  • 1993 was one of the most transformative years in heavy metal history. Genres that ruled during the 1980s were rapidly being replaced by new styles and sounds from the far reaches of the underground. Hunter Ginn (Radical Research podcast and drummer extraordinaire for Canvas Solaris and Agalloch) joins the show to talk about some of the key releases from this watershed year.

Re-listening to this disembowelment now, it's amazing how many new bands have aped the sound but forgot about writing good songs. Great show, thanks

You should pull clips from these live streams and upload them as shorts
Highlighted moments, funny moments, bold takes, etc.
I think it would be great for the channel and its promotion..IMHO 🤙🤘

1993 was the year i found myself getting less interested in new death metal bands; the genre was just becoming so oversaturated.... i still liked what most of the leading bands were putting out and how they were evolving (Entombed, Death, Morbid Angel, etc), but i found myself getting into Helmet, Tad, Melvins and other "heavier" alternative bands that, to me, sounded fresh and exciting. i mostly like "The Sound of White Noise" and am in the small camp of people who like "I Hear Black" - i still spin those pretty often. great shout out to that Meathook Seed album, too (just don't bother with the second album)!

Unfortunately wasn't able to catch this live (as usual) but yet another killer stream!! Great picks from all of you, including quite a few I still need to listen to.
Hunter is always a great guest, super knowledgeable and entertaining. LOVE Radical Research as well, my favourite podcast hands down! I love the fact he not only brought up Obliveon's Nemesis but mentioned it first! Such an absolute ripper from start to finish and I'm glad to see it finally get some more coverage.
Marty, I definitely agree with Hunter on the ones he recommended to you. Really think you'd like them all, Obliveon being my first suggestion. The debut is great but Nemesis is on another level and such a unique album to this day! Their whole catalog was reissued on LP by Floga Records earlier this year, hopefully there are also CD versions coming soon! They also have a new album in the works, curious to see what it'll sound like...
Cheers and thanks for everything you guys do! 🤘🤘

Marty is right - Eroded Thoughts by Morgue is a very underrated album. There are moments it reminds me of Autopsy. Then there are times when it almost sounds like Coroner. Great record.

“Marty is right”… could you tell my wife that please? Haha. Seriously though… I was always impressed with Eroded Thoughts. It was a step above most of the Midwest bands, perhaps suffering due to the label they were on. Thanks for watching!

Indecent and Obscene is mostly underrated because of its production. It tends to repel people for some reason.

I think this is a great year for metal in the 90’s. A couple others deserved a mention as well. Hanging in the Balance by Metal Church, Privilege of Evil by Amorphis, Icon by Paradise Lost and Counterparts by Rush, which I presume nobody in the panel likes haha! Great fun episode guys, cheers!

The "Supuration-The Cube" that was shown is the holy records remix under the band name SUP-very good as well (original by Supuration in 93)

Thought Industry is a top three band for me. I never pay much attention to lyrics in metal except Brent Oberlin's. His phrasing and story telling are unmatched.

Another amazing stream! Have you considered creating a Discord for everyone to chat metal/music? I feel like hiding it behind a tiny paywall helps (weeds out random folks from joining to troll), paywall being Patreon or whatever UA-cam provides.

    Agree with Hunter...
Early 90' was more Liberal/Diverse but i Disagree with him on it being a new thing because its really wasn't...
Metal was born (its roots are) Diverse/Liberal (its Natural State)... The Possibility was/is always there
The Elitist thing didn't really become trendy until the Extreme Metal Movements (over 2 decades into Metal' existence) and even then Extreme Metal was still a Liberal Artform with a few outlier cell groups taking it in a Ethnocentric direction...
But this attitude was/is and always will be the Minority...
You buy a new Volvo & then when your driving you start noticing Volvo's everywhere and think everybody drives Volvo's
    (nothings changed but your perception)...
Choose better friends (surround yourself with cooler people)...
*Choosing to shield yourself from negative people who want to stifle you creatively (or any other way) isn't elitism it's emotional intelligence... "Self Love Isn't Selfish"
Theirs always going to be Elitists in every group/culture to some degree more or less but for the most part Metal ISN'T... Restrictive...
It' similar (parallels) with society when it's conservative times the majority are followers...

    • @vuzkoth

AC/DC fans chanting disco sucks and Metallica yelling poser at hair bands aren’t examples of elitism / art conservatism? I mean this with all respect and with no mean spiritedness but your comment is guilty of the exact same confirmation bias you’re criticizing.

    • @kingIgor
      @kingIgor 5 місяців тому

@@vuzkoth Think u need 2 read my comment again it seems there's some confusion... The Confirmation bias Rhetoric is projection with all due respect... Added this line "Choosing to shield yourself from negative people who want to stifle you creatively (or any other way) isn't elitism it's emotional intelligence..." guessing that's what your on about (The "Choose better friends" part) ?
