  • The day finally arrived to get Pompom to the club for its test run following the rebuild, and a chance to test enterprise after the repair in the week and its new blast nozzle.

that pom-pom looks great. well done! that "rosebud"great was doing a good job and you must had some heavy hauling to produce that amount of char nearly up to the blast pipe if not over!
what was that little 040 with the port of London livery on its saddle tank?

It started life as a Polly ‘Trojan’ kit, with many extra modifications, some to add performance, and some cosmetic to make it closer resemble one of the PLA tank engines.

@@TomsWorkshop42 I thought I had seen a polly hiding in there. Drove a mates polly once and thought I had broken the reverser screw. turns up its was this kind of fine tune-able reverser lever.

Hi Tom, another good vlog I'm a member of PDMEs in Cornwall I was wondering do any of your members own any Silvercrest/ Kingscale locomotives, we have 5 at our club they seem to run ok. Rgds Alan

We’ve only got a a couple of members with them at the moment, although both of them have a couple… lol. The jubilee in this video is one of them.

I'm starting a 3 1/2" evening star. Is there any in your local area that you could get some shots of. I would love to see some photos of the back head and cab layout. thanks.

Hi, unfortunately I don’t know of one at the moment, we did have one someone in the club built, but he sold it a number of years ago, before I really got into taking photos and video. I will keep an eye out though.

What are the common reasons for the build up of ash in the smoke box?

You’ll always get some build up, but it’s effectively a strong draw on the fire.

I enjoyed that, apart from my being 78 & therefore, despite the Southern running third rail electric. I just cannot get my head round the concept of non-steam model railway engines. So I would prefer never to see them. My other problem is that to me, you run what you have either made or was made by your family or club, not some manufacturer. Though I will of course accept a private individual making locos for others to run. Just like Curly Laurence did all those years ago. When it comes to modern versions of Basset Locke who was more into making locos for rich folk or show men, or electric stuff for home use "0" gauge & toys. I do draw the line because they miss the point & concentrate on the big boys toys only in sizes that model engineers can make. Forgetting that Curly made one offs for people who had neither the time nor skill to make a loco but did enjoy owning something that was a one-off. Als did not mind if Curly turned the loco into a series on making it in Model Engineering, for the Tyros with their little lathes to make in the 2 1/2" G that he was making.
This being a bone of contention with me. Given the cost of making steam engines, why is it that the once most popular gauge is now virtually extinct? Why do all the clubs no longer have an oval track for it? At a time when it is clearly affordable, are these clubs not building the oval tracks for this class of locos? Sorry, but I can see the allure of the scenic steam engine with its radio control. But how can it replace the reality of a 2 1/2"G loco carrying its driver round a track using its own fire & steam.

I’m not sure why 2 1/2 went out of favour, Maidstone used to have an extra rail for it, but that was removed before the track was extended to its current length.
Of the locos seen in this video, one was bought as a manufactured model, and at least 2 were originally kits, one built up by the owner, the other bought as is.
We are considering building a small track for gauge 1 and 16mm, but one of the biggest challenges is keeping it vandal proof.

Maidstone MES, no it doesn’t, I am also a member at Romney, rarely get down there though, but they do have 2 1/2.
