Here is an insight for you: Bruce trained with Kareem. Bruce described how difficult it was to spar with Kareem because of his size...A challenge Bruce both relished AND dreaded.
Interesting that you dont hear much about Kareem and Bruce Lees relationship. Kareem is considered one if not the GOAT of basketball and you hear so much about his high school and UCLA days but hardly a peep about his training and friendship with Bruce.

There were several people on Hollywood that were trained by Bruce Lee and that he got along with James Gardner, Steve McQueen, and James Coburn were others like Kareem that trained under Bruce yet it just never gets brought up in interviews. Probably out of respect, where actors usually have some topics they don't want to talk about for on reason or another.
Each of the different styles represented not a mindset of Bruce Lee personally but more a mindset of material arts. The first level was a basic style focused on kicking. The second was more advanced and focused on in or close quarters fighting. The third worked with weapons and a higher level of hand to hand. The fourth was focused on joint and wrist locking with a few higher elements. The fifth was similar to Bruce himself in that it didn't focus on one sole area but incorporated elements of fighting that fit that person best.
yes, yes and yes.....however there are also many layer in this movie (that never got made) so it was not only martial arts mindset but also philosophy and also he wanted a sense of myth/poem ...like how he beat Kareem for example, a man that had the same non-style approach to martial art as him but that was much more genetically gifted than him, almost like he was his shadow/inner demon.... and so in the end, he beat him with light at the top of a pagoda, very symbolic.

Watching the full movie, knowing this was written and directed by Bruce lee, this felt like he was trying to go more into action comedy, with the little pauses of the fight where it shows Bruce lee and the other student making faces and these funny little gestures. Especially at 7:20 it felt straight out of a Jackie Chan flick. And with the other fight in this where Bruce lee fights with nunchucks against the other guy with the red head band, and the guy goes “how you like that-“ before Bruce lee just immediately hits him in the face, it felt like an early version of Jackie Chans comedy action movies. Really wish we could’ve seen more works of Bruce lee
Good observation and remarks. Honestly, I always felt that Bruce Lee was better in every aspects than Jackie Chan. (Unfortunately Bruce Lee couldn't show more.) Also Sammo Hung in my view is even funnier and better than Jackie Chan. I don't mind seeing a Jackie Chan movie. But when I have a choice to watch a Bruce Lee movie instead I'd choose that movie! Sammo Hung also was a very good choreographer! 😍

Sure, he went out as a flame, but...it's just....so bittersweet. Seeing this. It's as if it's Bruce dealing with life in general. And there's one version of this with such beautiful music to it...I recommend it. It's heart wrenchingly touching.

@2:16. Taky Kimura is not in this movie. Taky was one of Bruce Lee's best friends and his best man at his wedding. When Bruce left Seattle for California he asked Taky to continue to run his martial arts school (Jun Fan Gung Fu Institute of Seattle). Take continued to run the school all the way up until his death this year 2021. For decades Taky never advertised and ran the school as a private club meaning you had to be accepted into it. I was one of the last generation of private students to be accepted while it was still a private club and fees were only $10/month. Bruce asked Taky to be in this movie but Taky declined.
Scroll down through a few of the comments and I don't see anyone mention the fact that the reason Kareem can move so well is that he was a student of Bruce Lee back in the 60s!! Many Hollywood movie stars of the time were students of Bruce Lee including Steve McQueen and James Coburn to name a couple!!

. I've talked to Taky Kimura about his role in Game of Death. His scene was cut. He was supposed to be the mantis kungfu guy.
It wasn't cut, it was lost, the 1st Floor and 2nd Floor fights unfortunately were lost, presumably in a fire. I can't remember if Taky was cast as the 1st Floor or 2nd Floor Guardian, all I know is that the other was Hwang In Shik, the guy who played the Japanese Karate fighter in Way of The Dragon.

I first heard of Hapkido in the Billy Jack movies and especially when Boong Su Han was in the second one Han arranged the fights in the films and taught Laughlin and his Wife afterwards.
Wow, I've seen this movie many times over the years and have never seen Bruce Lee proceed up the tower with any companions! This must be some alternate directors cut?
The movie released only used a small amount of the footage Bruce shot before stopping to do ETD. The full fight scenes are out there. I forget which release of ETD has the full footage. The fight scenes make more sense with that additional footage.

How about Sonny Chiba in the original Street Fighter film his fights in Raging Fire he is the co-star and Shorinji Kempo He plays Sho Doshin in it many folks think it is one of the best martial arts movies made during that time due to not just the combat but the storyline as well.
Obviously there are some legit martial arts but it's steeped in "movie" fighting which we all know, produces effects that real fighting (by all rights) would not.

I will note on picking someone up like Kareem was simulated to do... I am 6'10" 310 lbs former college basketball/football player former soldier and I can pick up someone by the neck. You can't do it at arms length like that. I can't pick them up off the ground exactly, but you can grab the with arm bent about 90 degrees, I would actually pick them by the armpit as a joke. I am pretty sure picking someone up that would run a risk of killing them though. If you've ever grabbed someone by the neck, well I would say for average sized folks, imagine grabbing like a 10 or 12 year old kid in terms of size difference and that my hands are huge... It feels like a risky thing to do...

this scene and the other scenes is showing that you shouldnt be stuck in a style cuz at the end you then be stuck in the mud. Its about his philosophy to be an allround fighter meaning knowing what to do standing or grapplin. Formless, shapeless like water....

If you block someone's kick with your elbow you can really mess up their foot when inuse to train back in my teen years I accidentally hurt someone's foot really bad with my elbow it took months for their foot to heal.

Norris said on the Arsenio Hall Talk Show(here on youtube) that he felt miserable doing the fight scene with his friend Bruce Lee because the producers begged him to gain 16 pounds in order to make him bigger. Norris did them the favor but he couldn´t do any flying kicks because of his weight. After shooting the movie he dropped to his original weight because he had an important real fight ahead of him. At the time he was the World Middleweight Karate Champion.

Kareem trained frequently at Bruce's house. Bruce refined his movements until he was satisfied enough to include them in the fight scene.
It turned out pretty good.
I'm pretty sure this training with Bruce Lee also helped Kareem Abdul Jabbar at his basketball career. For me KAJ is the G.O.A.T. of basketball! 😍

Ji Han Jae represents the fact that Bruce Lee wanted to break up the fights with a more throw oriented opponent to increase the visual interest.
I actually got to meet Grandmaster Ji-Han Jae about 3 years ago at a Hapkido seminar in Sierra Vista, Az. The man is still amazing to watch and is a brilliant teacher of Hapkido!!
The Hapkido guy is one of the highest ranking hakido instructors in the world. He founded his own style and some people consider him the founder of hapkido.
I think I read some where that he was a 5 time Korean champion in Hopkido .
Ji Han Jae is actually a Hapkido grandmaster (7th dan at the time of filming) and allegedly one of it's early prominent contributors. He allegedly introduced his previous Taekwon-Do kicking expertise to original Hapkido when he joined the movement in the late fifties/early sixties.
He thus contributed to what Hapkido is today. Original Hapkido of Choi Yong Sul was Takeda aiki-jutsu (from the same Japanese household where Morihei Uyeshiba got his background to make Aikido... which incidentally in Japanese means exactly the same thing as Hapkido in Korean; the way of unifying spirit/power).
It seems that no one mentions the change of expression on Ji Han-jae's face as Bruce Lee walks on to the mat. The look of a serious and dangerous threat. This is my favorite fight scene from "The Game Of Death". Ji Han-jae knows what he is doing. So does Bruce Lee. Both men have years of experience in the martial arts. The Dan Inosanto scene is pretty good too.
I like how it zooms on his tensed grappling hand, that would be how the grappler version of clenching your fist when something dangerous approach

Hapikido expresses the breakfalls, rolls and throws of JKD!! which is not often express in all my jkd books ,but I did see it in one of Paul vunak book on the elements of jkd and it had monkey style , judo. It was 26 elements of jkd !! Where it describes the different styles that are incorporated IN JKD!! this is my take!!
I think this fight is tactical planning. Ji Han Jae's throws require him to keep a cool head and he started losing when he got emotional.
Some of the kicks in JKD come from Tae Kwon Do and Hapkido. I think the main thing from Hapkido (besides some joint locks and throws) was circular motion in hands, arms, waist/hips, legs, and footwork.
yes true & foot work from Fencing also Savate (French foot fighting) + was a HK Cha Cha champion & had bad feet & had to walk on his toes is why partly why he fights on toes & from TKD they kick of toes for extra height & Bruce learned some circular motion moves from Choy Lei Fut aka Choi Lei Fut (Loosely means small circular motions & Movies on YT) etc BL had 3,000+ fighting/fitness related books.
Yea, blocking a kick with the arms is just dumb. My brother's Taekwondo instructor, who is now (I believe) an 8th Dan Grandmaster, went to train in Korea after getting his black belt here in the states. He was immediately dropped back to white belt and went to the hospital just about every day -- being black at that time in an Asian country did _not_ help him and he got his ass kicked every day for like a year. He perservered and climbed back up the ranks, and ended up fighting in brutal tournaments where the protective gear was a cup and a bamboo chest protector. Anyway, among the many people he pulverized in the ring was a fighter who had broken a few jaws. After deciding he didn't want a broken jaw, he went out, threw a roundkick, crushed the guys blocking arm and broke _his_ jaw, and knocked him unconscious.

The Golden Belt and Dobok signify the highest level in Hapkido which Ji Han Jae is the founder of. Only Certain 10th Dan Masters that have trained under Dojunim ( Ji Han Jae ) have been awarded the Golden Belt. Its not something you can buy or should be able to buy at least.
I don't think Bruce was their master. I believe he was blackmailed into helping some dudes fight up this building to some treasure at the top. That's why his body language is antagonistic to his team.
That's true. Bruce's character's sister and her young son were kidnapped by a criminal gang and forced Bruce to fight his way through the pagoda to obtain the treasure for them with a bunch of other fighters hired by them as well. James Tien (in the blue shirt and light bottoms), a friend of Bruce's who also starred with him in The Big Boss and Fist of Fury, and is now retired from acting, was meant to be the more duplicitous and self-serving member of the group. The actor in the black gi - who's name currently evades me, and who unfortunatley did pass away not long after Bruce - was meant to be depicted as a good natured but simple minded character. The unfilmed fight sequences were going to depict the group containing more fighters, and who were meant to be defeated by either the outside group of martial artists or the first level guardian protecting the pagoda and Bruce's long time student, who just recently passed away, Taky Kimura, as the 2nd level guardian, using praying mantis style, from what I remember.

Ji Han Jae was at my MA school for visit and gave us a quick class. in 2005
I believe the first floor represented the rigidity of thought of martial arts, 2nd floor seemed more like a fight against tradition (Bruce Lee was untraditional in his thoughts and who he trained. That mentality was most likely because of his 1/4 English 1/8 Dutch-Jewish and 5/8 Chinese in a time when being mixed race was heavily looked down upon. I'm half Asian myself we tend to buck tradition). 3 floor I would agree is the striving of formless, instinctual, reflexive fighting.
i feel like kareems floor is a representation of pure physical potential, but undeveloped. his eyes are weak because he isn't "fully formed". it is a shame that we never got to see what he would have become as a fully realized student of Bruce Lee.
In Taekwon-Do, the white uniform gets black piping at the bottom part of the vest at black belt level. It harkens back to the traditional clothing of Korean nobility, signifying that the black belt has now achieved a higher level, no longer a beginner but a fullfledged adept.
At 4th degree black belt, the adept now enters the realm of experts and masters, and is now competent enough to be an instructor of worldwide caliber. To express this, sleeves and pants get a black line symbolizing the universality and unifying force of sportsmanship.
Officially, there is no other piping or decoration on a Taekwon-Do uniform, be it on the collar or anywhere else; although during the early '90's, colored shoulder patches were introduced to further distinguishes instructors, experts and masters, inspired by military ranking armpatches. But it never caught on much.
Taekwondo, the Olympic sport, has a black collar ending in a small patch of the WT logo. It represents the medal of a winner to instill the will to achieve success and express the definitive orientation of Olympic Taekwondo as a sport.
The gold-trimmed uniform of Ji Han Jae is purely cinematic. Hapkido has widely diverse types of uniforms depending on organizations and even schools. The black outfit of one of the Chinese guys is in fact itself worn by many Hapkido practitionners. Gold-trimmed ones however would look maybe too arrogant and pretentious for a true martial artist. In a movie or in sport, that's another matter.

i am not an Aikido practitioner nor an Hapkido one, but i am pretty sure those people flying are just them doing their Ukemi and not the actual realistic result of the wrist manipulation itself.
I am a Hapkido practitioner and if you do not jump or go with the motion of the lock you will have broken bones. Your body kind of tells itself to jump to avid more injury. With that said these are trained break falls.

I recall originally there were to be additional levels with a wing chun & praying mantis masters. But unfortunately Bruce got sidetracked with Enter the Dragon and then never had the chance to complete the sequence.

@@robertharris9674 with all due respect, this is not true. Taky never got to film any of his scenes, so no footage even existed back in 1972. You need to watch John Little's "Bruce Lee: A Warrior's Journey" again mate. Bruce even sent him a plane ticket, but Taky never left for Hong Kong, and they even did not even get to film any test footage... You are correct about Bruce wanted Taky to play the Praying Mantis master, but it was under Dan's floor (not on first floor, it was the floor over expert kicker Hwang Yan-chik).
One UA-camr did the math and found that unless your feet either gain about 2ft² each or are anchored into the floor, it doesn't matter how strong your shoulders and grip are. There's no neck lifting someone off the ground.

blocking kicks is kind of insane, but stuffing them before they develop could make some sense. they would have to be like, stepping inside to disrupt them, but you are so totally right, you can just replace your face with your forearm and not take any damage. I would PREFER to get kicked in the hand, or wrist or forearm rather than my skull, but if you do it in a movie it should come at a huge cost to your arms durability, or at least HURT LIKE A MFER. blocking is not a zero cost maneuver, its way less expensive to parry, deflect or even betttterrrrr dodge!

I was recently watching videos where they edited DragonBall episodes down to about a minute and when I got to the 23rd (I think) Tenkaichi Budokai, I saw Tien Shin-Han force blood to his muscles to harden where he anticipated getting hit by Yamcha. Is this a real technique? Does it work?
It’s a shame this movie was never completed as Bruce passed away before he was able to. If had completed it, it would of been a 100x better than the finished product. But it was the studio that decided to make some changes & used a double/stand in. This movie is what inspired Mortal Kombat & other Martial Arts games. As did Blood Sport
In the movie Dan was using Escrima-Filipipno Arts the next guy Hapkido and Kareem is using Jeet Kune Do that is the way Bruce had it set up.
bruce wrote this scene as a way to break up the fist to fist martial arts and freshening up things with joint locks and throws.
Okay the purpose of The Game Of Death was to teach people the different levels of Martial Arts.... From a beginning standpoint to EXTERT..... Kareem Abdul Jabber represents a Higher class of Martial Arts, which is unknown..... Martial Arts at it's core is expression.... And the best are those who can adapt to each fighter, and their techniques... Bruce Lee often speaks of 🌊 water when talking about how a Martial Artist should be.... Water is the softest substance in the world but yet it will change giving the situation.... If water is trapped in a vessel, it becomes the shape of that vessel. Water is so soft that it's impossible to physically hold it in your hands, but has the power to smash rocks and carve out canyons..... And that's what this movie tries to teach. A Martial Artist must learn to adapt to ANY given scenario.

Hapkido relies on brealing the opponents Stance before he can attack you, can profit from it. Jeet Kun Do is the promise to attack from every Position and do not rely on Stances. This means "Formless".
Hapkido is great, but it needs, as Boxing, a firm Stance, a Position to ferform from. Here, Jeet Kun Do is in Advantage because it does not suffer from the inability of taking "a Proper Stance" while also beeing able to attack even when the opponent "does his Attack". All it needs now is to be faster, and as you are not bound to certain Stances to first get into before Acting, you have advantage as you keep the Initiative.
Also, as you do not use Stances, your Attacks are way harder to read - and thus you also oppose disadvantage on the Opponent as Hapkido relies on adapting to the Enemys moves.
This also is the Reason why Jeet Kun Do devestates most Kung Fu-Styles.
