Irishmen in the Pope's Army: Myles Keogh and the Battalion of St Patrick | Treasure Ireland

Irishmen have long fought for pay in foreign armies, but did you know that in 1860 a large number of Irishmen signed up to fight in the Pope's army? They were motivated, it seems, not by financial gain but by their Catholic faith. An 18-year-old Myles Keogh was one of them. He would go on to have a glittering military career.

So very clearly explained. Before becoming a Patrician Brother, Wexford county man, Aloysius Howling, fought for the Pope in 1861. This pontifical connection played a major role in the Patricians being given permission by the Pope to wear their distinctive green sash.

The Irish seem to be very forthcoming. As you were talking I was thinking of the thousands of Irish religious who left home and country for far off places to spread the gospel.
