    Glad you got your parts...I too have replaced that relay. Luckily it was under warranty when it happened. Unfortunately my lead screw and quill jammed while attempting to bore out a vessel I intended to hollow. Got the quill but still waiting on a lead screw...going on 4 weeks now. Supposedly both were in stock when ordered. Not real happy with Laguna right now...perhaps I'll better understand your opening scene when I get mine. I could video it but no one would want to see me rolling on the ground...if they did they'd better call 911! 😎

      I called Laguna, told them what it was doing. Joe, at Laguna, said it was only two things that could cause the issue. We started with the small parts first, or the most common part that goes bad.
      So, Thankfully this relay was this issue. Otherwise I would have to wait for a new headstock.
      Thank you so much! I am super happy to be turning again. ☺

      To troubleshoot this if after pushing the start botton and the lathe doesn't start take the handle end of a tool and tap on the housing by the display that should cause the contacts to close and the lathe will run.

    Kim what was the original problem? You don't say in the update. My Lathe motor stops and shuts down and will restart, but with hesitancy. If Im turning and catch it in time, when it starts to slow down, it will pick up the speed. But if it stops I may have to hold down the start button.

    I was watching the problems you noted on the laguna lathe with the wobble. I purchased a laguna 12/16. Out of the box wobble on the rear spindle bearing. I let it run for 15 minutes at max speed and no load. The front bearing became so hot I shut the machine down. I’m an Engineer. It’s clear that Laguna has assembly issues. It wasn’t the only problem with the lathe. The left switch guard was missing. I looked everywhere except behind the lower pulley door. The guard popped out when I opened it. So, from the standpoint of quality… it’s sad when employees place themselves out of work because of lack of responsibility to their own future! Every problem with this lathe should have been resolved prior to leaving the factory. Thanks for posting all the great videos.

  • @jimtobias3860
    @jimtobias3860 3 роки тому +1

    Was the Laguna 1836 not turning on? That was the problem that I had and had to do the exact same relay replacement. I've since learned that it may be best to turn it on ( with the green button) when you start, but only use the speed dial to stop it to check on anything during turning. And then , of course, turn it off with the button switch at the end of the day. Some experienced users told me this saves wear and tear on that relay and keeps it from burning out.

    This must be the month for lathes getting messed up. I’ve seen many videos from other turners INCLUDING ME who have lathes that are down & waiting on parts. My parts will be to tomorrow Saturday, March 10, 2021. I’m hoping my parts will fix my issue. If not I’ll be buying a new lathe. 🤞🏼
    Congratulations on fixin your lathe. I’d go nuts until I found those screws.

    Did Laguna tell you why the relay failed ? My theory is (because of YT chatter about my Revo 12/16) is switching from forward to reverse before the spindle stops burns out the relay. (That is if that's the F-R relay.) Thanks for sharing🙏 Stay safe. -Mike😷

    • @KimTippin
      @KimTippin  3 роки тому +1

      No. If I remember the conversation correctly, it was a common problem for these relays. I think they said they bypass them now, or something. Again, I don't want to misinform anyone. But it was my relay. I do not switch directions when it is running. I always stop it completely before changing directions. So I know that's not why I had issues.

    Just an FYI you really should unplug the lathe when you’re not using it that relay stays energized as long as the power cord is plugged in that’s probably why it burned up on you I noticed this when I first got the machine if you pull the plug out and hang around for a minute you’ll hear a click after about 30 seconds I noticed that almost by accident and been unplugging mine ever since good luck with your repair she should hold up.

      @@KimTippin Yeah I don’t understand the way Laguna does things the wiring looks like it’s way more elaborate than it has to be The only thing I’ve had problems with so far is the Morse taper in the tail stock was screwed up and I’ve already replaced spindle bearings and since I had the bearings out I didn’t replace them with the Chinese bearings from Laguna I ordered quality double row bearings from the United Kingdom now it runs smooth as silk other than that I haven’t had any electrical issues knock wood. But with all the lightning we get here in Florida I’m surprised everything in my shop isn’t fried.
