  • In this episode, we explore beautiful Stone Mountain State Park (located in Roaring Gap, NC only 1/2 hour from Elkin). Today we hiked from the lower parking lot up to Stone Mountain Falls and back again.
This hike is just over 4 miles and features blooming Mountain Laurel (or rhododendron, we aren't sure), babbling streams, wooden bridges, the historic Hutchinson homestead (from the 1800s), and amazing views from the base of Stone Mountain. From there we take the Mountains to Sea Trail (MST) and the Stone Mountain Loop trail to the base of Stone Mountain Falls, a 200' waterfall cascading over a long granite slab. We cooled off at the base of the falls, wading and observing the beautiful scenery.
In related episodes, we show fun things to do in the Elkin area, such as exploring the Grassy Creek Vineyard trail, camping at Byrd's Branch Campground, and visiting nearby vineyards and wineries.
