The original and best interpretation, and the one which is most reminiscent of Eponine's character in Victor Hugo's novel. Incidentally, Frances Ruffelle was chosen for the role of Eponine by Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil (who brought us the original French version of the musical) -- they wanted the character to sound like "a young Édith Piaf." If you've ever heard the original French concept recording of Les Mis, or other earlier performances in French, you'll notice that the French actresses deliver the role in a vocal style very similar to Ms. Ruffelle''s. Bravo!

The original performer for the Australian cast- Jodie Gillies- sounds very similar to Frances. You can see they chose Jodie because of the similarity. I can see how all of them fit the Edith Piaf mould. Thank you for your insight.

They shifted the entire song to fit her. And only her. She is the original Eponine. She’s who I grew up to listening to the original broadways cast at night, as a child, falling asleep, who I saw in New York on Broadway. Along with the original Broadway cast of the secret garden, and then when I was a little bit older, Phantom of the opera.

Her voice is filled with so much emotion. It really fits the character of Eponine. It is hauntingly beautiful. I think sometimes we get too carried away with judging the clarity in one's voice, when in my opinion, the best performers are the ones who can make me feel their story.

Frances was my first Eponine, and she remains my favorite. I still remember hearing her on the original Broadway cast album and being completely spellbound by her uniquely beautiful voice, and the emotion she's able to convey - just tears you up inside. Unrequited love, knowing you're screwed no matter what you do, and the world is falling to pieces around you - in my opinion, Frances sings this with all the perfect sweet childlike sadness of a naive girl in the beginning of the number, then accepts the inevitable outcome of her sorrowful situation as it progresses. In my mind, it's quite an emotional journey taken in one song, and I can remember the impact it had on me as a young teenager so many years later.

I think this is an amazing portrayal of Eponine, but not the romanticised version the musical generally presents. This is an Eponine with the same feeling behind how she was originally written - who displayed signs of mental illness, had suicidal thoughts, interacted with Marius in a frankly creepy way, and was the victim of abuse. This performance conveys the kind of empty and intimidating feeling I get from the Eponine of the book perfectly, and still holds power and emotion where it's needed.

Such tender wistfulness and sorrowful yearning in her voice and her entire interpretation.
This is the best version for me. Ironically, I listened to many other versions first before I finally got curious and looked for the original Eponine. And yes, Frances Ruffelle’s version is the one I’ve been looking for.
Lea Salonga has the loveliest voice and probably has the best vocal technique but her singing has this forceful, almost angry emotion in it, so at odds in what to me is a song that speaks of vulnerability, loneliness, isolation, heartache and the infinite sadness of unrequited love. Frances Ruffelle’s captures these emotions perfectly in her singing and acting. It’s not enough for singers to have the perfect vocals, they have to be able to tell a story and make the listeners feel something. While others' singing showcase bravura, Frances' singing has more than that. It has heart and soul.

It's not a line about prostitution. When Eponine says "I did not want your money, sir..." she is talking to Valjean, as she has just delivered the letter Marius asked her to send to Cosette. She is refusing the money Valjean offers for delivering the letter, because she did it for Marius.

I saw her at the Kennedy Center, before Les Miserables went to Broadway. That was a great cast - Colm Wilkinson, Judy Kuhn, Frances Ruffelle, among others. Miss Ruffelle was otherworldly. She imbued the role with the innocence, the grit, the longing, the love, the desperation, the loyalty, and ultimately when a little fall of rain fell on her, your heart broke too. What a performer. Yes, Lea was and is great, and so was Samantha Barks - but to see Frances Ruffelle play and sing Ephonine was to fall in love with someone forever.

This is how it should be, quiet and vulnerable at the start and then properly belting at the end. I'm not sure why lately they seem to favor the versions where they yell the song right from the start! The build up is what makes it so emotional and real.

"The city goes to bed, and I can live inside my head."
When my sister and I were teenagers, we used to listen to this song and feel such a comradeship with it. There was an ex-cult sadness that we related to, with a deep need to feel love and comfort, yet buried deep inside of lonesomeness. This version will always have a special place in my heart.

Frankie was and will always be the perfect Eponine! I love Lea's clear beautiful voice, and Sam's strong voice, but they do not sound like the novel Eponine. Frankie has the shrill, "sailor voice" (quote from novel) and had a gruff sound to her voice the others don't. The directors saw her as the perfect Eponine and for that reason she was chosen out of hundreds of girls. She is too gorgeous to be the novel Eponine though. :)

She's great & I love Samantha's most, BUT Frances is the most book accurate Eponine. I was surprised after reading the book to realise she was the only actress cast as Eponine with the slightly fading, throaty voice. She matches Eponine to a T, or is at least most accurate, that's just a fact.

@@electrictroy2010They chose her because they chose Les Mis actors from DIFFERENT productions. They already had Colm Wilkinson and Michael Ball for the original London cast. They have Judy Kuhn and Michael Maguire from broadway. They have Philip Quast from Australia. So they chose Lea for Asian representation plus to make Miss Saigon fans watch the concert. Plus in addition Frances Ruffelle was already in two audio recordings for Les Mis (original London cast recording and origibal broadway recording) so they have to choose someone else. Just because someone is chosen for the concert means the others not chosen are bad. By your logic you’re saying Nick Jonas is a better Marius than anyone else that have played him except Michael Ball. Lea is a great actress and singer and I admire her, but Frances not being chosen for the concert doesn’t mean she’s a bad Eponine. Besides, she played this role many times in London and Broadway and she won a tony for it. She performed it on some concerts too, just not recorded

And now I'm all alone again
Nowhere to go, no one to turn to
Without a home, without a friend
Without a face to say hello to
And now the night is near
    and now I can make-believe he's here
Sometimes I walk alone at night
    When everybody else is sleeping
I think of him and then I'm happy
    With the company I'm keeping
    The city goes to bed
And I can live inside my head
On my own, pretending he's beside me
All alone, I walk with him 'til morning
Without him, I feel his arms around me
And when I lose my way I close my eyes and he has found me
In the rain, the pavement shines like silver
All the lights are misty in the river
in the darkness, the trees are full of starlight
And all I see is him and me, forever and forever
And I know, it's only in my mind
That I'm talking to myself, and not to him
And although, I know that he is blind
Still I say there's a way for us
I love him, but when the night is over
He is gone, the river's just a river
Without him, the world around me changes
The trees are bare and everywhere the streets are full of strangers
I love him, but every day I'm learning
All my life, I've only been pretending
Without me, his world will go on turning
The world is full of happiness that I have never known
    I love him
    I love him
    I love him
    But only on my own

I don't know why but her style of singing makes me imagine she's a girl in a movie singing solo on stage in a bar, late at night and it's almost closing time and people are just doing their thing but there's this one guy who notices her and the sorrow of her song. I personally prefer Lea Salonga's version but Ruffelle's version conjures that kind of image to me. Also, her style of singing makes her sound older than she really is somehow.

    • @Ihdc1
      @Ihdc1 6 років тому +6

Karen Santos Ruffelle’s version is actually more appropriate for the character because that’s pretty much exactly what is happening to Eponine at that point in the story. She’s on her own, not surrounded by adoring fans. And it’s also appropriate for Eponine to sound older than she is because of her hard life. Lea makes me think more of Cosette than Eponine because of how crystalline her voice is.
