Ravel "Bolero" PIANO SOLO (with drum) Paul Barton, piano

- ⬇READ MORE BELOW I prerecorded the drum solo then played the piano part along with it using headphones. I omitted repeats in the score below which I feel is more appropriate to a piano solo. *This video is made in the spirit of fun making and recording music at home.

In this recording I used the 4th harmonic pedal only invented by Denis de La Rochefordière.

Practice tips:
You may be familiar with the Black Eyed Peas song "Dum Diddly"
"Dum diddley dum dum diddley dum dum diddley dum dum diddley diddley".
To begin Bolero a good place to start is to repeat over and over:
Dum diddly
Dum diddly
Dum dum dum
Diddly dum
Diddly diddly diddly (and back to the beginning and repeat)
You can also tap on a table or a drum if you have one as you say the above.
Practice the right hand separately, then, before you play the left and right hand together as written, make a transition practice step by playing only the first note of each beat in the left hand along with the right hand. This saves tiring your left hand with repetition but still gets your hand used to finding the bass hand positions.
In this video I play a piano solo arrangement by Roger Branga which is in the public domain and can be downloaded (free) from IMSLP Music Library:

im sorry paul, but the drummer really just stole the whole show. what an amazing and skilled drummer!
:)
:P Alberto I think the opposite. XD.
Sarcasm?
I think that's the joke
Not really
It seems the left hand is connected to
another brain 🧠 is exactly for this reason I am learning piano since if someone adult succeeds to reach that level of hands independence then he will have enhanced his brain with new neurones & connections !!!!anti ageing treatment ! Fantastic journey & perspective !! !! Excellent 👌🏾 demo !! Thank you so much !!
Bolero is my favourite piece among the other classics and i thought the piano solo version would be "soulless" but I was so wrong! Great job, thank you!! I'm an amateur pianist and it seems difficult to play for me but I'll do my best and play to this arrangement one day :))))
soah sevotharthe have u got it?
I’m working on a 16 minute arrangement of Bolero that you can try, it increases in difficulty as you go on
Rara versión, pero el encanto de esta música, que me atrapó hace 60 años, suena tan deliciosa como entonces! Felicitaciones y saludos cordiales desde Argentina!🇦🇷
Very effective considering how it wasn't meant for piano. Your a fortunate man to be able to do that.Thanks.
Such a big fan lately Paul! Amazing how you express the high pitches in strengths and keep the clef guided and softened. Superb technique. Learning now for 1 year, would like to be that level too after a couple of more!
Utterly brilliant. I've heard it 100 times. An analogy I came to think of: most of the times when you love a book and you see the movie you are very disappointed. Not in this case! The orchestral original work is such a fantastic musical experience that you would think the piano solo would be a disappointment. But wrong in the case of Mr. Barton. Utterly brilliant.
There is a whole new life with solo piano subtly forcasting each change in harmony. Thank you, Paul.
What an amazing piano and drum of Ravel "Bolero!" I took piano lessons for 8 years in my youth and couldn't read a note. It was in my adult years as a college student in Creative Writing, when I took a course, Intro To Music, that I finally realized why. I am not mathematical in any sense, but artistic. Love music to its core because I dance, its rhythm is in my bones. Mathematical...this piano and drum. I watch and listen to the piano. The left hand plays the back up, the right hand plays the actual Bolero song as written by Ravel. My mind, my senses, cannot do this. I hear, listen, watch the hands and wow! Amazing! Love completely Paul Barton. Love Completely! Your spirit and fun in making the recording is what music is about.
Esse tambor aí dá uma boa semelhança da orquestra do Bolero de Ravel. Bravíssimo.
This sound is really good.. listening makes i feel better all kinds of minds, like anger, anguish
Thank you for showing us the way to enjoy Bolero on the piano! The piece has an innate simplicity balanced by the sophistication of the orchestral arrangement but you’ve managed to retain its interest with just piano and drum, such a feat! Bravo! 🎉
This is just outrageous fun! Thanks for lightening my morning!
That drum looks like a pumpkin pie
lol
pumpkin pie 😆
Exactly! Lol
The pianist: it took me 5 year to mastered this piece of art. I wonder how impress people will be?
Some random guy in the top of the comment section: "That drum looks like a pumpkin pie"

Ouvir Ravel - bolero e não se apaixonar é a coisa mais difícil do mundo.
Me apaixonei por música clássica graças a essa obra de arte que é essa música de melodia envolvente e cativante.
E a primeira vez que escutei foi em Digimon...

you always deliver 💙💙🎵
Congratulation!👏👏👏
So exciting Paul (and mystery drummer). Great sound as always. I really enjoyed it. Thanks.
Paul is the mystery drummer.
+ManticTac
Mystery solved... Hehe. I'll read the info next time.
:) I filmed the drum on top of the closed piano lid, flipped the video 180 degrees when I superimposed it on top of the piano recording. As I use Final Cut Pro X this kind of thing is easy to do.
The process actually seems very sophisticated
bravo
Questa musica fa venire i BRIVIDI!
Superbe
Fantastic!!!
Could a piano version without drums be uploaded too?
sure! - I've just edited a video which has the piano solo without drum, with drum and drum alone for play-along.
Bravo! Magnífico!👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
So interesting to watch how Ravel put jazz-style 'dirt' into the melody.
Can someone direct me to the sheet music for this arrangement? Love it. Thanks.
Magnifique!
Here from Legion!!!
Güzel....
Hi Paul, do you think you could learn some of Ravel's waltzes?
