For sane adults, there are only two options: 1) Somehow there is the most inconceivable and complex conspiracy to stop the worst possible spokesperson for unpopular policies, (but not stop the many other people advancing those policies) or 2) He is a serial con-man and the law is slowly, but finally, catching up.

It's way deeper than just "unpopular policies." In December, after tRump lost the election, he ordered all U.S. troops recalled from around the world, including Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Africa, Somalia, and Germany. Putin's playbook. If it wasn't for General Milley rescinding the order, tRump, Putin, Kim Jong Un, and Assad would have gained world domination.
In addition, tRump has severe mental disorders. Mental disorders in themselves are not necessarily dangerous. It is the "degree" of the psychosis that matters. Some mental health professionals have publicly stated their view that tRump's behavior aligns with the criteria for narcissistic personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder, and paranoid personality disorder, according to the DSM-5. Here is the clinical diagnosis for tRump and his worshipers:
"Narcissistic Symbiosis and Shared Psychosis. Narcissistic symbiosis refers to the developmental wounds that make the leader-follower relationship magnetically attractive. The leader, hungry for adulation to compensate for an inner lack of self-worth, projects grandiose omnipotence-while the followers, rendered needy by societal stress or developmental injury, yearn for a parental figure. When such wounded individuals are given positions of power, they arouse similar pathology in the population that creates a “lock and key” relationship. Shared psychosis - which is also called “folie à millions” [“madness for millions”] when occurring at the national level or “induced delusions”-refers to the infectiousness of severe symptoms that goes beyond ordinary group psychology. When a highly symptomatic individual is placed in an influential position, the person’s symptoms can spread through the population through emotional bonds, heightening existing pathologies and inducing delusions, paranoia and propensity for violence-even in previously healthy individuals. The treatment is removal of exposure." From the book, "The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump," by Dr. Bandy Lee, and thirty-seven other psychiatrists and mental health professionals. Dr. Lee is the leader of the World Mental Health Coalition, a physician and forensic psychiatrist with PhDs from Harvard and Yale.

In Canada we had a Member of the Goverment that had to stand down from her job because she charged to Gov account a $16 OJ at event.
Here in NZ we had one leave because she was caught drink-driving, and another left because of shoplifting. Maybe Commonwealth countries see these things differently. 🙂

If I remember correctly, if you're convicted of a crime with a maximum sentence of two years, you can't stand for parliament. (Regardless of the actual sentence, it's the maximum that counts.)

Israel had a better government that was for the people when PMs Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid were the leaders of Israel. But many Israelis thought they were "soft on crime" (sounds familiar?) and that the indicted former PM Netanyahu would "get control" of it and "restore order". Just like here, many gullible voters listened to Netanyahu spew some of the same right-wing talking points as Dump does, and dropped their support of Lapid, who was then the PM. Lapid lost the election, and Israel has descended to new lows under Netanyahu, once again. He tried to completely render their judicial system nonenforceable and defunct.
