sister’s entire Nintendo DS collection because she thought it’d be a smart idea to let 7 year old me be responsible for a bunch of easily loose able cartridges
You should also mention Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. If you quit the game after a while, you can hear a robotic voice saying: "Please don't go! The drones need you! They look up to you!", where the drones are the unsatisfied people in your cities who implore you to not abandon them.
And on the opposite spectrum there's Undertale. It really wants you to stop playing once you get the good ending, and really REALLY wants you to stop playing if you're intentionally on route to the bad ending.

The best thing about minecraft is that it’ll just let you save and quit. In the title screen it also sometimes show the text “have you done your homework?” Or “take time for your self”

some other games are the total opposite. there’s one section in “Bowser’s Inside Story” where you literally cannot play for a short time, the game forces you to take a break lol. and Warioware D.I.Y encourages you to take a break after a little while, that way you can be more creative in your projects

The worst guilt trip ever belongs to Tomogatchi. You leave it alone for 5 minutes and it'll literally die and play you a sound loudly to let you know it's dead.

The most horrifying guilt trip I can think of has got to be the older version of OneShot. If you quit the game, Niko died, and when you opened up the game again, you were treated to a dark, empty main screen with a shattered light bulb and Niko's discarded scarf and hat lying on the ground. I still get chills thinking about it.

Oneshot is an absolute masterpiece, but the original version of the game freaking terrifies me.

For those that do take long, long breaks from Neopets and haven't figured this trick out... You can book your pet into the Neolodge for one day. Just click to make sure it has the restaurant. The cheapest lodge will do. That's 5 np for the lodge and 5 np for the restaurant. For 10 np you can get your pet completely filled on food and max happiness. You're welcome.

There's this rubbish FPS game called "Isle of the Dead" for the PC. If you wanted to quit the game, the game prompts with a question of "taking the coward's way out?". Answering "yes" would play an animation of your character putting the shotgun against his chin and pulling the trigger, followed by the supposed main antagonist of the game (a mad scientist) laughing at your demise.

I was hoping they'd include one of the most gut-wrenching examples: Donkey Kong 64. Basically, once you hit Save and Quit, a cutscenes plays with depressing music as you watch K. Rool destroy DK Island with his huge death ray, a deep evil laugh echoing as the screen goes dark. The only way to lose the fight is by quitting.

I played years ago and had some relatively powerful creatures for creatures that hadn't eaten a Super Negg. So when I decided I was done.... I gave away all the stuff I had in game. Which means two relatively powerful and heavily armed neopets got put up for adoption..... and to do this....I had to click through something like 2 dozen variants of "are you sure?" that are also variants of "please don't leave me!"
When I came back to animal crossing after a year, my girl Cherry actually said it was great to have me back, and gave me a flashy cardigan that actually looks amazing. No guilt tripping whatsoever, just genuinely happy to see me. She’s my favorite neighbor for a reason.

I played club penguin religiously as a child and I had a puffle that I'd had since I first joined in 2008. I had to leave the game for a while for school and when I came back the game told me she had run away due to me abandoning her. I started crying in real life I was so heartbroken, and I will never forget that horrifying feeling I got when I discovered that
NFT's could potentially solve this issue by allowing players to own their in-game items and animals. If you had an NFT of your club penguin puffle, you would be able to take it with you when you left the game and come back to it later. This would give players a sense of ownership and attachment to their in-game items and animals, and prevent them from being taken away or lost.

I have a copy somewhere, and it was actually the first DS game I owned. I lost it somewhere, and I wanna find it.
When I found my 3DS, it was still in the same year I left it: 2012. And when I popped my Nintendogs and cats in there, my pets came up to me as normal but were filthy like the video said. The shiba in the video was also my first dog so I’m sitting here, crying cause I feel really guilty about leaving her again.

One of my old faves did the opposite of guilting to play and that was Dungeon Keeper 2. It had a narrator's voice but instead of guilt-tripping you, it nudged you as you played into the wee hours that perhaps your time really might be better spent sleeping... "It is the witching hour, curses half price" (midnight)", "Are you still there? The imps are about to lock up" (~2 am?), "Yawn" (~2"30 am?). And my favorite: "Keeper, you know that downy soft object in the next room? It has the power to restore energy and vitality" (~3 am) followed by "Keeper, your perseverance has earned you a sage bit of gaming advice... GO TO BED!" (~3:30 am?). You could keep playing if you wanted to, there were no more reminders after that. The first time I heard those, they were like easter eggs, confusing and amusing. Eventually, I had to laugh, and agree it was time for bed.
I remember as a kid I literally cried when I logged into Neopets for the first time in awhile and saw the "dying" status. Can't get into those old accounts now. No idea what I set my birthday as since those were the days I had to lie about my age.

even if you do turn on vacation mode, it only keeps your pets fed for a year. i took a 2 year break on vacation mode and came back to find all of my pets dead and many of them gone :(

Just think of how horrible an existence that must be, being trapped forever. Buying a used copy of Nintendogs would kinda be like adopting a new pet who spent eternity gathering fleas and not having an owner, not quite sure what to make of the new owner. But give it enough love and they'll accept the new owner. Just keep taking care of it, though.

In the first "Tinker Bell" game on the DS, the npcs lose points from their friendship meter if you don't talk to them daily. This leads them to being sad that you haven't talked to them when you log back on. I used to hate that as a kid- but you can sidestep it sometimes by giving the characters gifts before you speak to them because it raises their meter.

to be fair though, with neopets you did have the option of putting your neopets into a hotel where they would be kept fed for days or weeks. which was... ironically... one of the cheapest ways to keep them fed compared to the cost of actual food items.
The actual Pet stuff was hilariously unbalanced, I actually kept coming not for the pets but for all the games and activities you could do. RuneScape wouldn't work for me and wouldn't have appealed anyway.

Killing Floor has several of these, like "You can run but you'll only die tired." Killing Floor 2 goes above and beyond with stuff like "Go on and run for your pathetic life. You wouldn't last five minutes anyway." or "Each second another horde is spawned to eat your friends. Are you really going to abandon them?"
I was just about to comment about Killing Floor 2, the game always makes me feel guilty for abandoning my comrades to the zeds whenever I exit the game.

If you shut your DS while playing the original Drawn To Life you hear the Rapos go Awww in a really sad and disappointed way. Add to this how overjoyed they sound when you open it back up and I still feel bad about leaving them, even if only for a moment.

I THINK Skullgirls did this, when you quit a match, it says "is this how the story ends? You can't give up now" or something along those lines
as a skullgirl player myself this is true
They should be doing that with games! Make it inspiring and encouraging! Or be like "You quitting? Hope you have a nice day!" Or "Catch you later ok?". I would literally continue playing if games were like that.

One additional stab from Neopets is how the devs handled lost password tickets. They would email users back with harassing messages about how they should never have a real pet because they aren't responsible enough to have a virtual one.
Also, according to Mark Kern, the reason he left Blizzard was because of how much the company changed after WoW came out. They went from a fan and worker friendly company to a "real company." Someone who was slightly higher up than him told him and all the other leaders that they had to make serious team cuts about 6 weeks before the game came out and when Mark said he promised his workers that they wouldn't just use them and toss them the guy said "We are a real company now." Mark put in his resignation shortly after the game launched... he was also the reason why fishing was added to WoW, for those who like the fishing minigame.

I never heard of that from Neo staff? But I only had to deal with glitches and frozen accounts, so...
But a ticket staff member did send me insulting messages when I was frozen and lost two accounts, claiming that I "put in offending symbols on purpose", basically calling me a liar and was just plain rude. I didn't know this until an NF messaged me saying that a third account was at risk due to those same symbols, and I still think of that to this day.
The symbols were two lightning shaped zigzags and were apparently a N*zi symbol, which I didn't know at the time. Obviously I didn't get my two lost accounts back because that, as accidental as it was, was an unforgivable offense.
Which I understand, but Tony P didn't have to accuse me of doing it on purpose. Like, sorry I wasn't educated on all their signs??
Alice W was so much nicer about it (I asked for her after Tony's nonsense), and I was able to make replacements for those two accounts. She definitely helped me, even though I couldn't get those back.
This reminded me of the dark souls games on how they tell you you did not exit the game properly last time you played, they warn that is important to exit the game before closing it because progress could be lost but i know is just their shady way of reminding you that you rage quit last time you played.
In Animal Crossing Wild World weed started to grow and cover everything in town, if you didn't play for a long time and a ragequit out of annoyance introduced you to Resetti
that game is still a pain for me, i'm glad the newer games are easier on the player

The neopets one devastated me as a child. Especially since I totally forgot my login info. So even after I restarted I could never forget my originals were somewhere. Dying of hunger and loneliness.

Personally, one of the most guilt tripping game I’ve played is Drawn To Life on DS. Whenever you closed your DS, the characters would give a sad whimper, like they’re crying because you’re leaving. It would always make me feel so awful

I once played this game when I was younger, where you would have a cute pet unicorn. But I never played that much games back then, so when I opened the game 2 days later, I was greated by an actual tombstone for my pet unicorn, because they had actually died. I cried so hard because of that

This just makes me think of erasing data in the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games. Ever since Explorers of Sky, every time you try to start a new data, it shows a picture of your character crying. And since your character is almost always an adorable pokemon, it's not easy to look at

Any time I encounter that sort of guilt tripping, I tend to just not play the game again unless I really enjoy it. I find that sort of tactic more annoying than guilt inducing.

I absolute HATE games that try to guilt trip you. It's just awful. I tend to immediately lose my respect for the devs If they try to manipulate me.
Most of the time, it's for comedic effect, but Nintendogs is pretty depressing. Honestly, one of the few times that I was not fine with being mocked for quitting was in Isle of the Dead. Its quitting message was similar to Wolfenstein, but what wasn't the same was when going through with it makes you see a suicide scene. And if you are freaked out by suicide, it can be very uncomfortable.
at best, its a bit tasteless, and at worst, its a manipulation tactic to get children and other susceptible people to give more attention to their product than they otherwise would via negative reinforcement. yeah, im not a big fan either

If you're legitimately experiencing inner turmoil from tongue-and-cheek dark humor, added by the developers as a friendly jab towards you, chances are you aren't emotionally developed enough to partake in video games.

The biggest memory I have of Nintendogs was an upper classmate had a screaming fit, because the teacher wouldn’t let her take her dog for the walk during math class
The game “Chuzzels”, if you tried to quit, a chuzzel would appear on the screen with sad puppy dog eyes on the verge of crying.
it be happy when you decided to go back but when you hovered over the leave it be even more sad :( I tended to leave the game open just so I didn’t make it sad
it still exists in Chuzzle 2, if you choose to try quitting by backing out rather than just going to your apps manager and closing it manually. (its phone app but still very fzn and holds up a lot to the original game)
The "guilt trip" of dying pets stands in stark contrast to all the other things Neopets does to effectively drive you away from the site. Those bastards literally stole my money, then froze my account as thanks and then kept trying to steal money from me. I once was so into that game that I wanted to become a premium member. But as soon as that happened and the subscription fees were paid they immediately froze my account with the explanation that I had cheated on the flash games - I hadn't played flash games in at least a week at that time - and ignored every mail and ticket I sent to support. And even worse, they kept on withdrawing subscription fees for an account that didn't even exist anymore - the mails to that were answered, however they did so in a way as if they didn't believe me and as if everything was legit with those withdrawals. At least my bank could get my money back.

Now that we're on this subject, how about saddest delete file icons? I remember Tekken Tag Tournament on PS2 had a save file icon of Xiayou smiling and jigging about. I was about to delete it, and then the icon was on its knees CRYING before confirming the delete. Made me feel like a monster. The same with Ridge Racer 5, on file delete confirmation it had Reiko Nagase crying. I'm glad they stopped doing that after they stopped making games on blu-ray discs.
Oh yeah! I was trying out my memory PS2 saves once and saw Xiaoyu crying for the delete. That's so sad :( but just as bad on Clock Tower 3. The main protagonist Alyssa will cower in fear if you try to delete your file D: and that's the sadness of files going bye bye on PS2.
The first example I could think of was Deltarune. When you die you are given the choice to try again or, well, not do that. If you choose "no" the game basically says that the world is shrouded in darkness now and it's all your fault. Great going, player.

I don't like this, it just gets me frustrated at the game and it's developers
I can see why.
It's like modern games that still have stationary save points instead of letting you choose to save and quit whenever you want. I won't miss the days when that's finally a thing of the past. Games with just autosaves that save whether you want or not are on the opposite side of that annoying spectrum, though.

I've watched a friend play them, since they're not for me. Horror games are a class for themselves. I don't like that many of the RE games limit your supply of "save items" but I understand why there are save rooms/spots.

Well one of my favorite games, Tomodachi life, guilt trips you if you leave your island for too long. When you come back, instead of friendly hellos from your islanders, you're given heart-breaking messages. Some of them aren't too bad, like when they ask if you've been on vacation, but I think the worst ones have to be "Am I dreaming...? Is it really you?! I thought you have forggotten about me..." and "It's been so long [Player]'s look-alike. Am I really that boring?"

Nintendogs, Animal Crossing, Tomodachi Life. I know characters from these games aren't real, but I feel bad for not paying attention to them. It's one of the things that makes me sad, because eventually I'm going to die.
The Max Payne series has a tradition to make Max says self deprecating quotes every time the players tried to leave the game.

There should be an option to keep your character existing in cost of money or whatever so your virtual friends won't die and feel alone for eternity, or to end games like "do you want to end this run and start a new one? You won't be able to access that file but your friends will still be happy with the virtual you :)".

In the 4X game "Endless Legend" when you quit the game, it gives you the stats screen for you current game, along with something among the lines of "cowardice! you quit the game!" I found it hilarious like in Dawn of War
Elite Beat Agents “The Christmas Gift” mission says upon failure, “Fail ‘You’re the Inspiration’? Are you insane, or just evil? I’ve done many questionable acts in games, but let that poor little girl down? I draw the line there. Cut off my hands, and I’ll beat the level with my stumps. I. Will. Not. Fail. Her.” In order to get you to keep going. For context, the level is about helping a young girl come to terms with the death of her father.
I don’t know about you, but I kept going. Ugly crying the whole way, I kept going. So yeah, even though it’s just one mission, that level from Elite Beat Agents should be on here.

And on the opposite spectrum there's Undertale. It really wants you to stop playing once you get the good ending, and really REALLY wants you to stop playing if you're intentionally on route to the bad ending.
