late 70s and early 80s, with bands like moxy, starz, triumph, tygers of pan tang, iron maiden, diamond reo, dirty tricks, widowmaker, angel, kiss, def leppard, legs diamond and so on.
MTV launched in 1981....this is American Bandstand in 1983. MTV had already been on for two years. This song, Photograph was released in the U.S. in 1983.
I thinks he's laughing and smiling at the Phil's badass "solo" over (or under) the recorded solo. I'm not a fan of lyp sycning and pre-recorded live performances at all, but it's nice to see them having fun.
@@kitoyobeni1 I was shocked to find out Rick was 15 when he joined the band! I saw some artwork he did recently and its fabulous. What an amazing, talented man!💕
He got lost in the bottle and spent most days in the pub. On January 8, 1991, he passed away from alcohol poisoning and morphine. That year would end with the passing of Freddie Mercury on November 24, 1991, from AIDS. I was fortunate to see Def Leppard on their Pyromania tour in 83' and a few times after. Some people are only meant to make their mark in this world for a short time before they are called home. Steve is missed and will always be remembered when a Def Leppard song comes on the radio by those who knew the band back then!
@@BiffBifford It wasn't morphine. It was the breakdown of painkillers with codeine which is a derivative of morphine, mixed with the alcohol. And he did make his mark, we're all still loving him and his music still. And I envy you that you got to see him, they didn't come to Australia very often. You are so lucky.
Aurora LonLey Wolf Dominguez Yeah - 1st time that I heard this we were cruising at our local hot spot - I didn't get to see this American Bandstand appearance if I remember correctly. They totally rock and are so good together!! Mutt Lang made them do this album over and over during the recording of it to get it perfect!!!!
Hi stev al Thank you for share, and a I'm glad you like it,, the band is from England,,, Formed in 1977 in Sheffield as Part of New Wave British Heavy Metal,,, hugz& kisses
I had been hearing this song for weeks and was dying to know who these guys were.........the 12 year old me fell in love when she saw this in 1983...... still in love with Def Leppard too!
Three years ago I was excited about dressing up as Joe Elliot from his Def Leppard video days. I told my husband. He laughed in my face and said maybe how he looks now. Crimes and indignation!
This is the song that started it all. When I first saw the video on MTV, fell in luv with them, especially Joe Elliott. And here it is, 36 yrs later and still in luv with Joe. Had the pleasure of meeting them in Ottawa on July 19th. And got my hug from Joe! Great bunch of guys
I’m 59 years old, and when I saw Joe Elliott performing this, I fell in love his face and his voice, and then I started listening to the guitarists, and then I was hooked. They all blend so well together
No one would even have even considered for a mili second that in 7 years the lyrical and musical genius of this band would so sadly pass away. Steve had it all. Here he is playing his XR1. A very rare LP Gibson. #TheRiffmaster
I mean Technically they are except for Joe and the guys on the chorus..... Rick to act like hes playing is obviously playing, Phil, Steve, and Sav are technically playing there just not hooked up to an amp..... vocals are really (in a way) the only thing that isn't live
Honestly, knew about Def Leppard when megahits album Hysteria was released; since then I went back to previous records. One of the unmistakable and branded sounds of the 80's.
I saw them on this tour at the Los Angeles Forum. When they sang this song, Joe Elliot stated the song had thrown Michael Jackson off the number spot, and they busted into Photograph. The crowd was so loud you could barely hear the vocals, but who cared anyway because everyone knew the words. My ears rang for a couple of weeks after that, and when I watch this today, I smile because I WAS THERE! I went on to see them 3-plus times after that throughout the 80s, 90s, and 2000s.
Early years of the band..i was 11yrs old during this time and i had an early crush on Phil Collen!!! Hi Phil Collen - you are still in my heart- Iloveyou!!!
I almost thought this was the actual audio from this performance for a second and was about to say “this is their best live performance of this song” until I realized it’s actually the original studio recording just with a live version for the video. Almost got me lol. Anyway, I love this song
What kind of question is that? 36 years (!!!) after its release date and still this albums kicking ass. Take a look at the sales of this album and then you have your answer mate!
Like so many others, I agree ; it's impossible to NOT note the difference in Steve Clark, from here to '88. And, it's just so sad. I watched it with Dennis Wilson, & again, with Steve. ---------------WolfSky9, 71 y/o

To me this song is one of the best merges of genuine Rock and unabashed Pop. I'm not a big fan of Hysteria, I think they watered themselves down there and Mutt Lang's influence started to get overbearing. Here though they took all the major Rock ingredients and weaved them into this great major key pop song. That vocal part at the end where Joe Elliot increases the pitch and sustains the sound over the lead guitar is awesome.
Great debut album. Love that song. Everyone would Lip-Synch on American Bandstand in those days. Here we see the vocals start a whole second before signing begins: ua-cam.com/video/rxFnwFRrD8A/v-deo.html
How many of those polka dotted shirts did Phil go thru on that US leg of the Pyromania tour? He wore one in Baton Rouge that year. I would like to know the story of the polka dotted shirt. If it was still a thing for him like Slashes top hat it would be hilarious. Oh look it's the polka dotted guy! lol...
Saw them in 87 hysteria tour they did about all of pyromania and hysteria and high and dry albums 3 hrs long or more we sang every song loud as possible drinking what a night to be in Greensboro colisuem got 2 tickets by the nc hiway patrol that night coming home to my parents left of center careless and reckless spinning tires on my 82 toyota Corolla hatchback the trooper said go strait home I'd was a 1/2 mile from my driveway another trooper setting at a little store clock me 54 in a 45 zone could have DUI me nope ticket in my driveway .lost my licence for 90 days because of that .hell it was worth it.id do it again.
which month or date I know 1983, cause my April 13th 1983 was exactly like the other photograph video girls in cages Joe wearing Union Jack British flag and group dressed the same everything. it's called the billy squire ticket.
No shit it's not live captain obvious. Lip syncing was the *industry standard* back then and EVERYBODY did it, Why? it simplifies a complex problem and markets the band for MAX sales.
I still love seeing them in concert whenever they come around !
the 80's were the best time for rock music

Rick's smile after Phil's guitar solo was so cute. It's sad he lost his arm a year after this, butbhe is still an amazing drummer to this day.
