  • Three very different comics - a stark and subversive western, a near-silent near-romance, and a mockumentary-style satire of comics collectors and human behaviour - have one thing in common: my adoration. And I also find them...underrated? Misunderstood? Unjustly overlooked? Unfairly dismissed? Join me as I try and find out exactly what makes Bloody Chester, A Taste of Chlorine, and Wimbledon Green three favourite comics of mine.

according to Bastien Vives the graphic novel 'a taste of chlorine' is partly autobiographical. the characters are not named, time and place are not specified. he made the graphic novel in 3 months.
quotes from the review by Rachel Cooke in The Guardian:
"Low on dialogue, it's Vivès's remarkable illustrations that draw you on. They capture superbly well not only the movement of human beings through water, but also the peculiar hallucinatory feeling that being in a public swimming pool often induces: the echoes, the strange tricks of light, the wobbly distortions.", "It's like watching an extremely watery silent movie: evocative, dream-like, mysterious. Never before has the monotony of swimming lengths seemed so appealing."

I loved what you did on this video. You do need a video on Seth :D. I've always noticed that George Sprott page that you added to the intro you used to have on your videos. And I've always wanted to see and hear your thoughts about Seth in a video specifically about his comics. I you ever end up making a video like that, or about another of his comics in paticular, I strongly suggest both the documentary he made with Luc Chamberlain (Seth's Dominion) and the book Eric Hoffman and Dominick Grace edited with some interviews they had with him (Seth Conversations)

So glad you liked it! I never know if such attempts make sense or just come across as incoherent rambling!
I'm definitely considering a Seth video soon. I have Seth's Dominion but not the other one. Although if i start pulling in noncomics, the video will never get made! 😁

@@ftloc I know. You're quite right about that. I may have been a bit overexcited after seeing you talking about Wimbledon Green. I've just remembered something I didn't mention before. I don't know whether it was when he came to Argentina or during an interview I watched here on YT, but Seth onced said Chris Ware made him aware of something he himself hadn't noticed about Wimbledon Green. Ware told Seth how much he liked his idea of turning Wimbledon into a beggar, since that character's favorite comics were about the adventures of two beggars. Seth answered that, since he had written and rewritten the different "episodes" of the story at different times, and later changed the order of some of them in order to build a proper story, he had never realized about that Ware mentioned 😅. Anyway, thank you for all your hard work. I might not be around here as much as I want to, but I always check if you uploaded any new videos

I love the colors in "A taste of chlorine"... it makes me almost smell (and yes: taste) the chlorine in those places & encaptures the feeling of being in these places, like you said. I agree 100% that it's a perfect story, wonderfully executed... with just one flaw: it's just a too fast read (but that's obviously not meant as a valid point of critic :) )

Yes! A comic you can smell definitely applies to Taste, and you're absolutely spot on how the colour (and the way it bleaches the skin tone) achieves that synesthesia
As for the length, yes, always a non critical critique we have for things we enjoyed. But i like that aspect of 'gems' i suppose, they are beautiful in part due to their tiny size! 😁!

I added a £4.50 copy of Bloody Chester to my Ebay watch list, and 24 hours later they offered to knock 10% off the price, so its now on its way to me for £4.05!

Now if that is not a sign, I don't know what is! I'm thrilled you got to grab a copy because I am dying to discuss some minute details and specifics with someone! 😁

Although of late I haven't gotten the chance to be online much, you should definitely check out the "Friends of FtLoC" Discord server. A number of folks there have started a book club and discuss one comic amongst them over voice chat on specific days. Here's a link to join the server, if you're interested! discord.gg/jCJ5yRN
